@ShinAkiraX Just so you know also, the man wearing the purple coat at the table, who's leaning across the table like he's talking to someone, is Voltaire! He would be the third from the left sitting at the table.
@ShinAkiraX Just in case you care, the playwright/poet Voltaire is the one in the purple coat sitting on the left at the table leaned over like he's talking to someone. Pretty cool stuff! He lived at Frederick the Great's court for a short amount of time.
Beautiful musik by "one gifted man". Who performed this concerto?
I agree, Frederic should be mentioned among the great composers. He was a talented man, somehow forced into the role of sovereign, but with intellectual ambition.
He was the opposite of his father, but reigned just as well.
I have an old LP titled: "Im Goldglanz des Barock" playing Albinoni, Friedrich der Grosse, and Vivaldi, and played by Maurice Andre and Jean-Pierre Rampal. This piece is in there and I treasure this old LP and, even though I do not play any instrument myself, I too am of the opinion that good old Frederic belongs with these masters. How I wish we had a person of his integrity today!!
To him Kant was a '' saddlemakers son with intellectual aspirations from Konigsberg, who would make himself much more useful in his fathers footsteps, for the benefit of our cavallery.''
One should remember more the musical ambitions of Frederic, 2nd and not only his military and political career. As I consider that he was an autodidacte and never supported in his musical entrainment (his father disgusted him playing the flute) he created high skilled compositions. These belong to the concert halls as well as those from the Bach family or from Telemann e.t.c..
mmmmmmmmmmm, he had teachers, at least I as a flutist know that Joachim Quantz (the famous flutist) was his teacher, I don't know if he had more teachers.
Well that's right. As a kid I also was entrained to play the flute in the music courses at my school but I'm still an amateur. Its a difference whether you study music at an academy or just take some lessons at the Volkshochschule as hobby.
Who is playing this Its great. I am a great fan of old friedrich been playing him since i was young. I do have an old tape of 5 concerto but have been searching for this recording. Could you please give me a clue as what to look for.
I fully agree with you. Although this may not be Handel or Telemann, these concertos reach very high mucical standards compared with many other contemporary musicians. This music is in every way a pure delight!

What is the painting called and by who? If you don't know either please do tell me how did you find it? It is most pleasing with the music!

@ShinAkiraX
It's by Adolf Menzel.
I should find the painting with Google image search or on Wikipedia.
Thrax1982 1 year ago
@ShinAkiraX Menzel actually executed a whole series depicting the life of Frederick the Great.

Actually Voltaire.
To him Kant was a '' saddlemakers son with intellectual aspirations from Konigsberg, who would make himself much more useful in his fathers footsteps, for the benefit of our cavallery.''
He was wrong about that.

Just brillant! Frederic the Great also wrote a couple of symphonies. Not bad either!

He had other musical interests too, he wrote at least one opera libretto too. Someone else had to translate it into Italian though.

A man of many talents !
vonand1880 3 years ago
Indeed, the fact that he was also a composer is often barely mentioned - even in biographies.
The Wikipedia article has only a line or two about it too. In the same time some rather obscure composers have long lists of works included.
