  • I though he died at 1:12

  • @Macmillzspitarhyme Maybe!!!!!

  • isn't this a travel? i think in europe/asia, it's considered a travel. you have to put the ball on the ground before you lift up your pivot foot

  • @ltko91 Actually, by rule, the ball needs to be out of your hand before you lift your pivot foot not touch the floor!

  • @Aerochalklate Most all of our offensive videos are specifically for this, so check them out. We seriously have TONS of them ;-)

  • Can you post videos to get rid of nervousness In-Game? Thank you :)

  • @iLoveHer304 we have. Check out our "Mental Game Playlist"

  • How would you avoid this happening to you as a defender? It seems like a lot of people do this to me, and I can't figure out how to pressure them without them getting right by me.

  • @jaythemammoth As a defender you must get off the guy with the ball in order to have time to react. If you do then you may give them and opening to shoot the ball.

  • Nice move but I was wondering how that would not be a travel. I do this move often but I am scared the refs will call a travel if I do the killer first step in games.

  • @mythbloodpk Use it! Is is not often called and will help you with getting past the defender.

  • @ThtDudee718 a good way to attack well is to use effective fakes... if u r a good shooter use a well timed pump fake after a jab step should bring the defense off balance and give u a huge advantage

  • @koolman223 we also have videos on these options. Check 'em out

  • in europe, you call travel for that move.

  • @sexyflode but why? is the rulebook different in europe?

  • Everytime i drive in on someone they use their body and i can never get to the rim, how can i drive in and attack the basket effectively?

  • @ThtDudee718 Keep workijng on the step and add the Hip-to-hip relationship to your drive. If they are getting their body into you then there should be a foul called. Check out our Hip-to-Hip video!

  • hey coach i panic often in games any suggestions?

  • @deathsaurer123 This is fairly common and the result is a fear of "failure." This fear is probably rooted in your not feeling very confident in your self and your skills. It will take some time to become more relaxed as you develop your skill set to a point where you feel confident. No one wants to fail!!!!

  • @ShotScience i guess i will develop my confidence then

  • @deathsaurer123 Hopefully so!!!!

  • Happy Birthday to the best online coach in the world :)

  • @BazhoFromTheHood Hey Bazho, thanks so much for your vote of confidence and the Happy B-Day greetings. Thanks for your support.

  • thank you so much

  • @kobe1357986 You are very welcome!

  • i can to use the long one and one if the defender is next to me but if he is far what i can do ?

  • @kobe1357986 shot it man

  • @kobe1357986 If he is away from you and you have room to shoot a good shot, Let it go!!!! When he closes the space attack him!

  • i think if you go first step and then drible long and your p'bot stay it will not be travel ??

  • @24yujie It will not be a travel!

  • travel????

  • @24yujie Nope!

  • uh... this is clearly a travel.

  • @thegreatyuri Just have to have the ball out of your hands before the pivot foot comes off the floor. We have not seen this called!

  • QUESTION!

i have insane ball handling skills but i don't really know when to use them unless on a fast break. How do you do the dribble attacks when the defense is guarding you?

  • @m3v2p Thats the time that you should use them when the person is defending you. The harder they defend you the easier it will be to beat them.

  • @m3v2p they have ALOT of videos to show u how to do that for example, one of them is called "BREAK THEM ANKLES" wicked crossover dribble. hope this helps :)

  • @sonicskills123 Thanks for your help here.

  • but actually he hasnt released his ball before he changed his pivot foot

  • @dickytam505505 you're really pushing a fine line with this technique, but it's not commonly called. The ball should be coming out of your hand as you pick up your pivot foot. With the slow motion on this video, it looks a little more exaggerated.

  • i always do this move but my friend always calls travel. he told me to dribble first then step. what a dumbass he thinks he knows everything

  • @emotionaL2533 it just has to leave your hands before you pick up your back foot. Don't let others tell you how it is! Take it to 'em!!

  • 1:07 is that a hand check? and not allowed no more?

  • @emotionaL2533 oh nvm it's different xD

  • @emotionaL2533 Okay!

  • @emotionaL2533 Hand checks have never been accepted, just not consistently called by officials.

  • nice effective move! you can actually watch James Harden (Oklahoma City Thunder) use this move off the dribble at 1:01 of this video watch?v=LFEnyiUJQXs

  • @harvath78

This is a killer move and too often offensive players allow the defense to dictate what happens. With this technique the defense is at a disadvantage. No time to step in front for the charge; cannot get a hand on the ball and they are pretty much forced to rotate their bodies to avoid fouling. Chase Curtiss used this as a weapon in getting by players in his college days.

  • whats with the awkward pause at 1:11 lol it somehow cracked me up

  • @Panther016 HaHa! Just an editing glitch! Glad you got laugh on our behalf! :) :)

  • 1:07 travel :S, that's the trouble with that move if you don't execute it properly you'll get a travel called

  • @Pinkusmansito nice eye?

  • coach can you make a video on how to propely execute the euro step and a floater with both hands thanks a million

  • @goldenknicks We will get to these two moves, but not right away. Thanks for your question.

  • TRAVELLING! I PLAY IN EUROPE AND THIS FIRST STEP IS 100% TRAVELLING...

  • @MasterRecordNando: We have exaggerated the elements of this move. By rule, it is not a travel if the ball is out of your dribble hand before the foot leaves the floor. We are emphasizing the high dribble as an important part of the move. In reality, the dribble is not usually this high and so the ball is out of the hand sooner. This is a common move in the U.S. and seldom called for traveling. Extremely effective in getting by the defender.

  • In Europe this is traveling always...

Maybe can be useful on street courts..

  • @Rouziys we've seen it used plenty in international play. If it doesn't work for you, then definitely stick with your tactics! We use this move with great effect here and it is completely legal. Thanks for watching!!

  • @Rouziys: Used universally in the U.S. and almost never called even though the Euro step gets called when it shouldn't. Go figure!!!

  • is it travelling? because the first step is earlier than the first dribble maybe the refs will call on you

  • @kvasquez1992: By rule, the ball only has to be out of your dribble hand before you pick up the foot! It does not have to have hit the floor first.

  • Comment removed

  • but, its like a travel??

  • @tothebeaty0: It is not a travel unless the ball has not been released before the pivot foot leaves the floor.

  • @ballerkg14: We hear this from other Europeans. Not a common call in the NBA, college or High School ranks in the U.S.

  • why is the mag guarding left

  • @crazeyskill: This is merely a demonstration!

  • Is the hammer movement illegal?

  • @35enox: Good question! It hand checking illegal? Well, the defender gets an advantage when they can hand check you on the drive. It is possible to be called for it if you allow the arm to swing back upward above your hip. It sure takes care of the hand checking. Your choice to make. We feel that one injustice deserves and answer!

  • i thikjn this can be called a travel if you don't release the ball fast enuf before your pivot foot lifts off the ground

  • @elhnad: Well work on it and you will be surprised how effective it is and is very seldom called!

  • oops, let me rephrase, he is not really playing off me, he sticks to me all the way to 4~5 steps away from 3 pt line, because i can shoot pretty well.

whenever i get by him hip to hip, the hacking and bumping begins.

can you comment on the elbow part? instead of the hammer, should i just stick my elbow out in a natural way without extending it so if he tries to bump me, he runs into my elbow? i might get an offensive but that will make him think twice before doing it

  • @623baller: Sometimes you need to send a message to those who get away with fouling and no call. The elbow may help in discouraging his aggressiveness. So you might have to take one to get him off you. The Hammer may just be the answer too. Good luck and keep us up to speed on how it is going.

  • he plays me 4~5 steps behind 3 point line because of my range, so it is very rarely that i can get in triple threat position, i have to take him off the dribble for most part. which i did but as soon as we are hip to hip he starts bumping and hacking me and im not getting calls because i dont get off balanced that easily

should i stick my elbows out along with my protective hand? LOL because i hate to flop to get a call and i want to keep him at bay before he thinks about hacking me again

  • @623baller if he's playing off of you, you probably should shoot the ball because he'll begin to respect your range and play you tighter (that is assuming you can hit those shots consistently). Don't worry about triple threat, if you have an opening to the basket, take it. As for him bumping you or handchecking you, take a look at our video on "the Hammer." If you're not getting the call, then that is just the way it is and you should continue strong to the basket.

  • @623baller Generally if the defender is aggressively bumping you on the drive, he's going to over-aggressively contest your lay in, which will lead to a foul and/or an And 1. You have to be tough mentally to take the ball to the hole, so don't let the defense rattle you with physical play. Basketball is a contact sport!

  • i can always get by my defender but sometimes i dont burn them clean, they dont hand check me, but they use their chest to bump me and refs are not calling it, what can i do counter that? please let me know thank you! the defender is bigger than me

  • @623baller: Well, just keep attacking the defender and if you are being bumped by them definitely they are fouling you. If your first step is long they should not be able to get into a charge position. Keep going at them hard and work on getting by them. You may react on occasion to show that there is contact by going down to emphasize their contact. Keep us up to speed on what is happening.

  • i would like a video how to contest a shot properly, i lose to my friends because they shoot 3pointers and i only drive or shoot a mid range jumpshot

  • @Incorepted: We will place this request on our list of things to cover. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • If this isnt a travel in the ncaa is it considered a travel in high school basketball?

  • @imSnuggyyy: This move should work fine for you. Most officials do not pick it up or ignore it because it is really very subtle and not as obvious as it is in our demonstration. You should be good to go and it will make a world of difference for you.

  • i have played basketball pretty much all of my life but everytime i watch one of these videos it makes me go out and work even harder to perfect my form. thank you so much for posting these vids for form perfectionists like myself.

  • @swiffermopninja: Glad we could help. Keep developing that game.

  • this is excellent.....great tutorlege

  • @qtarleton: Thanks for your nice comment. We appreciate your thoughts.

  • What If i don't get so far away from the offence player and I plant my foot beside his pivot foot and in the same time i lead him to the OUT line and + iff i am strong enough not to back down when he starts to "elbow me" then it is very hard for him to pass by me.

  • @Rastibudzilizovni: We need to really know what you are asking here. We do not quite understand where you are going. Try us again.

  • I like the Hammer move

  • @Sethbball14: We do too! When you combine the Long One n One and the Hammer you can usually get by most players.

  • In the philippines they usually call it travel,.. but it works on streetball,...

    nice vid

  • @MrGalactoseify: Thanks! It also works in the U.S. Very seldom called.

  • @ShotScience do you have a video on how to attack a zone defense by just attacking the basket and not using jump shots,..

  • @MrGalactoseify: We do not have such a video. A very effective way to attack the zone defense is to attack the seams with the dribble. The seam is a space between two defensive players. It may not allow you to get to the rack however, because other players may fill the space in front of the basket. In this case make a jump stop and look to toss the ball outside for a shot. When you get the ball inside a defense it usually collapses inside leaving shooters open at the perimeter.

  • @ShotScience hahaha as a slashing guard this is one my top choices,..

thanks for backing me up on that one XDD

  • @MrGalactoseify: Kick some butt! Keep us up to date on your successes!

  • Hello Shot Science, thank you guys for a free lesson her in YT.

I am a freshman coach for upcoming season 2011. Most of your lesson here are currently I use in my daily basis training and it makes me a good player. I don't know how to make my team teach this stuff. Any help how to deal with the team? Thanks a lot.

  • @teamhartwaytigers: Hey Coach, thanks for using our videos for your coaching and teaching. We love to be able to help. Just make sure they work on every BB skill until it changes their game. No easy route to getting them to become better players except yours and their hard work. Go get em!!!

  • Why do i keep on called for traveling, this sucks.Refs always say to me that i made one step then dribble the ball.Maybe in USA refs don't call it but in Europe they call it every time.

  • @Mrcinaable: We are surprised that you are being called for traveling. The rules, even International rules state the ball only has to be out of your hand prior to picking up your pivot foot. Send us a video showing what you are doing and we will try to help out.

  • @Mrcinaable true, in europe they call this a travell every time, i don' know why. A lot of US players that come to europe have a hard time adjusting to the 'euro rules'.

  • @klemengo: Well, there is no doubt that the game is played looser here in some respects than in Europe, however, our experience in watching Euro games is that the officials let the game become very physical. That is a trend here as well. Officiating can differ from different parts of our country as well. We would not let this stop you from using this attack and modifying it to help your game. Thanks for your comment.

  • @ShotScience I'm definitely going to keep working on this move since the move is legal if executed as shown in the video.

BTW, great channel! I love how you pay attention to the details of the game like for example the hammer move, the diamond or the forearm wall shown in the Sealing in te Post video. Thease are thing you don't even notice when watcing the game on tv, but I thik they make all the difference.

Keep up the good work, greetings from Slovenia! :)

  • @klemengo: We are so pleased that you have found our channel so informative and helpful. Please stay tuned for more and please, "Spread the Word." We love Slovenia!

  • @ShotScience I have been trying to get better at basketball recently and to me it looks like you took three steps after the dribble and it looks like travel. And on top of that I have trouble doing right handed layups because I tend to jump off my right foot while doing a layup with my right hand . Can you help? Do you have a video on doing hopstops?

  • @insaneboi12: Well, this is legal footwork. You can find the information on layups in one of our videos. Check it out. We do not believe in hopstops for shooting as this can make you pretty unstable. Sorry.

  • men that is traveling, cause the guy moves his pidot foot. this clip is a crap

  • @oniechiwa: This video illustrates how to beat a defender off the dribble. By rule, the pivot foot can be lifted as soon as the ball leaves the dribble hand. You do not have to wait for the ball to hit the floor. We believe that "No one is forcing you to accept this technique", but merely expressing a way to beat the defender. Very seldom called as a travel. We have used this for a long time and recall very few calls, but then, why accept something that might make you better!!!

  • that's a travel?

  • @GlitchyNigga: Hold on! Only if they call it! We stretch the limits here for e emphasis, but it rarely is called. Give it a shot and it may give you an edge.

  • Can that help me in 5v5 games? cause if I extend the ball much it will get caught very easily

  • @zeruvirix: Well, you have to choose where and when you choose to use this move. If you have enough of an opening to go then you should be ok.

  • Can that hepl me in 5v5 games? cause it does seem like for 1on1

  • @zeruvirix: Use it anytime and in any setting. Go for it. Like other moves, it may not always be there, but don't strap your game. Go for it!

  • in europe refs call traveling for that

  • @mightynorman: Would you let that stop you if you can gain an advantage? We have used a little freedom on the footwork to make a point. Try it and see if they call it. You probably will not be in violation of the rules because you will be more conservative on the footwork. Let us know.

  • @ShotScience

no,i have already got called for traveling for that last year...but since rules have changed in europe this year,i'll give it a try again :)

  • @ShotScience They will call it, when it shows you're having a big advantage over your defender. And it is clear you're having it.

  • @Nightcrawler259 well, if you don't like it, please don't use it. We've never had a problem with it. Chase played for the US National team abroad and used it every time he drove the hoop and most of the other players from ALL the teams did as well. We're here to put forth our basketball philosophy. If it's not your thing, that's cool.

  • WILL U EVER GET CALLED FOR TRAVEL?

  • @portmurphy1: It is possible, but we really don't see often at all. By rule, you can lift your pivot foot as soon as you release the ball from your dribble hand. It doesn't have to be before the ball hits the floor. We, as players and coaches need to look for any way we can to get an edge.

  • i am blessed to have one of the quickest first steps out there. thank u lord

  • @tiyo87: You are truly blessed! Adding this technique should make you even more devastating!!!!

  • this is a very interesting video

  • @TheSamster98: We feel that this skill gives you the advantage over the defender as long as you DO NOT loop around the defender. Go "Hip-to-Hip with them and get fouled or go by them!

  • u need to dribble before lifting your pivot foot so you dont get called for travelling

  • @regang1: Well not exactly! If you check the ruile book it clearly states that the ball must be out of your hand before that foot lits. It does not need to hit the floor first. This is a common misconception about traveling.

  • i love this move but usually i spin and dash through

  • @keefe500: Whatever works for you! Lets just get to the rack!

  • in nba this move is ok. But in Europe you might be called for a travel.

  • @gricius: This is a move that our students all the time. It's really effective and seldom called.

  • i think the dribble is a little bit too high?

  • @MrChenBoWei: We want the dribble a little higher because it allows us extra time to get to the ball.

  • Hey coach, regarding the jab step... Do you have any tips on how to decide which foot (left or right) should be my pivot and which should jab for it to become more effective? I usually jab with my right, but when the defender shifts to his left, I don't have enough speed going to my left. I'm much faster when I go to my right.

  • @MARKSMAN2318: We feel that the jab foot should be your dominant foot. If you are right handed then use the right foot leaving the left as your pivot foot. When you jab make it a short step and then recover that foot. The defender will recover as well, as he is recovering that is the time to go by him with your right foot. If he does not recover then step by him going to your left, seal him and go!.

  • hey coach whats the best way to get your defender to move hard in the direction your moving in ?

  • @pixy4life: We like using the "Jab Step"which we will soon put up. It's a great move if executed properly.

  • It is a travel. If you can do it fast enought and smooth enough... or if your name is Kobe, you won't get called for it.

  • @Jaboie: Its only a travel if they blow their whistle. Most officials do not call it! Go for it!!!!

  • Its a Travel

  • @spicydots: Well, it's only a travel if the whistle is blown. This demonstration is exaggerated some for effect, but it is rarely called. By rule, this is not a travel if the ball has been released by the dribble hand prior to the lifting of the pivot foot. We believe that you look for all things that give you an edge and we have not seen this be called very often. Everyone has choices to make, this is one we believe in.

  • Wont you get called for traveling in this move? around 1:11, the person's foot is already off the floor before dribbling the ball ..

  • @ryandcat Our players have used this at every level, in the US and international play and haven't ever been called on it. It really isn't a travel because the ball just has to leave the hand before your foot pulls up from the floor. For the demonstration of this video we exaggerated it a little bit and added some major slow motion. It works and it's legal!

  • @ShotScience

    ok. thanks :)

  • @ShotScience maybe in US. In Europe this is a travel because the foot goes faster than the ball.

  • @immoren we've had players in the international league use this and they never had a problem. Even Chase played for the US national team and he never was called for using just this move. Both US and International rules state that it isn't a travel as long as the ball LEAVES the hand before the foot is pulled.

  • @ShotScience well i was watching FIBA and US got called for this soo many times

  • @LakersCP3: We missed that!

  • Not suppose to drag your pivot foot before your 1st dribble, before the ball hits the floor other wise it's a travel. Almost all the replays in this video show the guy travels before he makes a move. Illegal 1st step.

  • @ButtZilla1031: No question that we have exaggerated the first step, however, you are incorrect about when they can call a travel. By rule, this is not a travel if the ball has left the hand for the dribble!! BTW, we kind of feel that if this is not called by an official, then why complain. We always look for that little edge to help us defeat the defender. Also, BTW, have only seen this called a VERY FEW times. However, to each his own. We guess you would that you would never use this!

  • @ShotScience Hi, I do use the first step, it is very important to make a drive, must get it right from the start and a fast 1st step. . I understand this call is not often called and hardly ever called in the NBA but as a fundamental guide, I think it would good to show them the correct way as much as possible. . Personally I think you guys are doing a great job showing people basketball tips and awesome work! Keep it up! I am just been a little picky here. :-) . Thanx! . ButtZ =D
  • @ButtZilla1031 we feel that this SHOULD be a fundamental aspect of any player's game. If you're getting called on it, you're probably not performing it correctly. Believe us, we're not big fans of the "stretching of the rules" that the NBA seems to employ. We're very much invested in solid, fundamental basketball and the Long One and One is near the top of our list. To us, this is the correct way to take your first step. Learning another way to do this isn't on our radar!

  • @ButtZilla1031 thanks for watching and analyzing. Hope you understand where we're coming from. It's important to us!

  • @ButtZilla1031

Yeah I understand. Our coach and referees would say dribble the ball first before you make a move, meaning let the ball bounce first before move ur pivot foot off the ground. But then again, else where you might not get tight calls. :)

  • @ButtZilla1031: Basketball and life are all about your choices. Don't be reluctant to take some chances. Without taking chances there may never be a payoff!!!!

    Go for it!!

  • If the step is too long, you loose the powerful push using glutes and quads. It will be necessary to use the weaker hamstring to pull the back foot through. The first step should be on the ball of the foot, not the heal.

  • @login511 an explosive first step has to be long. Short first steps are easily cut off. Have you ever watched Olympic sprinters? Their first step is VERY long and POWERFUL. Your physiology isn't sound and we ALWAYS teach to be on the balls of the foot. Don't know where you got the heal from...

  • video doesnt work.

  • @crooklyn817: Checked it out and the video works fine. Check it again.

  • I like all ur vids shotscience! Im a small forward playing in hong kong and this vid, combined with the hammer and the hip-to-hip have made my drives to the basket unstoppable and feared by everyone else! Thanks a lot for making these tips!

  • @apo9998: Hey apo, we are so pleased for your development of these basketball techniques. You have made our day. Keep up with our videos and please, "Spread the Word."

  • good teaching..

  • @oderfjayson: Let this work for you. If used properly, the defender is at "A REAL DISADVANTAGE". Thanks for your nice comment.

  • Gotta make sure your pivot foot stays on the ground though.

  • @vongi3: By rule, only, until the hand releases the ball.

  • Hey shot science, how do you shoot three pointers?

  • @1992fireflame: Hey asianale, you shoot them just like any other shot. Mechanics are all the same, just need to get your leg power into the shot. Check out our videos for shooting mechanics.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah sorry this definately looks as if he is walking taking a step before he dribbles

  • @B316903: we have exaggerated this some to make a point, however, by rule, the ball only has to have left your hand before the pivot foot leaves the floor. We have seen this called very seldom and it sure gives you an advantage. Give it a try.
