One should not mouth the words while dancing! It totally detracts from the facial expressions. It's amazing how many classical dancers fall into this trap. The singer sings and the dancer just dances!!
IMO, the recent "rigidness" and structure of the modern Kuchipudi style came from Master V.C.Satyam's unconcious blend of Bharatnatyam structure and form in his disciples when he taught in Madras...
when I learned at the school there, posture was stressed much much more than it is in the schools in the town Kuchipudi.
@puddlemini Yes I agree. I first visited the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai some years ago & was told the master there, Master Chinna Satyam-ji, hAd used a little Bharatanatyam to 'strengthen' his style a little bit. But it IS unmistakably Kuchipudi.
well, it is stunning to see this dancer dance this sacred art in the most appropiate place within ancient surroundings. I can see the dancer has low and slower movements that may seem asymetrical or uneven at times with regards to her movements , but it is still beautiful to watch even with her pace. Thank you so much for providing these magnificent videos of the Classical dances of India and I wish these was shown for general public viewing on TV for instance
I beg to differ, you must watch Chidambarm Kamalambal, Pandanallur Jayalakshmi, And the Kalyani Sisters - Jeevaratnam and Rajaratnam. This isnt old school, this is plain laziness n disrespect for the art.
I have watched a recent video (15 yers ago or so) of Mrinalini Sarabhai dance as well. They tend to change the older Bani to suit them.
A few years ago I saw Annirudha Knight, son of the Late Lakshmi Knight & grandson of legendary Smt Balasarawati, at the Kalakshetra Auditorium in Chennai. His arms were all over the place & not nicely finished adavus. I heard from Smt Shanta Dhananjayan that Smt Balasaraswati used to dance like this too.

As a student of Kalakshetra style I'm inclined to agree about technique but this IS 'old-school' as one poster point out.

Her technique is fine--- what do you see that is so "dispicable"? Too critical...
dinasaur2 2 years ago
Maybe we ARE a bit too critical. After all this video is about 40 years old.
