If i remember this interview is in the DVD 'A Portrait' as well. It's all about Hilary Hahn. Great DVD and very inspiring. And if I may add, you peeps should watch "From Mao to Mozart" if you haven't watched it. It would be very inspiring for all musicians here. :)
LOL ... Gitlis ... but he is not french and has an accent while speaking french... he is israelian but nonetheless speaks french in the video. he must have learned french when he went to the Conservatoire de Paris and studied with Enesco and Thibaud.
si, it is indeed from "The Art of the Violin: The Devil's Instrument" don't ask me WHY it's called the DEVIL's instrument and the CELLO gets to be GOD's instrument, but either way it is a VERY good DVD! One of my violinist friends gave me a copy and I would highly recommend it to anyone especially if you are a violinist or enjoy hearing the instrument and learning about the great violinists of the past! It also has commentaries by Itzhak Perlman and other older violinists.
It is called "the DEVIL`s Instrument" because Paganini was known as "the one who has a pact with the devil". The german poet Heinrich Heine gives us a very interesting description of how Paganini was at the stage. He was also named as "the Devil" himself! So, the name of the video is like a "historical referencial nickname" to this absolutely beautiful instrument...
...I mean he "sounds like a freak" in a good way! It's cool to have a trade-mark on how you do something.Playing flat-fingered with long nails, I wouldn't mind seeing that.
was she only 19 in this video?

There's a french guy and half the time you can't understand what he's saying. It features material of Elman, Paganini, and many others.

Ivry Gitlis...I didn't know you could put on subtitles at first, so I just waited for him to finish talking all the time.

I don't think you'll mind listening to Elman either. He's got a signature tone that you can't find anywhere else.
