He died doing what he loved. I think that´s the best way in which someone can die, I´d really love to die in that way, I mean: running. And I´m sure that many of you would like it, too.
i just bought his racing spikes and am using them in holyrood park this weekend. i hope that they give me good luck, you are very much missed ryan. RIP.
@vg5157 he died of a massive heart attack because of an enlarged heart. his heart stopped for 8min when he collapsed. his heart wasn't working for too long and the doctors couldn't do anything to make his heart beat again.
While on his way to winning the New York City marathon yesterday (novemver 11th '09), Meb Keflezighi crossed himself when he ran past the place where Ryan Shay fell. They both won that day
I am a runner...49 years old.I`ve always told my family that I don´t want to die in a hospital bed.Better die with my "shoes" on doing what I like to do..like Ryan. But sadly he died waay too early!!!!Sad!!
I went to high school with Ryan. (1 Grade ahead of me). You would see him everyday after school running. Didn't matter the type of weather either. Pouring rain, hot and humid, middle of a snow storm here in Northern Michigan with the winds whipping around, you would still see him running and in thin clothing. You are missed Ryan even though we never hung out. R.I.P.
What a shame, he was looking forward to that day as well. Just proves one thing: it is bad to wish your life away, I say enjoy it while your here and not chase dreams just allow them to come as they sometimes do from passion for your goals.
I miss youMiss you so badI don't forget youOh it's so sadI hope you can hear meI remember it clearlyThe day you slipped awayWas the day I found it won't be the same ohI didn't get around to kiss youGoodbye on the handI wish that I could see you againI know that I can't oh oh oh oh ohI
The things that we do should completely consume.....Ryan Shay was a person with a lot of strength and passion for running. What a loss to us all in running community. Rest in peace Ryan.
speechless...We were at the VIP tent when Hall and others were happy and covered with flags in the victory mode with spectators. My thoughts were with all the next day I toured the NYC marathon. GOD BLESS.
As a '99 Notre Dame alum, I'd like to send my deepest condolences to Ryan's family, friends and running companions throughout the years. Thank you to the creator of the video for sharing this tribute to Ryan.
As a runner myself still only in High School I am at a lost of words for what happened to Ryan Shay. May he rest in peace and continue to run with the legends like Pre. Run in Paradise.
I am very touched by this tribute and thank you very much for creating it. It is so terribly sad to think that Ryan went into this one as just "another race" and did not finish. May the running gods be with him. As a runner I know he died doing what he loved... Godspeed Workhorse!!
not only is it sad to lose such a young and talented person from our world...but he left behind a newly wedded wife of only 2 months. I send all my prayers to Ryans wife,be strong and get through this difficult time in a healthy way. i can even imagine how you feel. Ryan seems to be an amazing person and im sure that is saying the least. Rest in Piece Ryan Shay. we will miss your energy and love.
Ryan Shay ran past me during a run in Kansas City a few years back. I remember watching him go by. I feel honored to have run with such an outstanding person.
never met him, but heard his name all the time on northern michigan tv and im sure some of my friends knew him in the cross-country world, his family and friends are in my prayers!
I did not know him personally, but knew of him. Sad to hear about his tragic last run. He will truly be missed by many. God Bless You Ryan and those you left behind.
i never personally met him but he was one of the true distance gods of Michigan cross country - which was saying something in the late 90s. it's very sad to see him go, especially so young. i hope they figure out what happened at the very least so maybe we can see this coming in the future and his poor family and wife can get some solace from all of this.
omg lol i actually know ryan shay. his dad is my cross country coach. i allways seen ryan running past my house in the spring. He used to go to my school but he graduated. I miss him. he used to go to my house because he was best friends with my brother
Thanks for adding this. It's a great tribute. For a man his age, he has done so much beyond his years. I was actually thinking of him while running the NYC marathon yesterday.
Ryan past away one year to the day my cross country coach past way... way too sad :(

I believe I read that it had somethign to do with a enlarged heart.
He collapesed at mile 5.5 of the Olympic Time Trials and was pronounced dead upon arriving at the hospital.
Great runner.
Sad to see such a great pass away.
