This instrumental first came to me in a choreography made for some fellow dancer in 1988..and since then I could not get it out of my mind. It is an instrumental to hear with your eyes closed.....it makes it a thousand times better.
The dual substance of Christ- the yearning, so human, so superhuman, of man to attain to God and identify himself with him- Has always been a deep and inscrutable mystery to me. This nostalgia for God, at once so mysterious and so real, has opened in me large wounds and also large flowing strings. My principal anguish and the source of all my joys and sorrows from my youth onward has been the incessant merciless battle between the spirit and the flesh. - N. Kazantzakis
i think this music really captures the atmosphere I imagine of a 1st century palestine/israel in the time of Christ. Moody, exciting, augury. -sort of transpersonal and apocalyptic
@giantjuggernaut ......greetings jughead from the apple isle....you wouldnt know good music if it ran over you in '59 commer removalist van......go back to your golden gaytime icecreams for breakfast and your midnight oil with lucille garrett.
@EconAtheist I relate. So much so that I feel a bit bad for responding. My latest wife and I had mad sex to this a while back. That remains a good memory.
I simply wanted the best recordings of the music from the film I bought the audio CD, when it was first released. (I felt this piece of music could have been more awesome if it lasted longer, imho)
But don't forget... as much as I love Peter Gabriel, and he DID do a fantastic job of orchestrating this tune. He didn't write it. It is an old Armenian folk tune called "Hovern Enkan" (A Cool Wind is Blowing)
What is astonishing about this masterpiece is that the music describes how a feeling begins: like an insinuating breeze which soon becomes a thought. An invasive thought that will become itself compulsive and will turn into a breathtaking emotion. An almost traumatising emotion, a mind-blowing anxiety which will take over the entire body and spirit, until it will reach paroxysm...
I listend to this album three times drving from sacramento to eureka through route 233 freak'n awsome! made the scenery that much more intens i highly recomend it
This album is just one of the top of my collection . when i need to calm down and put my mind on a diferent direction ,i listen to this amazing piece of art.
@daemona71 I think you might be right. Loreena McKennitt has also used it, I think. Might be some traditional ditty that they all borrow from heavily. Well, like a wise man said, imitation is the best form of flattery! :-)
One of my favourites themes from "Passion" and the original soundtrack of "Last Temptation of Christ". One song and one movie that take me to Morocco this summer. Lands of sand, mystey, traditition, exotism and lots of PASSONS.
I WERE 6 WHEN I HEAR THAT IRAQ HAVE WAR .. I WERE WATCH ON TV THAT SHIT NEWS I WERE SCARED AND AFRAID .. NOW ME 24 I GO AFGANISTAN FOR WAR .... SORYY KIDS .. ... DONT SCARE I WISH THESE ARE LAST WARS
Very, very good...but the lost truth, or the hidden one, is that Mr. Gabriel, a very good composer and musicant should have paid tribute to his colleague, Vatche Hovsepian, a genial duduk player, whos melody "hovern ynkan" /cool breeze/ is the main theme of this part of the soundtrack, and is several times repeated elsewhere in it. This would be fair. Behave the people the way you would like them to behave with you!!!...That would add lot of respect to Mr. Gabriel's person and art...

@wowbobwow37 It think the whole controversy surrounding the movie itself may have militated against that happening.

Scorcese still got a best director nomination, granted I think it might have been the films only nomination, I'd have to check.
