The word 'religion' makes most people defensive. Christianity is not about being ‘religious’ but about allowing the Lord Jesus to free us from the bondage of the world and to follow His footsteps which lead to salvation of our souls; to be ‘born again. John 3:3. There are so many religions and Christianity should not be mistaken with the confusion that religions generate.
If you go by Prothero's definition of religion, you would have to consider medicine a religion. Noticing a problem than prescribing a method of stopping that problem is the goal of medicine, however it most certainly is not a religion.
good discussion. I'm Theravada Buddhist i do meditation sometime from the venerable Ajahn Cha in youtube. That's help me understand more about my own suffering and other human and animals.
so what I am understanding is that for an individual to end their suffering is to end all thought and go into what can be described as another consciousness (and/or a type of vegetative state) to ESCAPE suffering?
And it sure seems like a lot of thought is involved just to end all thought
A quick disagreement: Theravada Buddhists are the ones most insistent on sticking to the true words of the Sakyamuni Buddha, which is why they stick pretty clearly to the Pali canon. Mahayana Buddhists, however, have produced many more sutras because the production of sutras is not limited to just the Sakyamuni Buddha. The Zen patriarchs, for example, wrote their own sutras.

Buddhism is all about being free from desire.

@ModDangFc Yeah. And to do that you would have to do nearly nothing. So your karma would be nearly nothing, and you wouldn't suffer.

Most devout Buddhists wanted to become a bodhisattva and attain Buddhahood, that is their reputation and it means a lot to them.
