And btw: vermiculite (from the Latin to breed worms; from the manner in which it exfoliates: or expands under the application of heat) sadly is not asbestos. It is mica. It's no more dangerous than talc- ie. baby powder. But it does contain silicate particles and any fine silicate in any form (sand soil, etc) can cause silicosis. But minimal exposure brings minimal risks: and symptomologies develop on timescales of decades not minutes.

@droppinstep yes to some degree to help them grow. even if you dont eat them you want to prevent infection as much as possible before the fruiting stage. and gardening and mushrooms dont mix, one will over take the other. fungi is a organism and can grow under the soil and possibly wreck you garden, or insects in the garden will fuck up your shrooms.

I know. Not even a loophole really, as the spores do not contain the drug's Psillocybin or Psilocin, so making spores illegal wouldn't be fair on normal hobbyists and scientists. Only the growing mycelium and the shrooms themselves contain the drug. It's like cannabis seeds, they're legal to buy in the UK as they don't contain THC. I'd be worried if I lived in the US though, as cannabis seeds are unreasonably illegal there...I'd be worried they might ban spores at some point.
