  • Sexy!! all the bodhran players are bold and/or old lol ;)

  • @alinainriverland I'm neither and I'm female :)

  • I like it! keep it on!!!

  • La musique c'est le plaisir, cette vidéo semble plus être une performance qu'une démonstration de la joie de jouer du bodhran...

  • Your playing is awesome young man... but for God's sake SMILE; give me; us a beautiful Irish smile

  • Awesome!! Well done!

  • Don't give no never mind to the jefalous peeps, keep at it and you'll do great - I can tell.

  • @Hagarie - I'm not too good with gaelic, but I think I got it

  • Great play with the backlight showing the work the left hand does, well done lad!!

  • @yavrukanguru - need plane tickets ;)

  • @ceolnaghra - again, this was (now) over 3 years ago, month 2 of the bodhran and the oldest video up on my channel.

  • Im impressed with the bodhran - its almost like a complete drumkit.

  • @fjujuul - sort of, although there are still limitations in tone.

  • u luk really bored :P :S

  • @musiccrazychic - yeah, hot and lazy summer afternoon based on my outfit I suppose

  • Dude, you're going to kill me for saying this, but you drag at times! One drummer to another. sorry. But you do.

  • @Lehmann108 yeah dude, this was really a long time ago, but you're right, I hate this video. I only have it up because people keep telling me not to take it down. Otherwise I'd be better off forgetting it!

I need to get something brand new up, this was 3 years ago. Maybe I'll use the same song and replace this one. Not a bad idear.

  • @irishlad6 Screw other people. :]

I like your hat, by the way . . . Just so you know.

  • i luv the bodhran it seems very tricky how do u do it? well anyway ur amazing C my channel

  • @TropicalRush512 - a lot of practice, of which I had very little at this time.

  • well done dude!

  • @musicfamily - not as well as my remake of this will be.

  • hey, had to look at the video again. still looks great.

  • where do i find all the songs they did on titanic!!!! im in love with them

  • red pubes

  • in the irish blood

  • I just gave that comment a thumbs up. Best random comment I've received.

  • You should sit in on a session...try to listen and move to the music. It will help

  • I have many times since this video, also front a band where I play the bodhran 33% of the songs on stage. Like I said in the video, this is over 2 years old.

"The times they are a changin'..."

  • that's an awesome drum, i have a Guinness extra stout bodhran.

  • looks good, nice tipper too. i made my own, the bodhran is one of the most amazing instruments i have ever played.

  • It's a great tipper, actually. I got it professionally made by Buck. Goes along nicely with my new Paul McAuley bodhran.

  • Wow.. you are quite amazing... I just bought one and should have it in a few weeks. I'm so stoked to learn it.

PS. Smile? You look wayyyyyy too concentrated, makes my head hurt lol.

  • Not a good video in the least. I'm definitely improved since then, as would be expected with 2 years + under my belt since this reeled.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Well I have mine now, and it's way harder than it looks... at least, timing-wise, so I'm jealous of your skill.

  • hit it harder so we can here it it's great and all you just got to get into it alot :) great job

  • Bodhran should never be too loud. That is a common mistake made by most players. It's a rhythm accentuator, not the rhythm itself ;)

  • you are amazing ! I keep trying to follow you but always get lost.......will keep trying.

  • This video, not so good. Try following something I've done a bit slower, simpler, and more technical. Besides, don't learn off a bad take of mine, you'll instill bad habit!

  • Great video!! How big is your Bodhran?

  • that's a 16" x 2.5" model. I now have an 18" x 5" model by Paul McAuley in some of my new videos and on our band promos. Of course I could take the statement and say "bigger than yours" .... lol, but I'll refrain! :D

  • Thanks, I don't have one yet but thinking of getting one.

  • whatever you do don't delete this video i luv it!

  • Thanks, appreciate the positive comment!

  • ah, I've seen Gaelic Storm live several times and I've always wondered what that "drum" (now I know "bodhran") is called because I love the sound. you are so calm and relaxed when you play. I like it, best wishes in your playing.

  • Thanks very much!

  • You're a bit similar to Paul McCartney ^ ^

Although he's got dark brown hair.

    Your playing is great!

  • Well, never got the paul mccartney look alike before! Suppose I will take that as a compliment :)

And I'm sure if he dyed his hair red he'd be a lot sexier :P

Thanks for the playing comment, I still don't like this video at all, but maybe one day I'll redo it. Hard to toss even a mediocre representation of talent when there's so many hits!

  • wow, looks and sounds great! Keep up the good work :)

  • I have that exact same bodhran!

  • Wow, that's cool! I upgraded recently to a paul mcauley. I have a couple vids on here featuring it, it's also the drum in the songs from our album I've posted (I think I only have one up at the moment).

  • I actually just got it today. It's my first bodhran so I'm still trying to figure it out. Problem is I'm in College so my roommates are gonna be driven mad by it. Oh well! :)

  • yeah I definitely learned the same way. Eventually roomies get used to it. I think is a perfect bodhran to learn from. Eventually you'll want something more professional if you decide to keep playing, but it's a decent drum!

  • Angus.......Go for it anyway!

  • cooooooooooooooooool !!!

  • Thanks :)

  • Gone yersel ma man ive been playin for 2yrs n i still havent got the bottle to post me playin!

i might suck and then again i might not!

    Peace fellow goatwhacker!

    r

  • Eh, I do it for fun. When I posted this vi I was still in my first year of playing. It's been almost three years since I recorded this I think...I feel I've gotten a lot better since ;)

  • irishload this is realy realy realy good!! love it. i have goosebumps!! is that you in the vid. x

  • See, I think it sucks, it's old and the rhythm is weak. I think I've come a long way since then: better drum, better grasp on the music, etc. Either way this video has become immensely popular and for that I'm grateful! Glad you like it, and yes that is me.

  • well i think its awsome and you should update it if your better. im watching toss the fethers now. the corrs. just love irish music!! x

  • I'm afraid to update it. First, I got a lot of comments on this video. Second, I'd lose the nearly 16,000 views this video has reaped. Otherwise, it'd be good to try doing over again, and I've entertained the thought a lot recently.

  • Nice rhythm, the drum itself seems to have a flat sound though. Or is that the mic?

  • Yeah, see my newest video with my new bodhran. This drum was good, the video here sucks (I was still at the beginner's stage of playing) and now I am a bit better with a premium qaulity drum at my fingertips. It's worth the trip over even if you only catch a few seconds.

  • erin go brah

  • excellent playing iv been playing drums for a while but im getting my first bodhran on thursday :)

  • The fever is sweeping the world now. Believe it or not, three years ago when I picked the bodhran up I only saw a handful of vids on youtube, amazingly enough I was fortunate to hit the wave before it formed and was swept along for the ride here.

  • it sure is, its a beautiful instrument :) I got it sunday and have been ploaying mad, badly i might add but ok for 2 days worth! :)

  • I'm still playing mine badly, 2 years after this video was made ;)

  • this is my favourite part of the movie, and your playing was awesome =]

i picked up a bodhran last year and tried teaching myself but i kinda think im doing it wrong lol. still, it was really great,,

  • This video is too old. I'll probably be re-recording it again in the near future, I don't like how poorly I played this, in all honesty. Glad you enjoyed it though and hopefully you'll like some of the others too ;)

  • i like how the light shines through the skin and we can see your left hand technique :) :-)

  • What kind of drum are you playing with now? Did you ever try and modify a cheapie to improve the sound? I've attempted to adjust the tension on my non-tunable with lanolin, but it hasn't helped. I've read about mild sanding to thin the skin a bit. Any advice?

  • I'm using a mass produced drum here, 16x4 and tunable. I personally stay away from non tunables as much as possible, and thinning the skin in my opinion removes a lot of the bass and dullness in the tone. Lanolin works well, so does olive oil :)

  • here eh,i play fiddle and low whistle mainly but i got a bodhran for christmas and i havent got a clue how to go about playing it.

slainte mhath dhut bho alba mate

  • If you ever need help, you know where to find me. Best luck on learning it, I was a trite bit slow but came around after a while. I'm still waiting for a mysterious 220 dollar check to come out of nowhere so I can buy a customised and professional bodhran. And I do believe that check is coming :) Just don't know from where yet. When I get it though, it'll sound amazing.

  • well played, but you look almost bored :)

  • Yeah, I've gotten better at bot playing and entertaining since then, especially when I'm performing with my band.

  • CALL ME 1-207-6933781

  • A little uncomfortable with calling strangers, sorry. I prefer email anyway :)

  • OK.....rivermaggie@hotmail

  • I love Celtic music and I've always wanted to play the bodhran but instead I'm stuck playing the piano

  • Man, I played the piano classicly for 16 years before trying celtic music, you are on the right track! I just spent an entire night booking shows and it's a lot of work, but it's worth it. Don't give it up for anything! Slainte!

  • thanks, I'll think about that the next time

  • good stuff, i hope ya like the way i play, im a lefty :)

  • Lefties are a treasure. It's hard to learn to play off of me since I'm opposite you, so apologies :)

  • Hey, I've just started playing the Bodhran, and am just wondering what angle there should be between your wrist and hand?

  • I don't bend my wrist at all, in fact most people don't. There's no real way to play the bodhran, but generally speaking there are a few rules. I have a tutorial video, so check out my channel.

  • great video my irish friend. long live Ireland and the Gaelic Culture

we love irish peopole here in South America

    Greetings from Guatemala ;)

    erin go brah !

  • Thanks mate!

  • your amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the compliment ;)

  • One of my favorite things to do in my free time - pop in a CD of Great Big Sea or Gaelic Storm and play along with Sean and Steve! I've been told I'm good, but of course I've never played in front of a REAL bodhran player, so...

  • Well post some youtube vids up :) GBS is a great band in my opinion, they've done so much with a style everyone thought wouldn't be popular. Gaelic Storm is something else too, but I find a lot of their traditional stuff to be rather cliche at times. Either way both bands have some good bodhran songs.

  • your a skilled bodhran player man. love to see it. so cultural keep it up .

  • Thanks. Pass on the good word!

  • Great! What's the name of that song? Thanks!

  • It's called "Titanic Set" by Gaelic Storm. It's on their "Herding Cats" album, and also on their retrospective album, "Special Reserve."

Gaelic Storm is the band playing in the steerage party scene of Titanic. This set is basically the same as the one from the movie. ^_^

  • You are so hot!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol...thanks

  • man theres hundreds of beats in ya jst waiting explode...strengthen up that back and let the magic happpen with the stick nd be careful of your timing...keep it up

  • I'm more and more surprised that this is the first and often only video people find and comment on of mine while I believe it is by far the weakest of them I have here on youtube (as well as oldest). Please feel free to browse one of my more recent endeavours, I feel it will be a little more consistent than this one ;)

  • Pretty good. Enjoyed that.

  • Thanks!

  • brilliant ! really good

    hey we could collaborate!

i could Irish dance and you could play!

  • I really enjoyed this =) Thanken you sweet

  • No problem. Personally I don't like this video too much because I'm not too good in it rhythmically, but there are some really good new ones I've posted with better drumming in them :)

  • Aww, don't put yourself down!! It was great =D Enjoy what you do and be proud x

  • Well thanks :) Glad you enjoyed it

  • Very much so =)

  • Me brother broke my bodhran. :( whaddyagonna do.

  • thanks

  • what it's the name of the song that you played at 01:47?

  • It's called "Drowsy Maggie"

  • nice!

  • hey,,, dude..... u are doing great.... :-)

  • Thanks...I actually hate this video and it's pretty sucky...but hey that's where improvement comes in right? :-P

  • he he he... dont worry abt wat audience say...

  • of where is that instrument? it's from Ireland?

  • Yep. It's a frame drum from ireland called a bodhran. As for the song at 1:47, there should be a comment here with the names of the songs...I don't remember them off the top of my head.

  • Great, but I think your seat is too low, try a normal chair, maybe it will help you to hold the bodhran and tipper in a better position. I read some comments...I suggest the same: practice, and practise. Good luck!

  • your not in time with the music most of the song.

practice keeping the beat more and listen to the music instead of just playing.

  • sounds in time until toward the middle to the end but the whole first part is in time

  • The first is a jig, The Blarney Pilgrim. The second is indeed Drowsy Maggie.

  • Thanks :) I have the worst luck finding tune names

  • Baby your wonderful,, but you need to smile! I know you how much you love playing so show it ;*

  • hey lol that playing is excellent,at least show you enjoy playing it.

  • The second song is called Drowsy Maggie.. What is the first song called, is it the Kerry Polka?

  • Something like that...maybe the Kerry Reel. Either way it's a rather well known instrumental.

  • I am glad to see that you are still hanging in there even with those problems slowing things down a bit.

I am learning the mandolin and taking care of my Mother who had a stroke and can't do anything for her self so my learning is slower then it should be but I'm going to stick with it.

  • WOW. I can't imagine....my issues are pretty much my parent's splitting and possible divorce issues, so visiting home for a few weeks turned into me being "Mr. Mom" for my siblings most of the time!

Either way, I'll try and keep plugging on musically. I'm headed back down to move to SC and there's where my band resides...we should have some new songs and vids up in no time

  • I have not been hitting it lately...a mix of too many problems and music sadly takes the hit. Sorry I looked bored, I think it's more of a tired expression ;)

The last four or so vids have been really subpar. My apologies.

  • Hey dude i like it, although i have to say you looked bored at the beginning of this one lol. I took your advice and have been playing along with some of your videos, its coming along rightly. Keep up the good work man
