Each time I see this I'm awed by how raw Whitney was in the early years. All that voice, but she hadn't yet learned to use it. Still, one knew she was going to be a huge star.
Nippy grew up watching Cissy sing this in her act...and had the opportunity to join her mother onstage for the first time at City Center....she was 12 years old...and when she opened her mouth to sing ...the audience rushed the stage...she fell back in fear..but Cissy caught her and edged her on..she was adorable and awsome!!!!
Anything before 1985 is definately RARE as this is pre-stardom Whitney. Only followers of Cissy and maybe a few Dionne Warwick fans could have known Whitney fans back then.
Whitney sounds like Betty Nelson, and her mother Cissy Houston with the transitions from chest to head voice and inflections. Thats old school gospel style singing right there in this clip. Some people can not get with thats why some Whitney fans did not like Cissy voice. But this is how the great sopranos of gospel sung. Whitney only changed her style to please Clive Davis and the mainstream public. This the way Cissy trained her to sing......
I know baz! Whitney has been doing echos since she came out . Whitney also sneaks a echo here and there in her performances much like Karen Clark Sheard. Whitney has been doing for so many years. I love when she does a echo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I actually like the fact Whitney took to her gospel roots, and I love this element of Whitney's voice. Whitney is not just a polished and technical singer with a beautiful voice. She also gospel girl as well. She fits in with the best woman of gospel along with Aretha and Cissy Houston her mother.
like i said *in my opinion" I dislike Whitney singing this song, and imo I think she totally ruined it. the performance is awful, even though her vocals are Amazingly Hot, I just cannot get away with this version of the song!
I don't think she ruin the song. I think mnealio like I dislike the vocal arrangements. The original is from Annie and most of us grew up to a certain way for that song to be sung, and this IMO was a young Whitney just exhibiting her vocal dexterity and versatility.
I love Whitney also...but I have to agree...she did this song WRONG!!!! This is the song from "Annie" right? Don't get me wrong...her vocals are amazing but this wasn't fo rher!!!
all coke-d out, honey.

It's rare and new enought that majority of her fans haven't seen. So if you don't have anything positive to say...don't say anything.

There is no way Whitney can ruin a song. Her voice makes anything beautiful. Therefore, your opinion is wrong.

Do you realize who you are talking about? It's Whitney. She was young there. You need to give young people a chance to grow vocally.
