even if he was an expert you shouldn't just go online and then decide to eat wild anything just because an internet video has someone doing it without doing real research from reliable sources. it's just common sense.
thank you for taking the time to make these informative videos. As for azacs comment - why don't you try making some videos and just see for yourself how difficult it is - it is a learning experience - as for me - I like the style - it's like taking a walk with a friend - much appreciated.
pods are edible ,young shoots and leaves and flowers.. You have to boil the plant in three changes of water ten minutes each time like poke to make it safe to eat its not really a survival plant because of the boiling process.. Do not eat the plant unless you boil it like I explained here you will get sick
The flower, before it opens, is edible and quite delicious - better than broccoli! I picked some when the flower clusters were still close together and steamed them with young asparagus. Try it!
Good video, gets people talking and makes them aware of their environment. ;-)
Thanks for sharing. In our area of south central Texas, we have the Antelope Horn milkweed, which doesn't grow very tall (maybe 10-12 inches, at best) but produces these interesting balls of flowers. Similar leaf structure as your type, though.
thanks.i had no idea what milkweed looked like.i did know it was edible pods and ,has white latex.pods need to be cooked with change of water few times, like you said it may be extremly toxic.
another use for the "milk" or sap is to remove 'brown spots' on your skin. dab the sap onto the spot and let dry, it will start to remove the spot after several applications, forming a scab where the brown spot was. when the scab falls off it leaves no scar. It is also used to remove "skin cancers".... works in the same way.
milkweed, goldenrod:) makes me a little homesick. the fluffy milkweed pod seeds were great fun in the late summer and fall. you can pop them open and scatter them in the breeze:)

That's great but since there might not be a regular guy in front of you do us all the favour of thinking ahead and imagining how a regular person will feel in they watch a 5 minute video for 2 minutes worth of it they are just being told i don't really know about this you should go look it up somewhere else. If you want to be a regular guy stick to what you know!!!!

@cutlerylover You may find it interesting, but in India the plant that has similar sap and similar seeds, called Dhatura, is offered to Lord Shiva ,the great Chemist who used the seeds as an intoxicant!!! Maybe if we ate the Milkweed seeds ,the effect would be the same .Wait till they ban growing milk weeds!!!
milkweeds are rather common but i dont believe any of it is edible or worth eating for that matter unless you are a monarch butterfly. very interesting info on the usefulness of the plant however.
the flowers taste like brocolli, but its such a small tioem frame to harvets them and eat thgem its not the BEST known wild edible...alos the small stalks cna be cooked ina few changed ofm water and are ok, but bland in ym opinion...
oh shit now i know what these r caled thanx! i saw this exact same thing near my Cogo's store and i told my ffiends i planted them there but i never knew what they were called to i called them milk pods lol. now i know . thanx
The edible part is the pods when they are young, 1 1/2" or smaller. From personal experience, I can tell you that they taste like snow peas when raw. They can be chopped up and boiled, then eaten with butter and salt. When prepared this way they sort of taste like corn, but not quite.
The flowers when they first come out and are bright pink are very sweet and tasty. Unopened flowers look and taste a lot like peas.
Anyone that post plants should also talk about the poisonous lookalikes. Like he said, get a couple different sources Because Dogbane shoots and Butterfly-weed shoots look a lot alike and are Poisonous! common milkweed: downy-hairy with milky sap; Dogbanes: Hairless; Butterfly-weed: Lacks Milky Sap.
I dont think there is any of it you cna eat raw, but you cna prepare parts of it which is perfectly fine to do, but messign around with wild edibles is somethgin you need to rtesearch alot before doing..
Yeah I know I'v been an Outdoor Educator at one of the largest Nature Centers here for the past 5 years leading kids in Nature teaching them to respect and care for it as well as how to have fun in it. Which is why i was kinda confused because I know monarchs are toxic to birds and such
The young shoots, young leaves, bud clusters, and flowers are all edible. The seed pod is edible when it is young. You need to boil it in 2 changes of water to remove the bitterness though. Tastes good with butter and garlic salt.
It might be edible, but whatever you do dont get the sap in your eyes. I did when I was younger and it blinded me for a few hours and my parents had to call poison control. Flushing your eye's for 15 minutes straight is no fun at all.
The only thing I know about South Dakota is that we are the only state the hunts our state bird(ring-neck pheasent). Amazing video, I hope to see the next ones soon :)
Yes I know how to make a fire with a bow drill, some good vids here on youtube search it as well as a hand drill (whithout using the bow) my favorite way of makign fire is with flitn and steel, but even though you cna find both flitn in the wild as well as a form of natural iron to do it, its hard to find in alot of areas...but the bow drill and hand drill can be done with just wood and in the case of the boew drill you need a string of some kind, but worst case senario you could use a shoelace
Also a less heard of method is the "fire sword" where you has some tinder sandwiched between a split wood(different wood is better then others) and a third is sawed over the tinder to create an ember to light the tinder.
Yeah, another not so common way to amke fire is a "fire thong" some tribes use this to make fire by fruction usign natural cordage, although In have seen it demonstarted with shoelaces as well as paracord...not that easy to do though...
Cool, I didn't know that I have never seena fig tree before, but I like figs...Only purchased from the store, infact when I was a kid fig nootens (spelling?) were my favorite soft cookie, lol...
yeah, we have a fig tree in our backyard, u have to be careful though, cause according to my grandma getting too much of the white sap on your hands can result in alot of your skin peeling straight off.
Honestly I dont know, but I woudl say probably...however the pant itself wotn die from just that...these are reeally just big weeds, hard to kill them, lol...

rubber tree's are a good example of what isn't edible because of that milky sap. when the sap comes out you get latex and rubber. which probabl isn't the best thing to have in your stomach hehehe. but thatnks for the info jeff. 5 stars on all that cool stuff i've learned.
Actually marijuana can be very usefull medically, the problem is most of the people who fight for the right to legalize it just like to get high...lol...I own a great book on medical marijuana...The FDA will never aprove of marijuana becuase even though it helps for certain thgins it still delivers smoke to the lungs, and there already is a man made THC product, a pill called marinol...it has all the benafits from marijuana without the smoke...
Actually I woudl love to edjucate peopel on the benafits of marijuana...but most just like it as a drug, and dont see the health benafits...and it rasies legal questions as well so I wont, plus I don't have a plant to film anyway...

interesting, I read that the milky sap is mildy poisonous to us so if we ate it raw we woudl get sick, but when eating parts of the pants they have to be boiled twice to get rid of it...More info in future vids on that...
