We "can't" secede? Secession is as American as cheeseburgers. The word "American" is from when British citizens seceded from Britain and renamed themselves "Americans".
It was illegal for the British citizens we call our "founding fathers" (whom were slaveowners) to secede from the British's democratically elected parliament who was overtaxing them. But they can and did do it.

The reason every state gets an even number of Senators is because we are a collection of Sovereigns.
The right to secede was a fundemental principle of the Republic. Had George Washington known that Abraham Lincoln would one day wage war against the south for seceding and prevent it by murderous acts of way........he would have thought Lincoln to be our coming Hitler. This is because the Republic was begun with the soverignty of the states as its most important element. The founding fathers knew that the states would secede if the Congress went overboard....so they would not.

And if you check on youtube you can find Gov Perry stating he soesn't support secession but it would be up to the people anyway. The Constitution limits the powers of the Federal Government, not the states or the people. So for some with limited cognitive ability it's bigger than just TEXAS.

The Constitution limits the Federal Government and what is not within their power rests with the states and the people. The Constitution is not elastic that can be stretched to achieve your goal. To all of you saying secession is treason, think about this: The Constitution is a contract entered into by the states, the federal government has broken that contract by usurping powers not granted to it by the Constitution, powers which were reserved to the States and the people. I don't think many of you have even read HCR 50 that was just passed by the Texas House, which is what Perry was talking about in the press conference Glenn is referring to. Nobody, not even HCR 50 mentions secession, it talks about how great the Union is and HCR 50 itself serves as a memorial to the Congress of the United States. HCR 50 is about reaffirming the Constitution and telling the Federal gov to back down, and let the states have more control, per the Constitution.
If Texas were to secede, we wouldn't be alone, many states have passed or are in the planning stages of similar legislation. Texas has it's own oil refineries, ports of trade, an independent electrical grid, etc. The dems and repubs are running the country into the ground, caring little for the plight of the States. The States can come together and rectify the situation, seeing that it is OUR gov, funded by OUR money, that is supposed to serve OUR interests, not DCs.

Um, federal doesn't have any money... it's the peoples' money, which would stay in TX. All income tax would go to TX, and TX could lower the tax greatly, and still have way more gov't revenue. Why? Because State gov't by its nature is more efficient than federal. The seceding State's people would be more prosperous. Fed would lose MUCH more than TX.

New England did not secede. The Federalist Party died because it even CONSIDERED secession as it was understood by all that the Federalists were considering committing TREASON.

It was illegal for the British citizens we call our "founding fathers" (whom were slaveowners) to secede from the British's democratically elected parliament who was overtaxing them. But they can and did do it.

The right to secede was a fundemental principle of the Republic. Had George Washington known that Abraham Lincoln would one day wage war against the south for seceding and prevent it by murderous acts of way........he would have thought Lincoln to be our coming Hitler. There are 20-30 states already that have passed resolutions like HR 50 in Texas. They are telling the Fed that what is not spelled out as their power belongs to the States and the people. The Constitution limits the powers of the Federal Government, not the states or the people. So for some with limited cognitive ability it's bigger than just TEXAS.

The Constitution limits the Federal Government and what is not within their power rests with the states and the people. The Constitution is not elastic that can be stretched to achieve your goal. i know most of you don't know this because you're averse to research and would rather be led by the hand to all conclusions, but the states rights movement in Texas started during the bush admin. so to say we are acting hypocritical and that this is a racist movement proves you don't know shit. republicans and democrats wrote our resolution reaffirming the 10th Amendment. not only that, but perry states on his website that he will never support secession. the debate on Texas secession is moot.

I don't understand how people can be led in by this non-sense. Chris Matthews tries to make the principle of secession sound so radical and extreme. Honestly? I recall learning in grade school that the United States was built on the principles of Popular Sovereignty and Consent of the Governed. Look at the Declaration of Independence!
If any state wants to leave, they ought to be able to without the federal government invading their lands. Lincoln made the wrong decision.

To all of you saying secession is treason, think about this: The Constitution is a contract entered into by the states, the federal government has broken that contract by usurping powers not granted to it by the Constitution, powers which were reserved to the States and the people. I don't think many of you have even read HCR 50 that was just passed by the Texas House, which is what Perry was talking about in the press conference Glenn is referring to. Nobody, not even HCR 50 mentions secession, it talks about how great the Union is and HCR 50 itself serves as a memorial to the Congress of the United States. HCR 50 is about reaffirming the Constitution and telling the Federal gov to back down, and let the states have more control, per the Constitution.

If Texas were to secede, we wouldn't be alone, many states have passed or are in the planning stages of similar legislation. Texas has it's own oil refineries, ports of trade, an independent electrical grid, etc. The dems and repubs are running the country into the ground, caring little for the plight of the States. The States can come together and rectify the situation, seeing that it is OUR gov, funded by OUR money, that is supposed to serve OUR interests, not DCs.

Um, federal doesn't have any money... it's the peoples' money, which would stay in TX. All income tax would go to TX, and TX could lower the tax greatly, and still have way more gov't revenue. Why? Because State gov't by its nature is more efficient than federal. The seceding State's people would be more prosperous. Fed would lose MUCH more than TX.

Secession and sovereignty is VERY liberal because it is about giving the common people more liberty and justice through better and more efficient government.
This is why the Founders gave us a federation of sovereign States (federal republic), rather than a singular "nation"... they realized that the US is a salad, not a bowl of tomato soup. Centralism equals oppression!

In hind sight, maybe the rest of the country doesn't need Texas. Libs are actually mad for another reason: talk of secession is a rejection of their Utopian dreams, a slap in the face. They deserve it of course.
Now if there is one state that deserves to be EXPELLED from the union, it's California. I think we should put up a wall around it. If Mexico wants it back, let it be. Maybe they can straighten it out (we've been bad stewards, letting it get wacky like it is). Goodbye goofballs!

Google it. In 2007, the Federal Government collected $225 Billion Dollars from the state of TX in Federal Taxes. When Texas does secede, they would keep that money in the sovereign State of Texas. No state in the union gets back all the money that they pay to the Fed Govt. Texas wouldn't need a bailout, they would ultimately be better off without the Federal Government, I mean seriously have you looked at our current Federal Budget?

New England considered secession and no one challenged the legality of such an idea. Massachusetts threatened to secede when Texas entered and no one challenged it. New England did not secede. The Federalist Party died because it even CONSIDERED secession as it was understood by all that the Federalists were considering committing TREASON.
The D of I has no legal authority aside from its declaring indpendence and, had the British won the Rev War, its signers would have been hung for committing TREASON. And, as Jefferson made clear throughout his life, there is no right to revolt against a democratic republic.

Jefferson made clear that, in the context of a D-R, "alter or abolish" meant "election", not violent revolution.
