Im thinkin that because it was a Brown Hyena ( which isn't a real competitor to Lions ) and not a Spotted Hyena ( which competes against Lions for food and territory daily ) is the only reason that Hyena is still alive

Im not sure but it's plausible. Everytime I've seen a male Lion get ahold of a spotted Hyena it usually never servives
