Simply because he wants to protect his ears. All drummers should have ear protection or your ears won't last long. Especailly the ring of snare drum. I heard its frequency is lethal to the ears.

You're right - I always wear plugs. You can get ear plugs that are are really hard to see. They also make hearing the band easier!

Unless you are paying him to play drums on one of your songs that isn't supposed to be busy, there's no such thing as too busy.
