Correction: It was written by Arthur Hamilton back in the 50's. It reached 22 on the pop charts back in 69. The song actually goes purple orange and blue.

Thing is, Candy Man, violet and indigo are low frequency words, and this song is all about teaching vocabulary to young learners of English as a foreign or second language. It's not about teaching the rainbow - the rainbow is just a vehicle.
