@heklngjekl yes i've read somewhere that there is an entire set played by the gun club at the new wave theatre. if the rest is like this, well it could be one of the greatest performance of all time
Yes, and amazing to see him (Rob) playing again. I agree, he was so good, and criminally underrated, at least by history (he was adored by all who knew him - what a sweet gentle soul).
I love how the Gun Club are labeled a thousand times over. Punk-blues! Deathrock! Garage! Gothic! In reality, they don't sound like The White Stripes, or 45 Grave, or The Cramps, or Bauhaus. Jeffrey had his own sound, from the early "tribal" days to the more blues-laden last albums.
On the topic of goths and history, its just a damn shame Christian Death isn't a household name. Those boys should be equaled with Bauhaus by now. Rozz's era of course. Some of the smartest music ever . . .
Right on! I'm surprised by the number of people I've run into who love the Only Theatre of Pain record. I always thought no one remembered it. Kudos to you for giving CD and Rozz props.
You're from UK, yeah? Funny I was just telling someone how I never heard the word "goth" in the '80's. "Death Rockers," it was, in my circle of Bad America.
Interesting that, bll. Yeah, I'm from the UK and there were always goths, from as early as I was going to gigs, starting around '82. There was a whole club for them in London, the Batcave, and then there were usually goth support bands, total loser groups you just knew weren't going anywhere. It looked like a movement with no traction and little imagination and I never imagined goths would still be around even ten years later.
Right, well in any scene there always seems to be one good group for every hundred or two going through the motions. As for goth, to each his own. . . but why didn't the "burundi sound" last? Indians! Ants and pirates for The Kids!
In some parallel universe, that's what made it. Marilyn Manson is called Indign Ant, wears cloaks and swashbuckler boots and has two drummers. Goth is a forgotten footnote of pop history.
at an afterhours jam at small's k.o. in la one night, jeffrey walked in with keith m of circle jerks. he sang hank williams' ramblin man with us. just awesome.
That's correct: Dutch! I was in a moderately successful, relatively short-lived band named Paradogs (and after that more succesfully rocking out in the Ace-Tones, Link Wray Band, and more).
Very funny that you should mention that band God. Paradogs had a promo photo made of all four guys in the nude, and when we were looking at the contact sheets, God had done just the same thing - and they got published first. They didn't know about our photo, we didn't know about theirs!

This band created the greatest music I have ever had the fortunate of hearing in my 21 years on this planet, I hear the word "underrated" thrown around a lot in reference to them.... let me just say if there was 20ft high golden statues of Jeffrey Lee Pierce in every major city in the world, i'd be posting here arguing they should be 50ft and that they got his eye's wrong.... the man was one of few truely worthy of the overused tag of GENIUS.
This clip is so amazing.. Great to see jeffrey lee in his early years! Hhahaha how smaked out is he tho in this video? hahaha fucking awesome!

I love it that people quote JLP's lyrics on these threads. They so totally deserve to be quoted.

I was just thinking the same thing. It was called the new wave here in Europe. I recall the term gothic only appeared like in the 90's.

I played a support slot for them twice, at the Paradiso in Amsterdam (with patricia on bass) and I think in Utrecht.
Pretty intimidating, but not unfriendly people - especially Patricia, who wanted to know how old my Rickenbacker bass was!
