Actually, the nike smoke was used for testing wind at high altitude before they launched a serious rocket. the cone created a low pressure right behind it, that pressure pulled chemicals out of the rocket that left a DARK "smoke" trail in the sky so they could watch what the wind was doing.

The cone of the rocket is deliberately wider than its fuselage to form the supersonic shockwave at the front and not at the fins....right ?
