I really love Pan Am, but have mixed feelings with this video. According to the mentioned goals, today's PAA must be Ryanair. But stating that would be the biggest insult against Pan Am, I think. Can we say, that the Ryanair story is a great thing, that began with Pan Am? I don't want to think about PAA as RYR's father anyways.
Only socialism can save the US Airline Industry. Capitalism kills, let's kill the free market capitalist system before it destroys us all of us. What USA needs is a nationalization of all major airlines under government-ownership and worker's control of the major airlines of the country. Airlines cannot be under private hands.
There are still boatloads of former Pan Amers out there who love and revere what the airline meant. I worked for Pan Am for twelve years, and you couldn't buy a better education than that. Those twelve years shaped who I am today. My dad would talk about flying for the Air Force forty years after he stopped being a jet pilot; I imagine we'll still be talking about flying for Pan Am for the next twenty or so-
gigi wolf, author of the Pan Am Pages on ChezGigi.com
@Juppie902 As noted the video was made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the airline, which was in 1977. Also the 747SPs mentioned in the video weren't available until Pan Am flew the first one in April 1976.
Without PAN AM we wouldn't have the likes of Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, etc. Juan Trippe created an airline that was years ahead of the rest and was a true pioneer of air travel. It's a shame that away from the jets PAN AM turned into yet another big arrogant American corporation that just spent its way to oblivion.
i think the lockerbie disaster was 1 of the main reasons why panam went bankrupt: they pissed on elementary safety rules and allowed a bomb onboard, that was a very stupid and uprofessional thing 2 do. shame on panam!
i've never been in a 747, wish i could though. i also didn't get a chance to ever fly with pan am (i was born in 89 and didn't board my first flight until the late 90s), but at least i got a chance to fly with twa (which to me is just as good as pan am) a few years before it merged (screw you american airlines and what you did to the twa flight attendants).
i miss the legacy airlines. what we have today just doesn't have that nostalgia you get when you think "pan am" or "twa".
My 1st flight was on a Pan Am 747 in 1972 from NY's JFK to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I still have the wings and a deck of playing cards that the stewardess gave me from that flight. I flew Pan Am to many destinations throughout the 70s & 80s and every time was memorable. What a classy airline they were. It is greatly missed. Thank you for posting this homage & thank you Pan American World Airways for showing me the world in style.
Ah, yes, the days where romantism was the golden gem for Indonesia itself. Remembered back then when they flew 707s and 747s to WADD, back on the days of my father's high school triumph.
Pan Am was the pinnacle ..the top of the airline industry..service was unequaled..what great memories..I remember flying the 747 for the first time and it was a Pan Am 747
Ah, back when flying was fun and exciting. I was a kid in the late 70's and I remember how wonderful it was to fly back then. Pan Am was the flag bearer of the U.S. Those white jets with the American flag up high on the tail were a powerful symbol of the United States. No current domestic airline has that mystique.
I worked for PanAm during the seventies until the beginning of the eighties. I will never forget this airline. Those were still the real days of flying. You were a passenger who was highly respected and were valuable revenue. Changed days nowadays! I am glad that I was part of the PanAm family and there will never be an airline like it again.
I wish Pan Am's goal was shared by today's carriers, rather than to gouge people for sub-standard service and treatment like cargo by airport security. Let's see... $500 for an uncomfortable seat, shitty "meal" a pillow to rent, and deep cavity inspection before boarding.... or a quiet minivan with good music, comfortable seat, whatever I want to eat at less than half the price...
@soccermomd00d uh, cheap tickets back then where almost double what we pay today. I can get from Dallas to Florida for $350 on American, thats the cheapest thats been in years. about 30 years ago that ticket would have cost me about $650 for coach, but the service was still a whole lot better. the public bought this stuff upon themselves when they demanded that ticket prices be dropped even lower. many airlines went out of business and the service quality went WAY down.
First: Pan Am had invested in 1970 large fleet of 747 airfraft and was expecting that travellers number will continue to rise, but it was not the case (because of the energy crises).
Second: Although the energy crises, in 1980 Pan Am had more income money than ever before, but it was poorly handled by Pan Am managment, thanks for that troubles continued.
Third: and most biggest mistake was that Pan Am leader C. Edward Acker decide to sell Pan Am's entire Pacific Division
To me, PanAm will always remain "The Worlds Most Experienced Airline" ... To bad it disseappeared. I had the privilege to be part of its work force in Brussels for over 21 years, right to the sad end, back in 1991. They had a slogan: "PanAm can Do !!!" What on earth went wrong.
What a wonderful airline Pan Am was. I was privileged to be a stewardess in the "good old days" of air travel and saw the world and was treated like family by this airline. I treasure the memories.!!! Commerical flying will never be the same!
@stingpower I know, the leaders of Pan Am at that time were too ambitious. If they went below 25 they would have lasted to day with the 747-400 and even the 747-8i!
I worked for Pan Am yes at times it was not run right, but the real reason was the way the US Government looked at them, they could not fly inter-city only international. When they asked FAA to change it, it fell on def ears. Latter on Pan Am bought national airways but by then the damage was done.
I flew Pan Am in 1969 and 1981 and saw the deteoration in customer service , that was the main reason they went bankrupt , you need to fly like everyday is your first flight. I do think they should be given a second chance and billions invested to get people working again, but base it on competence not affirmative action, and keep the flight attendants young .
Where are you getting your information " I flew Pan Am in 1969 and 1981 and saw the deteoration in customer service , that was the main reason they went bankrupt " Supply documented facts supporting your claims... The docmented facts from trade publications and books state Pan Am collapse was due to U.S. Govt indifference, terrorism and poorly executed management decisions..!
Pan Am placed the first order for the 747-100/SR/B on Apr 13, 1966, ....the first Roll-Out was on Sep 30, 1968, ....First 747 Flight on Feb 9, 1969, Certification on Dec 30, 1969, ....Pan Am received the first actual delivery of the 747 on Dec 13 1969, and it was put in first Pan Am revenue service on Jan 21, 1970. Long Live the Late, Great Pan Am Airlines.
It was glorious, flying in those days. I feel saddened for the generations that never thrilled to approach a 747 on the tarmac, climb the stairs and enter the huge aircraft. Then the service would begin and everything on the ground was forgotten. Pan Am was THE American flag carrier and her elegant act has never been duplicated.
if only it wern't for the lawsewt after the lockerbie bombing of pan am 103 pan am would still be running today in 2009 and like you said today we get crudy airlines that have horible food and terible service. I went on continental and when I tasted the pasta I spent 10 minutes in the tiny bathroom of the DC9 throwing up like crazy but air new zealand has good food I flew on a 777 with TV screens with like every existing movie and a remote that pops out of the armrest it was so cool
After working in the transportation industries for many years, this commercial brings tears to my eyes. As a child, I always admired Pan Am -- it was special, indeed.
Because I've lived my entire life in Canada, I never once flew Pan Am (simply because they never served my city or flew the routes I flew as a kid), and yet not even THIS CRAZY CANUCK was spared the sunken-hearted feeling when this carrier closed the book.
so sad! Pan Am stopped operations in my country during 1975, and now United replaces them. If Pan Am revived and continued RTW flights I would fly it first from Saigon to LAX

Pan Am's 80th Anniversary Celebration was held in Miami on October 27, 2007 and attended by hundreds of former Pan Am employees from around the world. The Mayor, Manuel A. The last comment about "The best chapters are yet to come," is sad. Instead, it was a decade long slide to bankruptcy. I flew on Pan Am's last flight out of Nairobi to Frankfurt on October 14, 1991. The flight crew received roses; drinks were free. Even on it's death bed, Pan Am was a 5 star airline. Someone needs to revive it.

The A380 is probably the king, but an ugly one! A 747 has graceful lines, while an A380 looks bloated.

Yes, but Pan Am had more than one 50th Anniversary. This video was made probably in 1977 to commemorate the founding of the airline in 1927.

Very beautiful video. You gotta love the music. Is it me or it sounds a little bit like the jingle "You can't beat the experience"?
