The Cybermen are basically the Dr. Who equivalent of the Borg from Star Trek.  I don't think that the Cybermen pull off being scary/powerful/cool quite as well, though.

I have a theory about why cybermen and daleks are less scary or scary in a different way. The Daleks; we have grown up with as a Doctor Who monster and cybermen; are less scary because in a way they are robots and they do what robots do.

Where as the weeping angels in 'blink' are scary because they shouldn't be animate but are. And its the unexpected that causes the human fright reaction.

I think what makes the Cybermen terrifying, is the exact same reason every good Doctor Who monster (like the Daleks especially) is great, is the fact they not only want to remove your emotions, they want you to become like them, a shattered twisted monster and take away everything that makes you human, fantastic, i highly recommend "Spare Parts", a Doctor Who audio featuring the Fifth Doc on Mondas during the genesis of our universes Cybermen

"Yesterday I found an Easter egg (Hidden Feature) on Disc 4 of the Doctor Who Series Three Boxset.

You can access this by going onto Scene Selection from the menu on Disc four. When on scene selection, go all the way to the episode Blink. After that go up from the scene images to the writing which says Blink then simply click on it. The feature is The Doctor Easter Egg scenes from Blink put together as one whole clip."

I did not find this Christmas special to have any of the charm and sparkle that the voyage of the damned had really it all seamed kind of dark more torchwood like then doctor who, especially with the cybershades they acted in the place of the weevils from my point of veawe

Yeah, my biggest problem was that it didn't feel like a Christmas story. It felt more like the Dickens episode, a story that just happened to take place around Christmas.

I actually liked the cybershades, but mostly because I thought they were hilarious more than anything else. Then again, I've always thought the cybermen were more hilarious villains than scary villains, so the cybershades continued on with that trend.

I preferred the older specials but I do love the 'next Doctors' character, the emotion of it all when he re-discovers this past is very moving. Also I love for this one quote:

I agree with you about the cybermen and the cybershades, they never seem to scare me and the cybershades reminded me of monkeys.

Also I didnt really like Morrissey much, and im hoping that he wont be the next doctor. Also it felt like there was somthing missing because Ten didnt have an assistant. It was decent though and as you said it did have alot to live up to!

I thought it was the worst DW Christmas Special so far. Why:

- Morrissey's Doctor was over the top.

- Rosita was unimpressive.

- The Cybershades were pitiable! Obviously fraudulent.

- I despised Jackson Lake's child! He/she just stood around with its mouth hanging open! I thought it just looked lost! It didn't seem to react to the fact that its father had returned or the events surrounding it!

- The whole episode felt rather grounded. Despite the balloon.

- However, the effects were superb.

I've been meaning to snatch up the series four dvds. You're making me want to spend all of my money on them.

The cybershades were sort of dumb. The point of cybermen is to take away the biological elements away, but these things were covered in hair! Meh. Fail.

The episode overall though was great. I tweeted that Doctor Who is like a drug in that it maces you feel a whole bunch of crazy emotions one after the other.

Because the producers have had no effort put into them whatsoever! Look at them; evidently men in black furry costumes, loping along. They just look silly. Besides, Cybermen are supposed to be the result of the subtraction of all biological features, save the brain; the cybershades are covered in hair.

Just finished watching it. Someone uploaded it to YouTube, but it's missing seven minutes in the middle.

I actually really liked this one. It seemed to be focusing more on the Doctor and Jackson Lake than any particular alien menace. I think the Cybermen were more of a Macguffin here.

Having someone who thinks he's the Doctor and acting accordingly is absolutely brilliant.

I can see what you mean by expecting more "space", but I think it's one of my favorite specials.

That being said, I don't like the Cybermen either. Basically I think they're a cop out--I think it's easy to use old monsters like the Cybermen or the Daleks instead of coming up with something new. They're boring at this point. I want something new, and something more disturbing, frankly. I thought the Cybershades were lame, as well. So, what's different between the special edition box set and the normal version? I only got the normal one for Xmas. Your cover is much cooler.

I think, after having something as grand as the Titanic hurtling towards earth, it was necessary to have a smaller, more personal story, because it's impossible to keep making bigger and more epic specials. I liked this one for the exploration of what it means to be the Doctor and lose that identity, as you said, and the line "In the end, I suppose... they break my heart" really broke MY heart. I love seeing his vulnerability. And I liked the humor and the rapport between the characters.

I dunno, my favourite xmas special remains 'The UnQuiet Dead.' but I'm a bit weird that way. I didn't get the Series 4 box set for christmas sadly but thankfully the Monday before christmas I went into Dublin to get a load of Who stuff for myself and I got, The Story of Martha, The New Adventures audiobook set, 3 latest TW books, The Forever Trap on CD (so I have the proper Series 4 intro) + Panini comics Storybook 2009, finishing story of M tonite, will prob post review in response to Kayley

I kinda agree about wat u say about the cybermen, I think they (along with the daleks)r my least favourite creatures. Idk, I think it's something 2 do with the fact tht they hav no emotions, and thus there is no story accept "let's kill everything!"

After a while it just get's repetitive and boring and they're just not scary anymore.

Overall i do think tht Voyage of the Dammed was better, but this years was ok as well- i think you're rite wen u say there wasn't anything tht screamed CHRITMAS

Yay new TARDIStacular video!

I really enjoyed this year's Christmas special. IDK why, but I didn't really like the 3rd special with the Titanic that much, and I thought this one was just a nice, fun story... definitely not on the scale of the first two (which I loved!!!), but good nonetheless.

I really don't like the cybermen as villains either, so I wish that part had been different, but I thought David Tennant and David Morrissey were brilliant. :-D

I think it might be one of thoes things where you have to watch it again in order to fully appreciate it. But I can see what you mean about the Cyber-animal-type-things.
