I just watched THIEF and I don't see what's so phenomenal about the beach scene, but the film overall is really damn fine--it's Michael Mann's RIFFIFI. And the final shootout is gorgeous stuff. Though when Frank started burning out all his businesses, I was actually concerned for the for the people who would suddenly find themselves out of work (the present intruding upon the fictions of the past). I hope Mann returns to form, and sidesteps sophomoric stuff like MIAMI VICE in the future.

Is the DVD in 2.35 or 1.85? On IMDB it says the movie was shot in 1.85, but the DVD info on amazon says 2.35?

2.35 is the director's cut, thats the version that I have, 1.85 is the theater version
