@hungryman211 I don't think it's a conspiracy, just a simple misuse of power. Example: an axe was made to cut down trees, but that same axe can be misused to cut down people. The law may have been set with good intentions, but now the power has been exploited and perverted with harmful results.
@steveoo5 true, but at least they get people to think about the other side of the debate by digging up some interesting arguments. also this video is pretty legit.
Poaching is pretty bad (there are just a handfull of white rhinos, now), over fishing and polution. They the main causes of today's indangered or instincted species.
I think the real point of the show is to show that there are 2 (or more, often extreme) viewpoints to every issue and that one should really do a lot of research on both sides before they decide what side they want to agree with or join.
Endangered animals aren't even a problem. We kill animals. And what. If it wasn't fot guns and superior intellect they'd wipe us out, you think there'd be a commitee of lions saying 'we need to protect humans' Hell no. @coturnix19 You`re either a complete idiot or you`re troling to get a reaction. You can`t honestly believe a whale needs arms or legs, they`re perfectly evolved for life in the ocean
@Ninjadelusion conservation is needed because the vulnerable species are affected by unnatural forces, such as pollution and habitat destruction.these affect animals faster than evolution is able to react.Conservation attempts to rebalance the situation.Humans,as sentient animals, have a duty of care to the planet and animals
@TiberiousNeruda You mean Paul Watson, and he`s no pirate.Whales need protecting from the barbaric practice of hunting.whale hunting makes no sense economically, the Japanese govt subsidize their fleet. It`s also a horribly barbaric act, shooting an exploding harpoon into a highly intelligent animal.Whales and dolphins are right up there with apes in the intelligence sense.I`m not against fishing or animal farming but whaling should be consigned to human history along with bear baiting.
@grey9438 The percentage of species is misleading, especially since all historical mass extinctions take place over a much longer period of time than humans have been significantly effecting extinction rates. What matters is the present extinction rate vs. the standard background extinction rate, and the current extinction rate is several orders of magnitude higher than it would be normally.
If a spicies has so little members of it that it's classefied as endangerd would it realy leave an impact if they got extinct. I don't say that it's good if they get extinct but iy would not be the end of the world.
What people need to understand about nature-loving shit is... it really is bullshit, in human terms. We could go murder 90% of the species on this planet... all those exotic birds and bugs, all the ancient trees... in cold blooded human reality, they're nothing more than pretty shit to look at. They mean nothing for our survival.
The only reason to protect them is straight up honest love. If environmentalists would just admit that and drop the fear mongering, they would be much more respected.
@lavalizard3 Somebody failed biology class. its called interdependence. A species going extinct can have ramifications that effect the global ecosystem (we are part of that ecosystem). Trees depend on certain organisms to live (organisms that fertilize soil, pollinate, and more importantly produce carbon dioxide) . WE CAN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT TREES. Rain forests produce over 40% of the world's oxygen. Not to mention organisms also provide our nutrients.nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycle.
@murdock283 You have to consider old growth vs. new growth. New growth trees do not removed as much co2 as old growth. Some of the trees being cut down are 500 years old or more.
@Fmaack But also realize that the wood we use for our daily use only comes from tree farms. About a quarter of our country consists of areas of forest that are ONLY used for cutting, harvesting, and growing of trees. The trees you see outside of your place of residence are untouchable and CANNOT be used for lumber and such. So whatever trees we use for our use, such as paper will be replaced by new trees. It's all supply and demand.
@murdock283 Bullshit. There are 1000 year old oaks that are worth millions of dollars that are being cut down. Just because we have MORE trees doesn't mean we're better off. We'd be better off using hemp paper. It is ridiculous to have to cut down thousands of trees just for paper. It makes no sense. Not only are we destroying important ecosystems but we're also destroying one of the greatest sources of oxygen.
The market determines which trees are cut and the oldest ones are worth millions.
@Fmaack We aren't destroying important ecosystems. If those animals are hanging around the areas in which trees are getting cut down, they fucking move to a different area. They don't just stay in one place. They're not these helpless animals that we have to care for. THEY HAVE ANIMAL INSTINCTS. And yes, we ARE better off because we have more trees. How are we supposed to get our paper and lumber? Make it all magically appear before our very eyes?
@Fmaack And those 1000 year oaks you mention are just that: FUCKING TREES. Pretty to look at, but they're just trees. It's just like the wild animals mentioned in this episode. Nice and pretty to look at, but they're just animals.
@murdock283 The ignorance of people like you astounds me. "Only when the last tree has been cut down; Only when the last river has been poisoned; Only when the last fish has been caught; Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."
@murdock283 We are living in a period where there is more animal and plant extinction than there was in the era of the dinosaurs. You should take science seriously. It's all we have. Religion and corporate propaganda are BULLSHIT. Stop listening to magicians.
@Fmaack But I've read science that has said otherwise. And I'm not religious either. I'm an atheist. I think the radical environmentalists have made you feel so sorry for living your life, like driving your car, throwing out trash, using our resources, etc. It's the kind of elitism and snobbery that brainwashes people like you. You need to realize that we aren't living in the 19th century. Our advanced technology allows us to extract resources and make more with less of it.
@Fmaack Lol, I'm not making excuses for my lifestyle. I'll spin donuts in the parking lot for 4 hours if I want to. I think that you must've been one of the guys featured in the Penn and Teller episode of "Environmental Hysteria" that signed the petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. I think you've been brainwashed, bro.
@murdock283 I know what dihydrogen monoxyde is. I'm not a moron. It's very easy to make people look like morons based on sampling thousands of people and picking the few morons out of the crowd. You are the person who is brainwashed. Perhaps you should read into the issue a bit more. I've read both sides and I know which side I support. The side which doesn't believe in man made global warming are mostly made up of morons like P&T who have no background in science. They're idiots.
@Fmaack The founder and former head of GreenPeace Patrick Moore is very skeptical of man-made climate change. And he's a scientist. See, I'm a skeptic about everything. I think it would be a TOTAL waste of money and time to invest in all this shit to try to prevent something that won't even fucking happen. I'll leave it at this, since we obviously can't agree on anything: we honestly don't know what the hell will happen. We don't know if it's real or not.
@murdock283 three times as many trees as we did 100 years ago. thats not the point. most trees aren't endangered. the point in making is sure even if tree population did grow 3 times how much has our population grown? is the tree population enough to support our growth? no.
@traderkha >> it is enough because we are using trees for a hell of a lot less things every year from metal tables brick houses and e books see what i did THAR?>>
Penn and Teller just agree with anyone who fits in with their right wing libertarian philosophy.
There's no envirnomental problems, the rain forrests aren't shrinking, species aren't becoming extinct. Just carry on consuming and getting as rich as you can. It's your absolute right to not have your desires thwarted in any way by misguided do gooders who just want to spoil the party.
@murdock283 Burst my bubble? What a peculuar turn of phrase. If you could prove me wrong on these issues you would make me extremely happy, not burst my bubble. People don't want to believe these things but the facts are there. The rate of extinction of species at the moment is estimated to be at least 100 times the normal rate. Around 50 million acres of rain forrest are lost every year.
@fiveredpears Species go extinct, regardless of human intervention. It's all survival of the fittest. If they all die, it's their own fault, and there's nothing us humans can do about it. As for rain forests, most of those we lose due to forest fires (most of which aren't caused by humans), and third world countries cut trees down to help them survive, and have none of the technology that we have to replace the trees they cut down. Our country has two to three times the trees than 100 years ago.
@fiveredpears Also, keep in mind that some species can go extinct mainly because they are prey to other species, and get eaten. With this ESA, we are starving the other species from their food.
I don't know why, but I have this sever distrust of anyone named Snape. After I meet them on the street or TV, I have this recurring nightmare that they kill my principle.
I do not think the show 'Bullshit' is about doing the public a service as much as it is about showing how Penn can argue any side of an argument. I think they did a poor job this episode though.
We’re so self-important. So self-important! Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees; save the bees; save the whales; save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all, “Save the planet.” WHAT? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet? We don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven’t learned how to care for one another, we’re gonna save the fucking planet?
Saving endangered species is just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control Nature! It’s arrogant meddling! It’s what got us into trouble in the first place! Doesn’t anybody understand that? Interfering with Nature! Over 90 percent.. over… way over 90 percent of all the species that have ever lived — EVER LIVED — on this planet are gone. Whissshht! They are extinct!
Environmentalists have been caught "planting" species in areas that they do not nor ever have populated in order to get said area listed as protected. Assholes.
@SCROGY I wouldn't put it past certain groups, but the irony is that such an act is actually harmful to the environment (or rather the local ecosystem).
When will people learn that humans are not the end and be all of animals or anything! Mother Nature has a plan and humans can't affect it, the only thing we can effect is our own lives and barely.
@RHSTUDIOS What do you mean mother nature has plan and we can't effect. "Mother nature" can't have plan, and if we wanted to blow up the earth we have enough nukes to blow up the planet.
@mage1over137 That would destroy all humans and human creations. Your over-estimating the power of not the nukes but human intelligence. When Alfred Noble created dynamite they thought that would destroy the whole planet. And as you can see it did not, nukes are just another type of the Noble incident until something else comes along. And think about it, so many species are extinct. Most were flawed in a number of ways, humans are just the best creation so far but that does not make us good.
@mrjburk1 WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO SAY THAT??? with all honesty, ecologically this planet would be so better without human race, are you some kind of superior biology master, who has studied the whole species and their enviroment at least hundreds of humans life to come up and post that kind of statement? if it wasnt for them we all would be fucked up, so cut the crap and stop posting tasteless and stupid commentaries.
The "Competitive Enterprise Institute" are the ones with the political agenda. Look up who they are, & So is Penn from this show, if you haven't noticed how biassed he is yet, just realise that he is a research fellow for the ExxonMobil & industry funded CATO institute who share the same political agenda as the Competitive Enterprise Institute. They want the oil industry de-regulated for their own interests, which as Penn would say is "an arguable point, but be honest about your real agenda".

Penn can be interesting, i used to sub his channel on YT. Then one day he said the dumbest thing.
I am paraphrasing.. "And that is my problem with government run healthcare, we don't know if it works and we can't know..."
How is it possible to be that intellectually lazy. There is only one first world economy that does not have health care that is universally free at the point of demand and that is the US.
@gabiotta You mean all those countries that over the past few decades that have had to increase rationing of their healthcare while simultaneously raising the taxes every 5-10 years to fund it since it's constantly on the verge of financial collapse? Even the lowlands countries that are usually touted as the ideals are looking seriously at revamping the system since the Eurozone is about to implode financially due to bailouts to places like Greece (and Germany is getting sick of paying for it).
If you are so illiterate on this subject as to blame the economic boom and busts that happen in global financial systems on public health care, I shouldn't comment.
@DustinAndNatasha its no so easy man, there are many factors natural and antropic that can affect the lenght of a determinated species. an entire specie of a cantor bird was completely extinguished by spraying DDT in an island. that is just an example.
you know, the show might reach out to stupid people and help them understand things, however theres 2 major things standing in the way of the general public seeing this show: 11 not being on basic cable (i forget if its showtime or hbo, just recently started watching) and 2 all the swearing/cursing. people who believe in this religious and ethical bullshit also believe cursing is bad and would turn the channel off upon hearing the first swear word, or ignore it for its "bullshit" tittle
It's not exactly a hundred percent. What they do is capture a specific number of species, tag and release them back into the wild. After a certain amount of time they capture the same number of the species again and count how many are untagged and repeat the process. I'm sure there's someone here that can explain it better.
What a disappointment. I though Penn and Teller were about rational, science-based scepticism. This is just a clumsy political advert. Their beloved Patrick Moore is a professional far-right activist. His 'biology lesson' here is more like a lesson in corporation-approved pseudoscience. Bullshit indeed.
Enjoy the cash P&T, because if this is the standard of your work today then it'll be all you'll have left.
Can anyone else hear some of the Nine-Tailed Fox's theme from Naruto in this video? If you're familiar with this theme, listen closely from 1:29 - 1:59, remember that you can't hear the full version of the theme (of course), but you can hear some of it.. :)
Wait she teaches disabled kids, is in a wheelchair, doesn't own her own home, Government screwed her over, and she cant go take a piss that easy.
Goddamn! I wouldn't have believed she was real! Her situation could be alot worse. She is lucky to have that good of a friend. She could be living on the street right now and she's cripple. I dont mean to sound cruel but survival of the fittest does apply when your homeless
Penn and Teller need to do a Bullshit on people that think Americans are stupid. I'm so tired of reading post after post on how "Americans are so dumb, because they don't have passports."
I have to admid, I'm totally surprised by the fact that biodivesity is higher "today" than it was at any time in the history of the planet. I have a degree in biology, and I did not know that.
Google "Phanerozoic biodiversity"!
However, I do believe that extinction rate is accelerated by human influence. There is a LOT of people in the world, and they do need a LOT of land to produce their food.
@hypercub Just about everything that comes out of Moore's mouth in this film was made up by him on the spot. The current mass extinction crisis is scientific fact and no amount of corporate sock puppets spinning yarns that its all fine can change that.
This show should be renamed 'penn and teller TALK bullshit'.
The biology arguments are bullshit o_O You cannot even FIND all extinct species, there are only a few fossils and fragments, some kinds of life do not fossilize. Where did he get his number?
I think this episode wanted to go againts the hidden Nixon agenda, but it ridiculed something else and without a knowledge base, too.
I bet if God was real and came to earth about to smite everyone. Penn and Teller would explain how much bullshit he was full of and God would walk away sad lol.
This is bullshit. If animal extinct, it is all because they are not needed. For example: If icebears extinct what happens to us? NOTHING, cause we don't need them. If bees die, (which they don't) many people will die from hunger. Thats why they are made to survive. It is only natural.
i diagree there with you. sure, if icebears go extinct, it wouldn't affect us much, if at all. but that doesn't mean its a good thing for it could affect very well the environment they live in. icebears are carnivorous predators who hunt other species in their environment for food. if they go extinct, their prey would lose an natural enemy, possible reproducing in a very large scale and then cause a problem for anyone living there.
@Timberwolftrass the rippling effects wouldnt be that much. species dont go extinct in a generation. It is more of a decline. The environment is adapting as the species go extinct
@Timberwolftrass well right up to the point where they completely exhaust their food supply inevitably controlling the population, or at least giving local hunters access to a much much larger supply of complex vegetables "complex vegetables (anything that consumes and or eats a plant or plant based substance to grow to make meat or as used in the phrase :Bobby I didn't see you eat your vegetables."that's okay I ate my complex vegetables so I am good": that is good now eat your simple ones:)
Mostly I like P&T's shows, but I disagree with them big time on this issue; I do think the ESA should be reformed so that landowners are compensated for their land.
and soon Humans are gonna start fucking the same sex more often than the opposite sex and we will be on the endangered species list XD. good thing the Chinese still mate like crazy lol
A huge reason to why many animals are going extinct is because of the fucking humans. No one seems to EVER have an issue with the human over population going on. One day you will. Long after you've all sucked this world dry of ressources and killed anything but yourselves.
@cole3454657 Paul Watson is a well respected environmentalist who has dedicated his life to help save the oceans. SO what have you done with your life you homophobe?????

We'd be better off using hemp paper. It is ridiculous to have to cut down thousands of trees just for paper. It makes no sense. Not only are we destroying important ecosystems but we're also destroying one of the greatest sources of oxygen.
The market determines which trees are cut and the oldest ones are worth millions.
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack We aren't destroying important ecosystems. If those animals are hanging around the areas in which trees are getting cut down, they fucking move to a different area. They don't just stay in one place. They're not these helpless animals that we have to care for. THEY HAVE ANIMAL INSTINCTS. And yes, we ARE better off because we have more trees. How are we supposed to get our paper and lumber? Make it all magically appear before our very eyes?
murdock283 5 months ago
@Fmaack And those 1000 year oaks you mention are just that: FUCKING TREES. Pretty to look at, but they're just trees. It's just like the wild animals mentioned in this episode. Nice and pretty to look at, but they're just animals.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 The ignorance of people like you astounds me. "Only when the last tree has been cut down; Only when the last river has been poisoned; Only when the last fish has been caught; Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten."
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack I think that you need to wake up and realize that our world isn't coming to an end. It's even gonna last long after all us humans are dead.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 Humans won't live too long if all the animals and nature around us are DEAD. You think we live in a cocoon?
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack I think you live in a cocoon if you believe nature will die or all animals will die.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 We are living in a period where there is more animal and plant extinction than there was in the era of the dinosaurs. You should take science seriously. It's all we have. Religion and corporate propaganda are BULLSHIT. Stop listening to magicians.
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack But I've read science that has said otherwise. And I'm not religious either. I'm an atheist. I think the radical environmentalists have made you feel so sorry for living your life, like driving your car, throwing out trash, using our resources, etc. It's the kind of elitism and snobbery that brainwashes people like you. You need to realize that we aren't living in the 19th century. Our advanced technology allows us to extract resources and make more with less of it.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 Psuedo Science is not science. I also don't drive a car. Stop making excuses for your ridiculous, narcissistic, wasteful lifestyle.
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack Lol, I'm not making excuses for my lifestyle. I'll spin donuts in the parking lot for 4 hours if I want to. I think that you must've been one of the guys featured in the Penn and Teller episode of "Environmental Hysteria" that signed the petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. I think you've been brainwashed, bro.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 I know what dihydrogen monoxyde is. I'm not a moron. It's very easy to make people look like morons based on sampling thousands of people and picking the few morons out of the crowd. You are the person who is brainwashed. Perhaps you should read into the issue a bit more. I've read both sides and I know which side I support. The side which doesn't believe in man made global warming are mostly made up of morons like P&T who have no background in science. They're idiots.
Fmaack 5 months ago
@Fmaack The founder and former head of GreenPeace Patrick Moore is very skeptical of man-made climate change. And he's a scientist. See, I'm a skeptic about everything. I think it would be a TOTAL waste of money and time to invest in all this shit to try to prevent something that won't even fucking happen. I'll leave it at this, since we obviously can't agree on anything: we honestly don't know what the hell will happen. We don't know if it's real or not.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 three times as many trees as we did 100 years ago. thats not the point. most trees aren't endangered. the point in making is sure even if tree population did grow 3 times how much has our population grown? is the tree population enough to support our growth? no.

Now that's bullshit.
fiveredpears 7 months ago
@fiveredpears "There's no envirnomental problems, the rain forrests aren't shrinking, species aren't becoming extinct."
Um, yeah, those are actual facts. Sorry to burst your bubble.
murdock283 5 months ago
@murdock283 Burst my bubble? What a peculuar turn of phrase. If you could prove me wrong on these issues you would make me extremely happy, not burst my bubble. People don't want to believe these things but the facts are there. The rate of extinction of species at the moment is estimated to be at least 100 times the normal rate. Around 50 million acres of rain forrest are lost every year.
fiveredpears 5 months ago
@fiveredpears Species go extinct, regardless of human intervention. It's all survival of the fittest. If they all die, it's their own fault, and there's nothing us humans can do about it. As for rain forests, most of those we lose due to forest fires (most of which aren't caused by humans), and third world countries cut trees down to help them survive, and have none of the technology that we have to replace the trees they cut down. Our country has two to three times the trees than 100 years ago.
murdock283 5 months ago
@fiveredpears Also, keep in mind that some species can go extinct mainly because they are prey to other species, and get eaten. With this ESA, we are starving the other species from their food.

We didn’t kill them all.

When will people learn that humans are not the end and be all of animals or anything! Mother Nature has a plan and humans can't affect it, the only thing we can effect is our own lives and barely.
RHSTUDIOS 10 months ago
@RHSTUDIOS What do you mean mother nature has plan and we can't effect. "Mother nature" can't have plan, and if we wanted to blow up the earth we have enough nukes to blow up the planet.
mage1over137 10 months ago
@mage1over137 That would destroy all humans and human creations. Your over-estimating the power of not the nukes but human intelligence. When Alfred Noble created dynamite they thought that would destroy the whole planet. And as you can see it did not, nukes are just another type of the Noble incident until something else comes along. And think about it, so many species are extinct. Most were flawed in a number of ways, humans are just the best creation so far but that does not make us good.

I'm like.. Pick up the phone? Google?
He does not want to know...
gabiotta 10 months ago
@gabiotta You mean all those countries that over the past few decades that have had to increase rationing of their healthcare while simultaneously raising the taxes every 5-10 years to fund it since it's constantly on the verge of financial collapse? Even the lowlands countries that are usually touted as the ideals are looking seriously at revamping the system since the Eurozone is about to implode financially due to bailouts to places like Greece (and Germany is getting sick of paying for it).

@scottieman2 No, obviously not, but they do watch the population, especially if they notice dwindling numbers.
MsSeaKittens 1 year ago
@scottieman2

This is bullshit. If animal extinct, it is all because they are not needed. For example: If icebears extinct what happens to us? NOTHING, cause we don't need them. If bees die, (which they don't) many people will die from hunger. Thats why they are made to survive. It is only natural.
Kelol100 1 year ago
@Kelol100 Most historical relics in museums are "not needed" either, but they're still worth keeping so that we can learn from them.

i diagree there with you. sure, if icebears go extinct, it wouldn't affect us much, if at all. but that doesn't mean its a good thing for it could affect very well the environment they live in. icebears are carnivorous predators who hunt other species in their environment for food. if they go extinct, their prey would lose an natural enemy, possible reproducing in a very large scale and then cause a problem for anyone living there.
