Framerate, depth of field and shutterspeed are all very important, and will help to achieve a more film like look. But by just shooting 24p on a handy-cam is not going to give you the same look as shooting 24p on a RED or CineAlta Camera. Quality and range of colour depth will give you the look, and now because of new DSLRs, people can get pretty close :)

hey videomakers friends, you can render your videos on h264 and uploaded with high quality on youtube, we cant see all the details,on your videos, is just an advise
@tomcruise19002 : If I may respond... PAL or NTSC has two differences: the resolution of the image (when speaking about standard definition that is) and the amount of interlaced frames per second, so PAL or NTSC will make no difference in "smoothness" in motion.
NTSC is a lot more prone to deviation in colors compared to PAL because of the fact that PAL uses precisely the half of the mains voltage's frequency for clock rates to base it's frames-per-second signal on.
@Casetopfloor Very nice! We're working on a series of video tutorials for making music videos right now, so you might find those useful when they premiere.
Can I pull down the frame rate in Vegas Pro 9? I only have a cheap Canon camcorder with no filters or frame rate adjustment capabilities. Working with what I've got, is there anything I can do to make the crummy DV footage look more filmic?

@mike7743 said: "I don't know anyone alive who grew up watching Ben Hur and The Wizard of Oz."
Right now there is a 6yr old growing up watching Wizard of Oz. I always laugh when people say they are too young to know about certain things. They don't get erased. They're still there. ;)
@VideoMenu that's called the "exception" not the rule. now ask yourself, how many 6yr old children are currently watching the Wizard of Oz? would they be a large number enough to be representatives of this generation's taste?
By the way, many filmmakers love film... period. It may not be *your* taste, but you always hear about successful artists who were raised on the old stuff, be it music, painting, film, books, etc.
@videomaker Film is still vastly superior to digital in overall image quality. Have you ever seen an IMAX movie? Arri's Alexa has come close to 35, but it certainly isn't there yet.
@SalilSundresh True that. IMAX is the best and they haven't shot a format that large on video. But that's not to poo-poo what video is doing in cinema. The Red Epic has the best quality image second only to the IMAX format.
Im in Aus so we normally shoot 25fps, yet I would like to shoot in 24fps so achieve the film look. I'm using a panasonic DVCPro HDcam, what settings would I change to shoot filmesque? That does 24p, HD footage ? I was looking at the sony hdr-fx7 but it doesn't do 24p. can anyone give me some good advice ... I want to try to make small films.!
@MrTestNTune the canon xh-a1 is near your $2500 price limit. I recently bought a canon xh-a1s and it was $3250 from B&H video but it came with an extra battery, 5 tapes, a wide angel lens and a case. the xh-a1 is a little cheaper than the xh-a1s and it is HD and shoots 24P.
I'm using the Sony HDR-CX 105e HD 1080i camcorder, and judging by the design, it doesn't really look 35mm lens compatible. is it? og the external lenses only compatible with videocameras with the same design as the SLR digital cameras? (poorly explained, hopefully you get the picture) I'm really interested in knowing if there exists a 35 mm lens for my camera, I'm really into film...

Can you still make 1080i look movie like?
That's very, very informative. Thank you very much. :)
One question though, if I may: You mentioned using video editing software to convert an interlaced video into progressive scan. I'm guessing the whole point of interlaced film is so that you can increase frame rate without increasing the cost too much. That said, do most video cameras film in an interlaced format? I would guess that that's the case, except for high-end video cameras. Still, confirmation would be nice. Thank you.
I have a Panasonic AG-DVC20 Camcorder and there is not a setting for 24p. However, there is and LP and SP setting, and I was wondering if the LP mode shoots in 24p because it takes up less film. Couldn't find the frame rate anywhere in the mannual
@kelvintan1108 I think it's like 29.97 fps is the same as saying 30 fps. Like instead of saying 24.92 fps some cameras/software just say 25 fps...Not sure though, just a theory :D
@Addman03 24fps(23.987) is film, 25fps is PAL which is Australian and Europe video/tv standard. In America it's 30fps. There's really not much visual difference between shooting 25 and 24
Maybe you could use a video editing suite that has an adjustable frame rate. As far as I'm concerned, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premiere Elements, and even iMovie all used a fixed frame rate of 30p. If you can change the frame rate in Premiere Pro to 24p, that would probably give a more accurate film look.

Hi, I recently bought a sanyo full HD camera. However, the videos I take with it aren't very clear, and seem to have lines going through them. Is there anything I can do, perhaps a filter I can apply post production?
