NO ANIMAL was 100% scavenger. Even vultures can and do kill live prey on occasion. Plus there's no way for something as big as T. rex to rely entirely on scavenging. It had very high energy requirements. The only way to imagine a T. rex living only on carrion is to have a cold-blooded T. rex which is a totally bankrupt theory and has been for 40 years now. Horner's stuff is as obsolete as a telegraph. What the heck was big enough to keep all those Triceratops in check, if not T. rex?
As long as I watch tyrannosaurus (and other meat-eater dinosaurs from his group) I think more and more that there were rather a very silly animals (there were almost kind of walking jaws with tail - no hands, no front limbs).
@metal87power that was an evolutionary trait that made it capable of killing just about anything. it's arms shrank to allow it's head to become a bigger, stronger and more effective weapon. proof of this can be found in the fact that it's eyes evolved along side that to become more effective for binocular vision and depth perception. a hunter's trait. so yeah. T.Rex's form was specialised. the predators with massive arms had them because they could NOT depend on their heads alone. unlike Rex
All these versions of T. rex are too bulky. The real T. rex was lighter and faster, not so fleshy and jiggly like in Jurassic Park or Jurassic Fight Club. Every CG animated T. rex so far has a lot of problems, none of them REALLY look like a believable T. rex.
The Greg Paul version of T. rex should be animated, it's the most accurate illustrated rex.
Why is that? It's based directly on the bones and muscle scars. Like other predatory dinosaurs it had most of the muscle in the thigh and calf, the ankle and metatarsals had barely any muscle at all, they were mostly bone and tendons (and the tendons were how the muscles operated the light ankle). His skeletal of T. rex still "looks" pretty massive.
T. rex was actually very lightly built for its size, it was only the mass of a big elephant but as long as a humpback whale!
@susumu07 Well I don't really know to much about these animals so I really don't know if he would have been so light. But, I saw an article by a guy, Jack Horner, in Science (the magazine) that said the Tyrannosaurus was to heavy to hunt and that it scavenged. It seems to me that an animal would have to be quite a bit heavy and bulky to be incapable of killing something. Thanks for clearing things up a bit.
Jack Horner is pretty much the ONLY scientist who still thinks T. rex was a scavenger. He's responsible for much misinformation, resurrecting this myth despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary. T. rex was not too heavy to hunt, indeed your hunting ability has less to do with your weight than with your leg design and with WHAT you are hunting. There were even heavier meat eaters like Giganotosaurus which were still active hunters, but they hunted slower prey than T. rex.
Plus there are partially healed tooth marks in Triceratops bones that perfectly fit T. rex teeth. so T. rex WAS a hunter, the proof is that like any hunter many attacks didn't succeed, and the survivors bore the scars of the attack for long before they died. the healed bone growth proves these were NOT dead.
T. rex and all meat eaters had a PERMANENTLY flexed knee design just for running. This limited their size to 45 ft. or less, to stay light and fast enough to hunt.
Maybe, but I'm also seeing similarities between each version of T-Rex. But all of the ones in this vid have one thing in common, the proportions of the size of the head compared to the size of the arms. However, with that in mind, I don't think the Jurassic Park version is the most accurate, because on that T-Rex, the arms look a little too big.
HEHE no animal is a 100% scavenger! Even vultures and jackals will hunt and kill lizards and small mammals. Hyenas hunt more than lions do!
And T. rex has far deadlier jaws than any of these animals. But I don't think Horner ever SAID T. rex was a 100% scavenger. He was rather trying just to undermine the notion of T. rex as a hunter.
That said, his default null hypothesis of scavenger is FALSE. Triceratops bones often have evidence of partially healed T. rex bites!

@susumu07 T-rex was a bulky, heavy animal, Not a light one. Paul's illustration isn't to accurate in my opinion.

Notice how different each (cgi) Single T-rex looks.. Maybe there's a copyright from each CGI company LOL..
I wonder which is the most accurate lifelike looking T-rex? Probably the Jurrasic Park's version?

T-Rex was both a hunter and scavenger. Unlike the theory proposed by Jack Horner that it was a 100% scavenger which I do not agree with it.
windowwalker008 2 years ago 20
Actually, Melissa T-Rex was a hunter only.
I mean, it was all to strong to be a scavenger and eat dead animals.
