This is my first time hearing this. Incredible peice! This drummer plays like a man possessed. Wayne Shorter is one of the most underrated musicians ever...which is unfortunate. He's a genuis!

This was the only total 'electronic ' piece on Atlantis and is a great composition! Larry Klein played electric bass but piano was acoustic and voices were eerie and beautiful. The last Silk hat and When You Dream were gems. Shere Khan the tiger! Wayne is a mastermagician composer, musician who always chose to sing.- FC
I have to admit I have not paid much attention to Wayne Shorter after his Weather Report period. I am impressed. He is a survivor. He outlived Grover Washington Jr who brought us all of that mess.
That last note, that last phrase, oh man the whole thing. The under 50 y/o jazzers have butchered Wayne's 60's compositions so incessantly, so crushingly, boringly often, but I think when they (finally) get to the WR and '85 to '95 stuff, the more detailed road map will lead to much more good music.
I saw Wayne perform this on this tour and also with another band in 1985 after the release of "Atlantis". Although there are many who have dismissed this period as Wayne's "lost fusion period", history will be not as harsh a critic. The fact is, he wrote some of his most interesting music between 1985-95...
Atlantis and the other albums from this period had a great, wide-open feel with lots of room for Shorter's horn at a time that was years past Weather Report's prime. What's interesting is how tightly composed this music was--none of this "we're all soloing all the time" that Zawinul espoused early in the WR years (hey, it worked for several albums!).
Yeah, bro. I agree 100% as the Atlantis LP was Wayne's first solo recording as a leader since Native Dancer. I also saw him perform this in 1985 with a different line up with one of Chick Corea's drummers in the band. In 1986 He did this tune at the Blue Note in NYC with Alphonso Johnson, Jim Beard and Kenwood Denard. The Three Marias is my favorite.
This sounds a little faster than the original version Ive heard, but i like it! It kicks butt!! I have always liked this song, playing drums with this is challenging and fun. The bass lines are pretty challenging too.
(sp) David Gilmore. Thank you for putting this up. I can't stop wondering when the young dudes will find this feel. Maybe they would have to play this song?
Wow. Thanks for putting this up. It's a great performance. Some of the phrases he improvs here are really cool. And it's closer to the album version than some of the later ones. Anyway, the composition itself is a masterpiece.
Kick ass playing!

I agree. Songs from "Atlantis" to "Highlife" are the best, I think.
