  • R.I P. Rick... and thanks for the music :)

  • Who the fuck is that saying that Richard manual was ruining a harmony? r u crazy?

  • @idorkTheLine LOL!! Yea sort of surprised me too

  • @idorkTheLine Richard was amazing! His falsetto... OMG. He was just perfect in any way. RIP Richard Manuel. I truly miss u.

  • amazing, is that Stan Szelest ruining the chorus though? very high pitched compared to the rest

  • @Dewie101 Really??? I think you may be hearing Richard Manuel's falsetto but I wouldn't use the term "ruining" to describe it.

Besides Stan didn't join up until '86 after Richard dies but he sadly dies during the Jericho sessions in '91.

  • @Dewie101 Part of the harmonic scale. Beachboys and every boby else does alt. scales .. every body does it. it is not supposed to match guys every time allthe time.

  • @Dewie101 Stan Szelest? LOL

  • Danko is KING

  • rick sings with such emotion can we trade him for lady blah blah..lol

  • still sounds nice

  • my thirteenth birthday.. kick ass. 6 years later i'd discover the band's big pink. listened to it thru a lonely awful college experience

  • Never cared from Robbie's "sound". Sorry I'm not a hater, just think it sounds better without his constant pinch harmonics. Wouldn't have been The Band without him, just not a big fan of his "sound".

  • ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!! Miss ya guys!

  • A fav, I don't listen to often so the edge doesn't dull nor the light dim. thanks for posting.

  • He looks relatively healthy here..What happend to him by 1997.. He looks there like he's barely holding on.... Sad.

  • Oh damn! He makes me CRY!!! RIP DANKO AND MANUEL!!

  • Oh damn! He makes me CRY!!!

  • I was raised on the Band as a kid & still love them today. My dad used to sing me Band & Grateful Dead songs as lullabies, his (accoustic) guitar accompanying him...such great memories. :-)

  • The Band was so Multi-talented on instruments and writing. Voices, OMG! The best!

  • Wow ! someone was in some serious pain when they wrote this but made something beautiful of it. Great song...

  • @CHEEKDAWG I couldn't agree more. I'll go out on a limb here and say this may be the most heartfelt, true, love song ever written.

  • Wow ! someone was in some serious pain when they wrote this but made something beautiful of it. Great song...

  • Garth is brilliant. Really incredible. Such a beautiful player.

  • Ricky was an amazing soulful singer ......

    Levon is incredible .....

Garth is a wizard on the keys ......

  • nice very nice song

  • My Love for you Jamie Sue!!

  • a beautiful, sad love song...........

  • "0" dislikes...your goddamn right.

  • i seen the band for the last time in 1985 at a place called {rocky point park } it was, THE BAND, MAX CREEK, Tom Constanten, but thy were no one there at the park that night only 200 people there to see them it was a sad night , it wasnt like in there hay day wen there was 20,000 people there to see them, but it was a fun night , tom an them did a dark star to blow your mine

  • My wife and I listened to this and sing together! She passed away this past Aug. and it rips my heart apart to listen to it now although I still love it!!

  • still nice

  • lost, never forgotten love.................

  • Saw Rick sing this at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs NY with his acoustic. Parked his old Mercedes out front of the coffeehouse that he drove up from the Catskills a couple of hours south. Been to many many shows over 40 years, it was one of the best!!!!!

  • Of course, that Richard Manuel was pretty special, too. H died about three years after this. To have three singers like that in the same group. Wow.

Great performance by Rick. Love this song.

  • RIP Rick, Richard your voices, music live on eternally, grateful you left this, it reaches my soul

Rick Danko - bass, acoustic guitar, vocals

Levon Helm - drums, mandolin, harmonica, vocals

Richard Manuel - piano, drums, vocals

Garth Hudson - organ, piano, synthesizer, accordion, saxophones

Earl Cate - electric guitar, background vocals

    Ernie Cate - keyboards

Ron Eoff - bass, background vocals

    Terry Cagle - drums

  • The addition of Rick on acoustic guitar here adds a certain earthiness not heard in other versions like Last Waltz etc... This is my favorite and that's why I posted. This entire show has an intimate feel to it. One of the best post Thanksgiving 1976 shows.

  • @Wharfomatic Thanks this is the most awesome song and singing I have ever heard. Listen to it often.

  • @Wharfomatic Thank you so much for posting this. Its my favourite song of all time. You cannot understand what it means to me to have found this performance of it. Thank you so, so much.

Next to Levon, Rick was the best thing about The Band. Phenomenal stuff.

  • I love the raw emotion in his voice!!! Its just the most awesome thing I have ever heard!!!!

  • Unforgetatble!

  • THIS SONG WAS SUNG BY RICK DANDO AN IT WILL NOT GET ANY BETTER BY NO ONE ELSE ONLY THIS MAN COULD SING THIS SONG

  • they're so clean here because on The Last Waltz they were all stoned but still played amazing.

  • Epic..

  • God Bless Rick Danko and the Band.

  • I think his is my favorite voice in history

  • @WROGIE80 for sure...okay, I fell in love with his voice when I was a little girl. I'm 38 now and my love is still as strong.

  • wow these lyrics are very differnt from the Last Waltz version

  • @TheRockMetalDude i'm pretty sure they're the exact same

  • still sounds nice

  • breaks my heart

  • I wish they would release this entire show on DVD. It needs to be put out, it is that good.

  • Remarkable.I never knew they played together after The Last Waltz..Great to see.

  • Remarkable

  • this is totally the best heartbreak song eva ! rip rick! missya

  • danko was the shit... god bless his soul

  • Rick danko you sing with all your heart ! love you so facking much , love the band allways !

  • fuck...... i might cry.

  • Big big fan of the 83 vids both in Japan and Canada. I own this one but have misplaced the DVD for the Canadian date early in the tour. Thanks for posting, the irreplacable Rick Danko is such a pleasure to hear and watch.

  • His voice is so true and touches me right to my soul. This is almost too much.

  • Rick Danco was one of a kind! This song is the most!!!

  • still good

  • Another Magical Combination..Danko has such a beautiful voice..you can feel the soul coming right from inside him........

  • i saw them on this tour,at alumni hall at the univ.of western ontario(where garth went to school)kind of like a homecoming-hudson from london, ontario, manuel from stratford, about 30 mi.away, danko from simcoe, between london and niagara falls, down by lake erie.robertson was part mohawk, from the six nations reserve outside brantford, but he spent most of his chidhood in toronto.the arkansas influence was there even before levon joined up-the rest worked as "the hawks",ronnie hawkin's(from ark.) band.

  • I don't get why The Band accommodated the Cate Brothers as much as they did on this tour. Obviously they needed a new guitar player, and this guy was a pretty good fit - but did they really need to take on the Cate Brothers Band? I know the other drummer is Levon's nephew, but really...did they need him? Or a third keyboard player? Or a second bass player? Who wants to hear this guy play bass instead of Rick? None of the charm of Danko's bass parts. They were way better later with Jim Weider.

  • Comment removed

  • @TeleDuoJet -Do believe that Rick enjoyed and wanted to play more acoustic as he would continue for the rest of his life but personally his bass playing is so singular that, more then the other keyboard or drummer, I was disappointed. Longest sentence of all time!

  • God that guy can sing

  • i think i've watched this video 50,600 times out of the 50,828 total.

  • oh my god. danko was put on the earth to create amazing music.

  • These guys can take from joy to tears in a heartbeat....

  • further

  • Is there anything that Garth Hudson can't do?

  • @misteravocado5 Fly to the moon... oh wait.. check that.

  • @misteravocado5 he can't shave! His beard is the best thing about him!! :)

  • I think they did Fine w/o Robbie.

  • One of the ultimate songs of this band, of any band.

  • I am not even getting into that US bullshit they were THE BAND! Great music great people who cares about who was better-they made great music together

  • I miss Rick this world still needed him in it.

  • song is still good but guiar solos are pitiful and shamefully "freshman", This is where I miss Robertson.

  • @magichounddog robertson did tear a good solo on this..i agree

  • Comment removed

  • sorrowful

  • still sounds good

  • LOVELY SONG

  • The Band was still in near full regalia then. Danko is beginning to look like his brethren Jack Kerouac.

  • "Stampeding cattle they rattle my walls" Always liked that line, seems incongruous, but he makes it work beautifully.

  • Thanks a million for this one Wharfomatic; I've had a boot cassette of this show for years but the quality was poor and I could never find a version of this song that comes close to this performance. Danko's emotion in this song seemed to lift the whole band to a higher plane for the rest of the show.

  • I come from the former GDR and I could see only the film "The Band-Last waltz " after the wall falls. I was so enthusiastic. particularly of Rick Danko. Now I am so sadly, that I could never seen him live. I missed so much in my life. it was a bad policy, which cheated me therefore. i miss Rick Danko and his music. He was one of the best.

  • I call these the reara. the rear era.

  • 10 out of 10 still

  • i enjoyed that

  • RIP RICK [it makes no difference ] Rick you were always the voice for me, so distinctive and amazing. All the way from SCOTLAND UK .Miss you mate

  • RIP RICK all the way from SCOTLAND UK. And as you say [it makes no difference ] you were a voice in a million .

  • I like his voice a lot. It's hard to explain.

  • Arkansan:) I am one.

    LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

  • Great voice and stage precense.

  • makes no difference...good god, look at the man danko...emotions pouring out like some kind of erupting volcano...heart breakin' voice, eyes, stature...ohh hell it's just too much for lassie...such pain, heartache, yearning, longing...what a song...i'm done!

  • Not so much...the majority of the songwriting was by Canadian Robbie Robertson and was influenced by his infatuation with southern American culture. Levon Helm's voice and bluesy-country voice fit Robertson's writing perfectly. The southern US theme, however, was more a byproduct of a Canadian's songwriting. Just an American's perspective, one that can appreciate the perfect mix of wonderful Canadian and US musicians to form a once in a lifetime group.

  • how the hell can he sing like that... haha.. its like... so powerful and so beautiful... god damn i want some more of that one of these days in my life time... if that is at all possible.

  • bolox 4 rainbowed

  • 4rainbowed, I have never heard a bigger load of bolox

  • 4rainbowed, I have never heard a bigger load of bolox.

  • of course Robbie gets credit.

  • is robertson the villan? probably right

  • I don't think you can say one voice is better than another. Most that know best say Richard Manual had the best voice. Helm's voice is raspy and bluesy and Danko's voice is soulful and haunting. Each voice is unique and great in its own right and when you combine the three as many of their songs were designed to do it's pure bliss. They could play something like 18 different instruments between them.

  • still sounds good

  • This song is fucking beautiful... It breaks my heart.

  • @TheOneWhoSings1 this song pulls @ my heart too. The pain in Rick's voice is so real. Beautiful song. i like this version better than The Last Waltz.

  • @TheOneWhoSings1 Yes it is,i've been listening to it quite a bit since my aunt(aka 2nd mother)very recently died of breast cancer at the young age of 64.Though it is,essentially a love song,he is singing of loss and grief( from a broken heart) as well,so I feel it is relevant to what i'm feeling at this moment.

  • Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

What a version of a fabulous song!

I´m touched! (to the bottom of my heart of stone...)

  • Yes, Levon wrote a scathing book when it comes to Robertson, and Helm is so natural to believe.. look at this great horn piece with Garth. Think Robertson wrote this part to the piece? or the many organ parts? Or the drumming sections or sheet music for mandolin songs? I'm sorry, but it shocked me to find Helm poor & returning to farming which he had always despised.

  • Sorry to interject here, but I was just reading that comment. Why is it that everyone hate Robbie Robertson so much? And what was that about Levon working on a farm? Seriously?

  • Reason: the Band had 5 members. Originally, songs were written by both Manuel and Robertson. But Manuel allowed Robertson to take over nearly all of the songwriting. Means the royalties from the song go to him. But if you listen to the music, you find organ parts, drum parts, that Robbie could never have written. Then he insisted on the band breaking up (the others didn't agree). Most ended up as backup players for other people, after 1976. Manuel killed himself. The rest ran out of money,.

  • @4rainbowed I believe it was in Levon's book where he talks about how Rick feels this is one of the reasons Richard had killed himself. That he was such a nice and trusting guy and this was one of those times that killed him because he thought he could trust Robbie.

  • So True maxwellchandler. That book is such a heartbreaking story. The ironic part is that Ronnie Hawkins wanted to fire Robbie at one point because he wasn't that good a player. Levon and the rest took up for the kid and he stayed in the band and he ends up stabbing them in the back with the help of Albert Grossman. To this day he still isn't a musician on par with the rest of them. Ronnie was right!

  • saw the band Live in 1969 at the warehouse in New Orleans. UNREAL!

I think Levon Helm wrote more tunes than he got Credit for. Nothing against Robertson mind you.
