there are no rules in guitar playing.. Marty chose to make up his scales..I don't know how to apply scales in my playing..what I do is I just noodle around when making solos,Imagining what the next note to play and connect all the pieces which is harder.. At the end I manage to make a decent guitar solo because I applied all the techniques that I've learned..

@1027patrick I can tell you, if you check some harmony theory, or even just learn modes, and then study and figure out how to apply those to determined tonality, which feeling has a A aeolian over a F minor progression... so there's no rules, but that theory make things easier for you

If it helps at all this is actually a fairly simple scale with a cool sound to it. In this video its simply the D harmonic minor scale (D minor scale with a raised 7th) starting on A, which gives you the Phrygian Dominant scale. Lots of guys use this scale because of its odd sound and fits nicely into a lot of chords. Lamb of God uses this scale and little chromatic twists here and there giving them that badass sound you all well and know if you listen to them. Which you should. LOG FTW.

my listening matured a bit. (And after playing guitar for a few years.). The Symphony of Destruction solo is breathtaking.

i think its important to learn them because you can discover in which scale a solo is played. if you know that you can improvise on that solo and other things

About the whole marty vs kirk thing, marty wins any day. Kirk hammet really isn't that good of a guitar play 2 be honest. Defend metallica all u want but they're not great. They're WAY better bands with a lot more talent. Now metallica is good but not nearly as good as a lot of other bands out there. Immortal guardian, the HAARP Machine, yngwie, dream theater, nitro, divine herecy, white chapel, ect just 2 name a very few rape metallica haha

Metallica can do that from time to time.

If a friggian dom scale is what he is playing where does it come from? Ans: D harmonic minor. Play the scale and tell me it's not the sound Marty is getting. He's just starting on different tones (a for the root of the chord he's playing vs D, the scale root but a passing or avoid note against the A sounding harmony. Both descriptions are get the same sound but one is easier to think of when improvising. Just my take. Love to all.
