pitch I am one of the biggest heaviest players there (6'3" / 191cm and 252lbs / 115kg) but when I play American Football there are lots of guys much bigger than myself. Not just linemen (the typically heavier guys) but big fullbacks can be up to 280lbs / 125kg and they can really shift. People go on about Jonah Lomu but there are plenty of guys who play American Football who are very similar athletes (look up Brandon Jacobs on wikipedia) Rugby has yet to find another Lomu....
I speak from the fortunate perspective of having played both to a decent level. I play Gridirion Football in the UK at a University level, and I have also play Rugby Football, again at University level.
Both are great sports, both are hard, but for different reasons. Rugby is more demanding overall, because of the fitness element, but the hardest hits/tackles/blocks are un-deniably in American Football, not least because the players are that much bigger and stronger. When I step onto the rugby
You have the whole article about history of football on wikipedia. If you read it, you will find out why American football is also a football and that there is no such thing as "proper" football you're talking about.

You seriously think pads do any thing? I bet you never even picked up a fucking american football before you just went for you fat ass looking rugby piece of shit.
I grew up in the states and learned to call American Football "football" and real football "soccer". I can see how its confusing for non americans. And its really sad that we've idolized a weird sport and given it such an unfitting name. Even now I think the game is odd as I'm much more of a soccer, uh I mean football, fan. Sometimes I think I should have been born elsewhere.
Oh, thanks for explaining yourself on that witty comment. I'm sure it does take some thinking to elaborate on your opinion as well as some miniature nuts to pull off calling me a loser via internet. Keep it real, G-Dog.
American football reminds me of a mating ritual. You have big men running into eachother for no appearant reason, while young attractive women cheer from the sidelines.
this is Canadian football which has 12 men instead of eleven and 3 downs (chances to score) instead of 4 downs like the americans. other than that i agree with your response lol.
American football confuses me and I'm from the U.S. I don't get the terminology and rules. I like reading people's responses to the game here. CarefulSquid's bread thief analogy is funny. I think a lot of soccer fans would like to join the rest of the world in calling that sport football in the states, but... American football is way too popular and makes way too much money. Ha.
when american football was invented they would kick the ball more often they they do now. the rules have changed a lot in the last 100 years.
besides, if we're being literal, shouldn't "proper" football be called footkickball. so then basketball should then be changed to netball, since there's no actual net?
they change players often to confuse the opposing team. if they continued to use the same players, the other team would quickly adjust their own players accordingly. switching up keeps them guessing.
also, some of those linemen (the guys that get down on their hands) are close, if not over, 300-pounds.
also of note: canadian football is different than american football. for the most part it's the same, but in canada the rules are slightly different and the field is larger.
Oh, that's interesting. So do Canadian teams play American teams? If so, which rules do they follow?
I noticed quite a few of the players had a lot of fat - is that on purpose, like sumo? Because they don't need to run, but the body weight is good for tackling?
i'm pretty sure canadians do not play americans. but i could be wrong. maybe some of the teams near the border do. dunno.
haha! ok, so the fat guys aren't fat because they're fat. naturally. and they've been selected to be linemen because they're so big. the tall skinny guys are usually the receivers. and the fast and short guys are usually the runningbacks. each body type has a perfect position within a team.
America teams do not play Canadian teams. In America you get 4 tries to get a first down. So that means you get 4 tries to advance the ball 10 yards and if you manage that you get 4 more tries to advance the ball 10 more yards. In Canada you only get 3 tries.
@thedailyenglishshow they do need to fast if you notice in the NFL those linemen dont have alot of fat is just all muscle and they are really fast, i dont knnow about canadian football though
@thedailyenglishshow, I'm american. And yes, Canada does play the U.S. I think that they follow all the basic rules and some of the more complicated ones too. The players with the extra weight usually play the positions of either "Line backer" or "Line man", Line backers try to break throught he defenses and get to the quaterback before he throws the ball. Line men try and protect the quaterback from getting tackled by the Line backers. It is more complicated then Rugby, but still fun
Fuck people stop calling it American football this is Canadian football theres a big difference

Well ... I feel pretty silly for calling it American Football now.
