@Lehmann108 yeah dude, this was really a long time ago, but you're right, I hate this video. I only have it up because people keep telling me not to take it down. Otherwise I'd be better off forgetting it!
I need to get something brand new up, this was 3 years ago. Maybe I'll use the same song and replace this one. Not a bad idear.
I have many times since this video, also front a band where I play the bodhran 33% of the songs on stage. Like I said in the video, this is over 2 years old.
This video, not so good. Try following something I've done a bit slower, simpler, and more technical. Besides, don't learn off a bad take of mine, you'll instill bad habit!
that's a 16" x 2.5" model. I now have an 18" x 5" model by Paul McAuley in some of my new videos and on our band promos. Of course I could take the statement and say "bigger than yours" .... lol, but I'll refrain! :D
ah, I've seen Gaelic Storm live several times and I've always wondered what that "drum" (now I know "bodhran") is called because I love the sound. you are so calm and relaxed when you play. I like it, best wishes in your playing.
Well, never got the paul mccartney look alike before! Suppose I will take that as a compliment :)
And I'm sure if he dyed his hair red he'd be a lot sexier :P
Thanks for the playing comment, I still don't like this video at all, but maybe one day I'll redo it. Hard to toss even a mediocre representation of talent when there's so many hits!
Wow, that's cool! I upgraded recently to a paul mcauley. I have a couple vids on here featuring it, it's also the drum in the songs from our album I've posted (I think I only have one up at the moment).
I actually just got it today. It's my first bodhran so I'm still trying to figure it out. Problem is I'm in College so my roommates are gonna be driven mad by it. Oh well! :)
yeah I definitely learned the same way. Eventually roomies get used to it. I think is a perfect bodhran to learn from. Eventually you'll want something more professional if you decide to keep playing, but it's a decent drum!
Eh, I do it for fun. When I posted this vi I was still in my first year of playing. It's been almost three years since I recorded this I think...I feel I've gotten a lot better since ;)
See, I think it sucks, it's old and the rhythm is weak. I think I've come a long way since then: better drum, better grasp on the music, etc. Either way this video has become immensely popular and for that I'm grateful! Glad you like it, and yes that is me.
I'm afraid to update it. First, I got a lot of comments on this video. Second, I'd lose the nearly 16,000 views this video has reaped. Otherwise, it'd be good to try doing over again, and I've entertained the thought a lot recently.
Yeah, see my newest video with my new bodhran. This drum was good, the video here sucks (I was still at the beginner's stage of playing) and now I am a bit better with a premium qaulity drum at my fingertips. It's worth the trip over even if you only catch a few seconds.
The fever is sweeping the world now. Believe it or not, three years ago when I picked the bodhran up I only saw a handful of vids on youtube, amazingly enough I was fortunate to hit the wave before it formed and was swept along for the ride here.
This video is too old. I'll probably be re-recording it again in the near future, I don't like how poorly I played this, in all honesty. Glad you enjoyed it though and hopefully you'll like some of the others too ;)
What kind of drum are you playing with now? Did you ever try and modify a cheapie to improve the sound? I've attempted to adjust the tension on my non-tunable with lanolin, but it hasn't helped. I've read about mild sanding to thin the skin a bit. Any advice?
I'm using a mass produced drum here, 16x4 and tunable. I personally stay away from non tunables as much as possible, and thinning the skin in my opinion removes a lot of the bass and dullness in the tone. Lanolin works well, so does olive oil :)
If you ever need help, you know where to find me. Best luck on learning it, I was a trite bit slow but came around after a while. I'm still waiting for a mysterious 220 dollar check to come out of nowhere so I can buy a customised and professional bodhran. And I do believe that check is coming :) Just don't know from where yet. When I get it though, it'll sound amazing.
Man, I played the piano classicly for 16 years before trying celtic music, you are on the right track! I just spent an entire night booking shows and it's a lot of work, but it's worth it. Don't give it up for anything! Slainte!
I don't bend my wrist at all, in fact most people don't. There's no real way to play the bodhran, but generally speaking there are a few rules. I have a tutorial video, so check out my channel.
One of my favorite things to do in my free time - pop in a CD of Great Big Sea or Gaelic Storm and play along with Sean and Steve! I've been told I'm good, but of course I've never played in front of a REAL bodhran player, so...
Well post some youtube vids up :) GBS is a great band in my opinion, they've done so much with a style everyone thought wouldn't be popular. Gaelic Storm is something else too, but I find a lot of their traditional stuff to be rather cliche at times. Either way both bands have some good bodhran songs.
man theres hundreds of beats in ya jst waiting explode...strengthen up that back and let the magic happpen with the stick nd be careful of your timing...keep it up
I'm more and more surprised that this is the first and often only video people find and comment on of mine while I believe it is by far the weakest of them I have here on youtube (as well as oldest). Please feel free to browse one of my more recent endeavours, I feel it will be a little more consistent than this one ;)
No problem. Personally I don't like this video too much because I'm not too good in it rhythmically, but there are some really good new ones I've posted with better drumming in them :)
Yep. It's a frame drum from ireland called a bodhran. As for the song at 1:47, there should be a comment here with the names of the songs...I don't remember them off the top of my head.
Great, but I think your seat is too low, try a normal chair, maybe it will help you to hold the bodhran and tipper in a better position. I read some comments...I suggest the same: practice, and practise. Good luck!
I am glad to see that you are still hanging in there even with those problems slowing things down a bit.
I am learning the mandolin and taking care of my Mother who had a stroke and can't do anything for her self so my learning is slower then it should be but I'm going to stick with it.
WOW. I can't imagine....my issues are pretty much my parent's splitting and possible divorce issues, so visiting home for a few weeks turned into me being "Mr. Mom" for my siblings most of the time!
Either way, I'll try and keep plugging on musically. I'm headed back down to move to SC and there's where my band resides...we should have some new songs and vids up in no time
I have not been hitting it lately...a mix of too many problems and music sadly takes the hit. Sorry I looked bored, I think it's more of a tired expression ;)
The last four or so vids have been really subpar. My apologies.

Bodhran should never be too loud. That is a common mistake made by most players. It's a rhythm accentuator, not the rhythm itself ;)
