Good information but seriously...I hate when videos waste my time. this 10 min video could have passed the info in about half the time. We do not need to hear you count out your seed potatoes 2+ times
Great video. A quick question, long term how much farming space would you say would be required to sustain one person per year? I don't really have access to farm land but this stuff is of concern to me and I would like to start becoming self sufficient before something goes wrong.
@thatguywiththeegg check out vids on trash can potatoes, there are many, but watch many of them. there is one with a woman that has a small greenhouse and uses like 5 garbage cans and she gets a couple hundred pounds worth.
I saw another video of yours about planting the potato and I wanted to know how to make the seed. I searched for another video and found another from you.
But I have a question: My space is limited, how much space do I need between the seed potatoes? If I plant them in 5gallon buckets for instance, how many can be planted in the same bucked do you think?
Do you mulch them once in a while so the tubers don't get near the son, or do you just cover them with more dirt as the leaves grow. I want to do this in a garbage can. Thanks!
When cutting potatoes you can leave them to dry for 48 hours before planting. Plant at least 4 to 8 inches deep just incase of frosts. I have been growing potatoes for 53 years and it works for me Remember to earth up when plant are about 4 inches high. I plant about 300 tubers per season which gives me about 6 cwt of potatoes That lasts me all Winter. Nothing beats the taste of home grown spuds ( that what we call them in the UK )
@ThereAreNoSides You know what dude. I have been raising potato's for about 60 years and I cut the seed every spring, and I always cut them towards my thumb and have yet to cut myself. I guess if you are a dumb ass you might have a problem. I soak them for about 5 min in a dilute solution of bleach water. That kills bacteria and keeps them from rotting and also keeps blithe and scale from growing on them. All around good video though. You can cut your seed as long as you leave an eye on.
you should be fine but i would take some in just incase. im in a condo so i got a deck, good for carrots and tomatoes. so im more of a beans and rice guy.
depends on your weather and what animals you have around. if you live off these potatoes or ever plan to then just dig up a few for seeds. a few is like atleast 10-20 depending on garden size.
I have just started to grow potatoes in the yard. I cut the larger potatoes I had into smaller chunks like you did but I did not leave them to form another skin for a week, I just put them staight in the ground. I hope they dont rot and die.
got a question. he says to plant with the sprout up, is that with the sprout and potato under the dirt or sprout above dirt and the potato part under? please help..
great video!...gardening is so important this year folks...the banks arent loaning farmers money for fertilizer this spring..imagine the cost of food by fall!
ive planted 30lbs of potatoes for my family of 4....i expect to get about 300 lbs....or so...ive planted in the ground but i have also planted in old tires...i expect to get 60 lbs from 5 cuts of potatoe in the tires...
Instead of lime you can use ashes from your wood stove/fireplace...
bonemeal is available at any garden store that sells rose food....even wallmart carries bonemeal in most locations.
I live in tennessee and my potatoes have been planted for a month...second crop in june
good stuff ty for sharring. potatoes are yum and good for you and so versatile. and means potato dumplings yum =] how about sweet potatoes? are they seeded the same?
Thank you so much! Out of the dozens of videos about planting potatoes his has been the best, most informative one. Way better than the gardening websites even
MokomaSusi (7 months ago) I started to hate potatoes in the army. Potatoes what they made us to eat (every single day) were same what farmers send to pig farms...cheapest stuff in market.
Only we and pigs eated those potatoes.
My Dad(retired army), is the same way with certain beans, but I'll bet he'll eat them again if TSHTF, and there's not much else.
You said peoples potatoes were rotting undergroud and they didnt grow, unless u let them dry, i cut mine like 5 min before i planted them and they grew idk if i got lucky but they are doing very well.
I dont understand how potatoes grow. Now, when you plant it, does it just grow one potato per sprout, or does it grow many? Does the potato have seeds? how do you get more potatoes out of a single potato?
The spuds are "Growths" on the roots, When You plant 1 potatoe... Maybe a half dozen will grow in it's roots. You have to keep covering them with soil as summer progresses. They can't be exposed to sun. They will produce a poison if they are.
I picked up some plain old potatoes about a week or two ago at the grocery store. I read somewhere that potatoes are sprayed with something to inhibit their growth.
So I washed them off and left them sitting out on my counter.
I noticed they sprout faster if they have sunlight hitting them.
I just subscribed to your channel. Looks like good info. The way the economy is going, I think it's important to grow as much of our own food as possible. Do you know how far south you can grow potatoes? I live in stinking hot southern Utah, and assumed that it was too hot to grow them here. But then I saw some seed potatoes for sale in a Walmart here, and thought what the heck, I'm going to try. I ought to be able to grow sweet potatoes, although I will probably have to mailorder them.
do potatoes need alot of sun to grow? last summer i planted some beans in my woods, thats the only place my parents would let me grow em so i just wondered if it would work there in the woods
Have you checked video section in the gardening forum, I posted some pictures and this video there. Cutting the potatoes is exactly what I did. Now I have enough to plant my garden.
When you cut the potato, you only have a couple of days/weeks before it starts to rot. Some of the potatoes I cut 2 days ago already have mold starting to grow on them. So I need to get them in the ground ASAP before the mold takes over the cutting.
Hey Kevin, great videos. I was wondering what the climate's like where you live and how many acres you have. How much of your property have you dedicated to growing?

They are only wrinkly because the sprouts are soaking up the water in them. They are fine to plant.
