  • what note is he playing, is it16th??

  • "that was very difficult. lets go back to 208 and see if its any easier"....

Lol, nothings difficult for you John, you horrible liar.

  • I think they started slow-motion at 1:09

  • I like how he pretends to fuck up at 216 and then says "Wow...that was very difficult...*yawn*"

  • Bearing in mind my level, I am exhausted every time that I have to do this. It gets on my nerves when I stick, 'cause this prevents me from going on the next scale. But it works.Ah, tthese are the conscequences when you wanna be John Petrucci.

  • 4:17-4:19 lol

  • Very Good

  • What type of scale is that? Is it just all 12 chromatic notes?

  • @likemike06

    Yes.

  • @fretboardmusic he was making a joke

  • @likemike06 Its not all chromatic based because when he moves to another string he is actually going up a whole step. FX: E-string= A,Ab,B,Bb,C A-string=D,Eb,E,F

  • 4:17 ok let's just say I killed Myself cuz I seriously think it is still pretty easy.

  • The mess up was fake so he didn't go into world domination mode. He spared us. Thanks you john we love you!

  • has any one noticed that a lot of people are just finding out about dreamtheater by Iron Maiden

  • KILL YOURSELF!!

  • Best part 4:14

  • jesus christ is he on speed?

  • hey whats the downbeat? i hear the term alot in jazz i mean theres a magazine named after it haha but i never learned what it really means i kno its something fairly basic

  • @tanvo93

The strong first pulse or accent in the measure ...the first beat in the cycle.

  • @fretboardmusic thanks

  • i was only at 180 bpm !

  • it's very slowly

  • jesus christ

  • :( my brother went to 216 and "just killed himself".. now i dont have anyone to play guitar with

  • "go to 216 and kill yourself"

    awesome!

  • i have been playing for 2 years and can play 250 on the nome (i might be able to play more, but that's all my nome goes up to) is that good?

  • @Fluffypopcicle well it depends what kind of note values u are playing + how clean you are playing... and what kind of technique you are playing

and of course that's how much your metronome goes up to, if you understood rhythm correctly u would know why

  • @6EELZE6U6666

i use alternate picking going up minor scales, and it's pretty clean. lol i understand why my metronome only goes that high, im just curious to see just how fast i can go.

  • @Fluffypopcicle well what note values are you using?

  • @6EELZE6U6666

i don't fully grasp what note values are, but from what i lokked up they are like half note, quarter note, whole note, etc. im not sure the specific value, but it's pretty fast.

  • how many notes per beat are you playing? one note per beat = quarter notes two notes per beat = 8th notes and four notes per beat = 16th notes

If you really can play 16th at 250 you are hella fast, but I really doubt that. Remember also that it's not in the speed but the notes and rhythm.

  • @MistahhB

i can play both, but the 16th notes are a tad sloppy, so i still need to work on that. and yes i agree, you still need rythm and a sense of melody if you play that fast, or it's just going to sound like crap.

  • anyone knows what DVD this is from?

  • Kill m...hhh...oxygen...

  • He's fatter now but damn good!!

  • this white boy its pretty good man

  • he is actually jesus's cousin and gandhis brother so that cant be beat he used to beat up mr. t with chuck norris but dosent have as much marshal arts skills because he spent so much time showing his guitar what it can do

  • this is cool. suicide is advised though. haha!

  • so....after this video i'm gonna kill myself :D

  • I am only at 80 on the nome :( Petrucci is so awesome!

  • How am I supposed to feel anything if I kill myself?

  • @ thisispissnmeoff I like your name. I can relate, brother!

  • I felt like I was pushin' it at 5 billion

  • "i was at 200. let's say that was difficult...." LMFAO!!!

  • "if I was mortal"

  • "That was very difficult, let's go back down..."

  • 4:21

    Bull.

  • hahaha...i totally agree...by looking at his face you could say he was having fun when he said that...damn nice guy!!

  • 3:58 Go Kill yourself

  • Comment removed

  • why is it that, I can do fast licks better when i'm sitting down rather than standing up

  • A good question to ask yourself. Are you more relaxed,or holding the guitar in a better position? If you intend to perform while standing, you should practice while standing.

  • @fretboardmusic also make sure your strap is tight and your guitar is up higher on your body not fuckin green day steeze if ya know what i mean haha.. you should be able to let your guitar go with your hands while standing and your guitar stays perfectly where you want it... watch some videos of frank gambale and hit guitar sits, guy is a shred master. hope that helped a bit.

  • 3:54 - the most epic advice ever lmao

  • Comment removed

  • I was at 200, let's say that was diffcult." Holy shit. He found that easy. And he wants humans to play like that.

  • "lets start of slow" which is pretty fast for most people that buy this dvd

  • Very good lesson!

  • let´s say that was difficult Lol

  • Ahh. This exercise will help me get rid of my bad habit.

When alternate picking, I either always miss notes in between on mistake or up pick when I play down the neck (high to low), which I just figured out a few weeks ago. I thought I had been downpicking. I guess I was wrong.

  • I'm not really sure if the upstroking thing is a bad habit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I just want to make sure I don't develop any bad habits doing this.

  • OMFG ROFL, people didnt get the subliminal message at 4:00...

  • Micheal Jackson did ;)

  • You don't have to go to Berklee or MIT in LA to pick 16ths at 200 or more. For years I used to struggle to play even the most modest of picking runs until I sat down and became very disciplined. It took me several years on and off and just recently I devoted three solid months to picking with a metranome and can pick extremely fast. Just take a very disciplined approach and you will get there.

  • holy shit.

I will never be this good. Even If I do go to Berklee :(

  • not with that shitty atittude you won't

  • I'm working on it man:)

  • you may be even better than him

  • now comeon, lets be realistic here

you cant just break the laws of the natural world like that

  • yeah, but very few

  • O yah the guitarist of Slipknot is way better......NOT !!!!

    thumbs down

  • who said anything about gay ass slipknot

  • I'm just assuming he is brainwashed by this nu-metal / mainstream shit nowadays, I shouldn't even be comparing DT to Slipknot haha, DT FTW !

  • Sorry man, i love slipknot, maybe as much as you do,but you have to accept that he's much better than mick thomson and James Root....bout they are great too!

  • yea, DT is way more talented but Slipknot is pretty good too,

  • @luisstephan who cares who is better. quit comparing them, they have different styles.

  • i was at 130 bps. and petrucci can do 200 bps

  • I can't even do the 120

  • its bpm :P

  • What? The shitty attitude? I think you've got that pretty good as it is?

  • Kill yourself!

  • "I was at 200, lets say that was difficult.." lol John's the best.

  • to use a metronome, do u just play a note at the beat? cos i know theres more than one way of usin one

  • what i generally do is figure out the beat division of the lick im playing, and find the same subdivision on my metronome. For example, if im playing a 16th note lick, ill program the metronome to play 16th notes. I dont think all metronomes can do subdivisions, but many do.

  • it's not just at the beat, it's on beat. if the metronome goes at say quarter notes at 120bpm, you could do triplets, eight notes sixteenth notes etc...as long as you stay on beat with the 120 bpm

  • I would advise 1 beat for four 16ths to really feel the pulse (again starting off slow)

  • if you buy John Petrucci's Rock Discipline on DVD it comes accompanied with a tab book for all the examples in the DVD, I think its a relatively inexpensive item, I got mine for about £10

  • i thought that he can do 6 billion notes when drunk?

  • It's hard enough at 120 hahaha

  • after watching all the "psycho lessons" i can't take him seriously anymore

  • I love how when he was at 216 he did some super shredding thing and showed no emotion right after xD

  • "I'll go to 200 lets just say thats hard" lol

  • Hmm. Idk how fast I can play, but I know I'd like to get faster, what exacly is he playing here?

  • His kind of signiture chromatic style lick. He uses this kind of thing at the end of under a glass moon (solo), the ministry of souls (Main solo) and parts of as i am solo.

  • Ohh okay, do you know how one might learn that?

  • the only way i managed was to pick it up when he plays it slowest.

  • very difficult to him,

    impossible to me

  • nothing is impossible im gonna try it before die :D

  • jaja, me too

  • What is the meaning of accent the notes ?

  • The downbeats.

  • I still dont get it. Do you mean play the downpicking hard ?

  • Working with a metronome or drum machine you must decide how many notes per click you will play-1,2,3,4,5,6,7.If playing more than 1,it's typical to accent or play the first note of the group louder,as that is where the musical downbeat falls. This is regardless of the direction of your pickstroke, but it's considered easier to accent the down beats with down strokes of the pick.

  • Oh thanks alot. But does accenting improve your technique ?

  • Yes,but the purpose of doing it is musical rather than technical.

  • haha @ 2:10 he needed disortion to play it :)

  • by incriments of 8, does he mean he increases his speed by 8 bpm each time or plays the exersize 8 times before bumping up the tempo?

  • Increase the speed by 8 bpm.

  • "I was at 200....Let say that was difficult"

  • the lick he does at 4:45 absolutely kills me. it's so naff. i cringe so hard.

  • John Petrucci has spoken. He demands that you travel to 216 and kill yourself!lol

  • That made my day haha !

  • he could have played 216!

  • anyone tabbed this?

  • OMFG!!! I love Petrucci he is soooooooo good. I will be able to play as well as him one day. Like when I'm 70 or something.

  • "That was very difficult"

How fake does this sound, lol

  • Almost exactly what I've been doing! Cool :P

  • His fingers move with blinding speed..

  • That's it. I give up on guitar :P

  • Can someone please tell me which exercise this is? Is it from his "Rock Discipline" Book?

I know it's gonna kill me instantly, but I wanna try it =D

  • Sorry,but I don't know.

  • yes its form the rock discipline book page 26 example 9 to page 33

    :)

its not that hard i do it now at max to 186 its fast and cool but when u start ,start at 100 or else u will fail cause the pattern is simple but going at 200 needs practice :) so yeah ther it is

  • Just keeps going faster and faster haha

  • Played for 2 years and I still can't come close to even the first setting of that metronome. Not so cleanly or with a pick anyway.

    :/

  • at least you haven't settled with playing that fast, even though it doesnt sound good. And that is a good thing.

Too many piece of shit online-heroes out that bragging about how fast they play when it actually sounds like shit.

I sound like shit when I play lol, but at least I KNOW that and therefore not braggind :)

  • This isn't a bragging video. Read the description. It's how to work with a metronome to develop speed. It just so happens JP has amazing chops.

  • O_o

  • Ooooohhh!!! now I get it! Thank you for making me realize I can't play the guitar! Which instrument would you suggest for mortals?

  • thanks john, now ive learned how to play guitar

  • Go to 216 and kill yourself! hahahah

  • That part had me laughing my ass off. Lol

  • " i was on 200, lets say that was fast and back it of top 170 and get comfortable there"

  • I know that was priceless lol. John thinks fast is probably around 5 billion notes per second lol.

  • can anyone giv me the tab of what he is playin??

  • Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, and David Gilmour are my favourite Progressive guitar players.

  • LEGEND!

  • "Lets say that was dificult"

    ahahahahhahaha

    he is a god

  • ha yeah i laughed at that part for a while

  • KILL YOURSELF

  • 4:18 guitar tourettes

  • 'Let's say that was difficult..."

    lol, such modesty.

  • bahaha! subbed 5/5

  • What are the tempos he plays? Each time.

  • near 155 first time

  • 2:08

    Thats called World Domination Mode!!!

Ha, this guy is the coolest guy, and one of the best guitar players in the world.

  • to save time he shud try not talking

  • "i was at 200, lets say that was difficult, ill go back down to about 170" lol, what a legend. I wish i had enough spare time to dedicate my life to playing guitar :/ Gunna have a gap year after college and really go for it tho. I know noone on here cares but ah well, feels good to put it into writing. Anyway, back onto commenting, this man is a true inspiration.

  • anybody know what scale he's using?

it almost sounds like the chromatic.

  • Technically, anything you play anywhere on any instrument is in the chromatic scale :P but he's doing 3 notes per string and not moving around too much or doing any big stretches so I would assume it's some kind of minor or perhaps a mode.

  • no a chromatic is when you go up and down by half and whole steps.

  • Actually, the chromatic scale is all the 12 notes of our musical scale. So that makes any note part of the chromatic scale. That is what I learned from a theory book, I could be way off.

  • yeah thats what i mean. that you play all 12 notes in the octave, and those note are going up and down by half steps. so yes they are part of a chromatic scale, but for it to be a complete chromatic scale, it would have to go all the way up through all 12 notes. so we were both right just coming from different perspective.

  • it sounds like flight of the bumblebee..petrucci style

  • ha, I thought the same thing.

  • he has one called Bite of the Mosquito

  • At 2:07 he flipped on the Killzone Mode, watch closely :D

  • BWhahaahha

  • that sounded like fotb

  • whenever i try to improvise a solo i can play it but i dont do it anywhere near his level lol he is a 10 out of 10

  • lol that video helps us real a lot:)

    200......hehe

  • start off at 100?? Id prolly start off at 20. that isnt possible.

  • I would probably start that riff at 20 and work my way up to 75.

  • Awesome, this has some great tips :)

  • This is an awesome lesson. I learnt shit loads.

  • This is exactly the technique I'm using at the moment to sharpen up my altenate picking.
