  • thanks mate very helpful

  • I had some fun with this one. I've got one question though. How do I automate an effect that is being sent through a bus?

  • is it possible to this with an audio track

  • is it possible to this with an audio track

  • is this the intro to 'The IT Cowd?'

  • Incredibly helpful.

  • wow, this is great. seriously so great. and i never comment on videos either. thanks so much

  • i have been trying for a while to draw automation in square shapes but logic refuses to have two vertically stacked nodes and it quickly makes a slpe or zig zag with the nodes around it. is there a way to get a defined square shape in the drawing area?

  • Awesomme Ive been trying to figure this out on my own with no luck. How do you do online automation though? that's what I really was hoping to learn.

  • Gracias!!!!

  • im learning loaaaaaaaaads from your video's, thank you mr. ninja

  • Your the perfect Logic master learning so much from you! An inspiration indeed!

  • Im subbing! you helped me out so much!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

  • Thanks Ninja, I'm learning tons from your vids.

  • ....

I have finally found something to do over my holidays....

man I cant wait til my course starts up again next year, thanks heaps man, great tuts and stuff like this'll really help me produce some quality music! THANKS AGAIN!!

  • yeah, you can really do crazy stuff with automation - it' amazing, BUT - how can you deselect for example a cut off after the wanted section? let's say i have a bass track and i want to use a cut off automation for a few bars in the midst of the song. in the moment i activate the automation it effects the whole track, and not just the section i'd like to.

is the a way without copying that section to a new track and do the automation action there?

    thanks in advance!

  • hey man thanks a lot for the video it really helped! i allready suscribed

    saludos

  • thank you very much. It helped me alot dealing with a few issues with automation I didn´t know!

  • Awesome video. I always wondered how trance buildups were created, thanks man.

  • Yoooooo.... very useful... but i would like to know if there is any way to automate the Bypass feature on the plugins... cheers

  • I asked the same question. No answer as yet but I found that the easiest way to get the same effect was to side chain the effect you want to use like he shows late in this example then just adjust the send between fully on or fully off. For e.g I wanted a 1/8th echo effect but only in bursts so I side chained a new channel strip containing echo with 1/8th set in it and then just automated the send to fully on or off bring the echo in or out. Just like turning bypass on or off.

  • You can automate the bypass on a plugin, (it's in the list of automation...) but as thefunkredible said, you should just automate the bus, methinks.

  • @SFLogicNinja Is it possible to copy automation? I made this really hard automation sequence and I wanna copy and paste it

  • @jumba6 watch at 4:10

  • @whotookmypiewtf yup. ty :)

  • Haha lol i didn't realize the headshot was moving until about a minute in!!

  • I think for a wee moment there Ninja your thoughts were on Beth. I hope they werent dirty ones -[-

The trim led thing was very handy. here was I thinking it was just a pretty level indicator. U see, its those little tips that would take a long time to figure out (probably by accident)

  • This video helped my out a lot in my frustration to figger out automation. I'm pretty new at Logic(Tracker user before & Reason) and really love this DAW. In Sweden it's the most used DAW and pretty much standard.

Thanks a lot for your videos.

    A question:

Are you planning to sell your videos on a cd/dvd with better quality?

Can you recommend any other tutorial dvds for Logic Studio?

My goal is to go pro without stepping into som education in school.

  • Many thanks man!

  • WHERE IS PART 2???

  • Brilliant!!!!! been looking for info on automation..... just Brilliant.... love you for putting your time and effort in to all these videos.... LOVE YOU BRO.... all of this makes my logiclearning a lot easyere and.... my wife loves that!! ;-)

so just THANK YOU and please keep on doing what you do...... love from DK. over and out........

  • Oh no! I'm just finishing my composition for my degree and for some reason my automation doesn't want to be altered. When i click on the line to make detailed automation it turns my automation that ive done already into one line. Have i changed my settings without realising? Eeeek.

  • Schweeeet!

  • Thank you very much ;)

  • Hello Nina Dave...... hope i can call you that. I'm having problems with copying the automation. I can select it and move it but i can't copy it.

    Help pllllease!

  • i 2nd this...im havin the same problem...

  • Hold down option and drag it.

You can also copy the region that's being automated, and that will take the automation with it. If you Copy and paste to another track, it will retain its position value, but won't write to where your playhead is. (I'm not a fan of this)

  • thank you! even though i knew how it works, you showed me new things, really useful

  • u are the best of youtube !!!! :D thanks

  • What you meen with commend?

    Apple+C?

  • No no the command button is the apple button.

  • Great Stuff! Keep it up!

  • When you send that channel to the reverb, does it not duplicate the reverb that's playing; the one instance that you have in the ES2 channel and then another which is sent to the reverb channel? How would you effectively crossfade between the two? (So that the original does not overlay the send on the bus).. hope that makes sense :(

  • sorry, I meant duplicate the *sequence* not the reverb..

  • I think, to answer my own question, you make sure the dry setting on your reverb in the aux channel from the bus send is set to 0%

  • awesome...question, reply, ANSWER...all from the same person lol

  • I really loved that! I have wondered a long time how you automate cut off functions and more. Now I know! Thanks man, you're great.

  • how do you get that blue magnifying ring?

  • Great vids, thanks very much.

BTW, where is part two of this vid? want to find out about online automation.

    Thanks again.

  • ur too cool and generous

  • Your the best. Imagine how many future producers will tip their hats in thanks some day...

  • DAVE is the KING OF LOGIC! Thanks for posting awesome tutorials.

  • Congrats Dave... It's all downhill from there..lol.

  • Congratulations Dave. All the best!

  • Dude, your the goodest!

  • First off, thanks for taking the time to do these awesome vids.

I have a question about pitch (I think). Is there a way to ramp a note up or down? For example a string ensamble ramping from a high note down to a low note without distorting the instrument.

    TIA

  • Awesome videos dude, really really nice work!!

A quick question for you man, Im using Reason in logic. Once Ive put a track down in Logic using a Reason instrument, can I automate that track in Logic??? PLease please please tell me I can - I can't bear the thought of having to automate in Reason and then transfer it to Logic's arrange window...

    Thanks dude

  • Thanks a lot man that is really helpfull.

  • thx for this one dude!!!

    grtz from amsterdam

  • Is there a way to automate transposition within a synth/sampler? I have tried and the only way I can get it to recreate the sound I want is with pitch shifter II and touch automation. I am trying to make a rising build up with transposition. Any suggestions? Thanks Ninja.

  • Well, assuming you want a simple pitch bend, you can automate the pitch wheel, but that'll get you an octave at the most. If you also automate the pitch of the sampler in the automation lane, you'll get even more control. It'll sound kinda like a record slowing down....

    *bows*

  • This would be awesome on a Delay plugin. Slowly increase the number of echo repeats on the snare drum. Awesome for IDM drums. Thank you sflogicninja.

  • Once I've set up a bunch of automation lanes, can I mute one (or more) of them to hear what that sounds like?

  • That's an interesting idea.. but I don't think you can.

  • Hmmm..too bad. It seems like that feature would be a no-brainer. Here's another one I haven't been able to figure out:

Can I change the order of automation lanes, like with arrange tracks?

  • Crazy man, keep that up, I am not trying to read that 800 pg manual

  • Hey thanks,

the shortcuts for moving the automation were particularly useful. Looking forward to online automation, was going to read about it in the manual, but maybe i'll wait for your tutorial :P

  • Thanks man!

  • isanybody know how to automate an effects in a auxilliare

  • Yeh thats a point, because you know the previous tutorials on multichannel instruments, well i was wondering, if you have bused various sounds to say 3-4 5-6 etc, how can you automate those?? It seems you can only get hold of those auxilarys in the mixer section not the arrange.

  • Select the aux in the mixer, then go to Options in the mixer and select 'create arrange tracks for selected channel strips'!

    cool huh?

    *bows*

  • ahh sweet, thanks man!!

  • when i hold command it doesnt scale the automation as a whole... when i hit command the cursor turns to a cross..

    any ideas why?

  • heyi have a quick Question how do i get more instruments on logic 8?

  • Handy, great, superthanks for the content, cheers mlg

  • Congratulations, and thank you so much for your help. This subject is uber helpful!

  • Is there a way to get automation information from an audio track (i.e. like an envelope follower)?

  • does it work in audio track or external midi tracks?

  • both!

  • crazy genius!!!! ya my man!

  • Thanx a bunch man.. everytime I think I know a section in Logic pretty well - you always have some extra knowledge levels to add... how cool is that!?

Keep it up and coming - prop's to the Ninja!

    c¨,)

  • Thaaanks, greats videos! Keep up the good work!

  • awsome, same thing as steve said, i use atuomation all the time and never knew about some of the sweet little tricks you jus showed, cool tutorial, nice little nugget of info :-D cheers man. its the little stuff you explain that helps so much!

  • Also, you can use option-control-shift to lasso an area of automation, which creates 4 nodes. grab between the nodes, and drag up and down. Invaluable!

  • hey dave. is it possible to use automation to change the actual plugin or maybe just presets in the plugin, the es2 for example?

  • There is a way to automate 'performances' of the channel strip... It is the entire channel strip setting. You save the channel strip setting to a performance by clicking and holding on the channel strip 'Setting' area, and 'save as performance'. This will give it a program number. You can then create program changes by locating the playhead to an area, and opening the event list, and 'create' a program change. You can also automate any parameter of a plugin.

  • ah brilliant! thanks

im having problems with my performance settings though. im guessing its to do with the program number you mentioned. i use an m-audio axiom 61 (i dont know if your familiar with it) which can store up to twenty presets on the actual keyboard of what midi messages the sliders and knobs send. when i change the preset no matter what preset i change to it will always change the channel strip im currently on to the first channel strip setting in the performance bank. any ideas?

  • if thats abit unclear ill email you and maybe you could understand that a bit better. i was limited to 500 characters so its abit difficult to explain. :)

  • must be the first person in the history of youtube to triple post.... anyway. it doesn't matter. i've found out, i deleted the performance setting on program one (i never used it, just created it whilst exploring logic ages ago) and now my problem is solved! must be something to do with recalling patches on my axiom crossing with something to do with program one. oh well, i know how to avoid it. thanks anyway!

  • Excellent. I've always known about automation and used it loads but I never knew about the SHIFT+CLICK, COMMAND+CLICK and the overal automation level thing. Man, this will save me a LOT of time in the future.

  • As always, clear, informative, fun and useful. Thanks again :)
