Caught these guys atew RFK. Sundown. Dead closed w/ Morning Dew + Allmans opened w/ Liz Reed. Way mellow. There had just been a break in at WATERGATE that week. So what???
I had been there for two days. I specifically remember hearing this the night we had to walk back to the town of Watkins Glen and then figure out how to get home that morning. But it did make the hike a lot easier! Somehow, in the middle of a gazillion other hitchhikers, we got a ride all the way home!
@severalseasons - prior to the arrest of megaupload's owners it was easy, now i'm not sure. Search for the keywords with google or yahoo - "allman grateful dead watkins glen 1973 soundboard download"
The Music, the atmosphere, was magical. We left before The Allman Brothers Band actually came on. It was raining and we didn't think they were goin to play. Wish i was still there for this fantastic jam. The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead make the magic!
hanks, i long thought that this would only remain as a musical memory. This was my last concert, I didn't think any live music could get better... it was perfectly peaked...thanks again, monty
thanks, i long thought that this would only remain as a musical memory. This was my last concert, I didn't think any live music could get better... it was perfectly peaked
@MrPatrick1412 Yeah--I'll never forget this jam- -it was pretty close to "religious" for me--so glad to hear it--although the Being There was really otherworldly.
Great to hear this again, though I hope it doesn't cause flashbacks too severe. I'll never forget when Robbie Robertson interrupted a seemingly endless drum duet by Butch & Jaimo because he had to catch the last helicopter out but wouldn't leave without playing "Morning Dew" with the Dead and Allmans Butch Trucks was so pissed at Robertson for interrupting that he threw a drumstick at him.
Those were the cosmic days! I sat on the hood of a blue WPLR fm radio station (New Haven, CT) bus right in front of the stage right - the Boy were wide awake AND SMOKIN!!
Are most of the shots from the glen? Duane and pigpen were dead, but the jams look like Saturday night, since we were able to get lose for the Friday and Saturday night jams. Think there were some Wind River Range shots.
@PatrickNM57 - Most of the crowd shots are from the show but i filled in with a lot of other photos from different places and times that fit with either the song theme, the 2 bands or that time period.
F*^KIN' KILLER!!!!! Scottish folk singer Donavan is the original author of this song. The Allman's made the most famous recording. I always thought the Dead should have made it part of their repitaur (couldn't get a spell check for that word. NUTS!). Also wish there was video for this entire show. But beautiful job who ever created this! Thanks!!
The Dead didn't do heroin back in 73. I believe it was 74 or later when Jerry started doing Persian. I read it somewhere that everyone did something different. That's why this jam was so fucked up. And the Dead did acid back then, before they got into heroin.
@writer125 It appears you don't know for sure. Don't say that they were, when you don't really know. I seriously doubt they would do that for a show with 600,000 in attendance. I certainly wouldn't. This is also 1973, which 6 or 7 years after the acid heydays.
Well, that's what the Band decided to do. Get as drunk as possible. And Bill Graham was literally standing behind Rick Danko holding him up. Now while most people wouldn't be able to play while totally drunk, somehow the Band found a way. Acid, coke and alcohol, deadly combination.
My boyfriend was a part of their band.... I love them...he survived Vietnam and loved Greg so much...he loved the whole band... he would cry when he talked about everyone and who he had worked with in the band and the Blues...I love YOU DICKEY!!!!! Happy 65th Birthday coming in the next couple of weeks!!!! I love the band...you're stories...and the Allman Bros. and the real..."The Band"....kisses!!!!!
thanks man i needed this. this will take ya there! happy feet get ready ha ha ! it was once said about the dead, that thier not the best at what they do, they are the only ones who do what they do. well turns out they were the best at what they did.
Whoever the hell diliked this should probably go dig a hole, place there head in it, and fill it in, then wait until they stop breathing. this is amazing.
When I first heard Mountain Jam on 'Eat a Peach', I thought....wow, this is a tune the Dead should be doing. Ha, guess they were a few light years ahead of me. What an incredible jam...thanks so much....have dl'd for future enjoyment. I know a lot of people who going to enjoy this as much as I am.
never will forget this concert, or the walk uphill : ) found myself close enough where everyone looked normal size, first time seeing the G/D Live, turning a 360 to find yourself surrounded by at least 300K black GD tee shirts, aah! lol, funny how through the years i been to at least 25 G/D concerts, never planed or paid, most times working for sound company, But I always felt this sense of being (existence) around this Down to Earth,Sound,Musicians and Loyal Followers, Great Post! TKS
Great video, even though you forgot to mention that the Band was also part of the jam. Great sounding jam. Even though everyone was on something different. The Dead were tripping, the Allman Bros were coked out and the Band was sloshed, literally. Bill Graham was standing behind Danko holding him up by his guitar strap because he was extremely drunk. But somehow it worked.
@writer125 Some of those Mts are NOT around Watkins Glen. I grew up in that area, and WE DID NOT have bare snow capped mts. They were more rooling forrest topped. the song may be from the Jam, but I wasn't allowed to go because I was only 17 and my parents said NO!!!
Cool! I recorded this show off Sirius--it smokes! The interplay between Dickey and Jerry is incredible, especially when Jerry shows how awesome he is by playing exactly like Dickey! They both really shine, I have to give Dickey props too. Great job on this video!!

I believe they posted everything of Watkins Glen(pretty good bootleg),but not as good as this(sound quality-wise).
Their version of Mountain Jam is 18ish minutes

@severalseasons This person posted everything(I believe?), from Watkins Glen, off of a pretty good bootleg.
But: not as good(great!) quality as this...the other version is 18ish minutes .
