@PrettyMuchIt i jst watchd dis mvie & idk. Itz like, stuff jst keep happening or sometimes NOT happening. Itz all flowy at first then BAM ghosts contact, old man's dead, her life is in danger, ghosts r popping up. Itz jst so weird.
Im sure you saw The House of the Devil, that had quite a change of pace/tone as well. Im quite a big fan Of Ti West, especially after seeing this and I think he did an amazing job with it. The tone and camera work were the best parts. Loved the suspense and the build of the movie, loved the ghosts, loved how things kinda got real for them, but I didnt like the ending. I think that everything was done very well but I can definitely see how not many people would enjoy this.
This reviewer is a fucking idiot. There is absolutely no "tonal shift." The movie is just silly, and silly throughout. It's basically a boring comedy trying to be a horror movie, but just comes off being cheesy and stupid and boring.
@peteagassi You can't watch this movie all the way through to the end without noticing the VERY INTENSE tonal shift 2/3 of the way through. Also you need to calm down and try to be a little more sociable, it will help you in the long run.
I thought you were right about the whole shift thing. It was a good ghost story. But it could have been almost like a short film. Some parts weren't that necessary.
Great review! I completely agree. It starts of relatively lighthearted & almost has this relaxed tone about it, then BAM! It all explodes & just leaves you there with so many plot holes. Sometimes I like when the tension is really built up in a horror film but it just doesn't work here, it's too inconsistent. It almost feels like the writer got lazy & just ended it all simply to finish off the story. I still thought it was entertaining though. I also thought some of the camera-work was clever.
I think the tone is what made it so good! The others make good points, only with Insidious the two differences were so different that it makes no sense how you think that the two halves don't fit!
As much as I respect your opinion, the way you're explaining it makes it sound like Paranormal Activity, which was hilarious at first but then got serious. It also sounds like the tone shift in Insidious, just reversed.
@SK8Paradoks That's definitely a valid point, but I think the difference is that I thought those two halves merged together well in Insidious whereas here it took me out of it too much. In Insidious, the part that scared me more was the first half so I was invested when it switched over to the crazier second half. In The Innkeepers it was the opposite, I was relaxed and then it switched to brutal-mode. I hope that makes sense!
@PrettyMuchIt maybe that's a good thing. they probably wanted the audience to get really relaxed and take them out of a horror movie aspect and then send them back into the true core of this movie which is horror when they least expect it which makes it more frightening.
@PrettyMuchIt wow I haven't seen the movie but really looks strange..cause i mean the poster looks like a Disney funny/adventure movie like those type of movies where the ghost becomes a friend and stuff like that hahah, but it's not and that's weird =/
This film was terrible. I can't believe it's at 75+% on RottenTomatoes. It's not even a film that's so bad it's good. It's just bad. Poor performances all round, especially from the main actress. Shame. Just my opinion.
If you liked house of the devil you will likely enjoy this as well. I think that The Innkeepers is a better effort that House of The Devil, why I will not say cause of spoiler alert.
If you are intelligent, and have imagination, this film can be tremendously scary. If you don't have those traits you will probably give this film a bat rating and a bad review.
Someone said this was more a comedy than a horror movie. That is simply a false statement, where the viewer must have put down a strong bias towards comedy in his or her interpretation of the movie. The only moments that could be interpreted as "funny" are totally logic situations that could occur in the context that the film is set in.
I never write reviews but I just want to defend this movie from all the bad reviews. This film is like a work of art, I would like to compare it to a musical symphony, with a perfect crescendo in the end. This is a movie that gets it's grandieur from the viewer that can manage to appreciate it, and what is so great about this movie is that it gives the viewer a chance to be scared. Most horror movies just put's the terror in your face and never leaves room for interpretation or imagination.
Hmmm. I might give this one a try. It definitely sounds interesting, hopefully the tonal shift won't be as much of a problem for me and maybe I'll actually enjoy it.
I remember you describing Insidious the same way as two different movies but that you enjoyed it a lot. But it seems like this film is more of two unbalanced movies. Not sure if that will effect my watching experience but i'll give it try.

Two movies I can think of that had intense tonal shifts that worked were Something Wild and True Romance.

Is this a little bit like 1408? If so I'll might check it out

@syndddd
A little bit, in that it's a haunted hotel... but, in my opinion, 1408 is a little scarier and it has this really great claustrophobic feel about it.
