Ten years old and hear Mrs. Robinson and am an immediate fan; only get 2 bucks a week for an allowance so spend three weeks waiting to save enough to buy one of their albums. Miserable, suicidal, hating myself, but this song and everything they do is like heaven and a reason to keep living. Paul Simon has written the most beautiful melodies in the world and(as I discovered as I got older) some of the best lyrics.
@chomsky88 - Hello. At one time or another, I think we've all been down in those despair ditches. Music pulled me out more than once, often enough S&G (or one at least). Hubby & I both major fans, so our children have been fortunate enough to hear them frequently. Sorry to say, but so many (not all) of today's "artists" can't hold a candle to these two. Best Wishes & Peace.
@marysueeasteregg - Hello. Yes, fortunately, as I said, "not all" of today's artists lack the ability to produce lovely & meaningful songs. I did check Vienna T. out & her tunes are, indeed, very nice. My children are teens now & they listen to some good contemporary artists like Celtic Thunder, Josh Groban, Coldplay, Jonas Brothers, Michael Buble, Green Day. They also like listening with mom & dad to great 60's/70's Acts. Best Wishes to you. Peace & Love, Bread & Justice to ALL.
Wow... my life is self-destructing, there's a half-drunk bottle of jack daniels in my hand, and i'm thinking about running my car off a cliff... but when i hear this song, all i can do is cry and remember the times of my life -- the beautiful, true times of my life. I must be what i must be and face tomorrow, so i will continue to continue to pretend....
I love the video and lyrics....I have the box set of S&G......I a while back introduced my daughter Emma to CSN&Y and America & Elton John's Yellow Brick Road.....now the legacy continues...I will introduce Emma to what I consider to be one of the most amazing Duo's of all time.....thank you again dear friend for your magical remedies :--)
@xFlatulencex Don't even call them a 'fuckin gay band'. You listen to shitty excuses for metal! @SheekChick LOL when I was preggers - ok, 8 years ago - the only thing that helped with the morning sickness that always decided to strike at 4 am was to walk up and down our long entryway listening to their Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme CD. Well, that and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but that's not really for children :-)
Some years ago I bought the S & G collection from Woolworths. I was shocked how small the archive is compared with George Harrison. But S & G plus their individual greatest hits sit next to my George H. for that is right.
Where has this incredible song BEEN all these years???? I thought i'd heard every S & G song..... but fortunately i was wrong!!! They wrote, performed and recorded SO many great musical treats - i remain in awe of this fabulous pair of superb artists.
This is my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song!!! Im so stoked you posted this up!! WoW!!! These guys had such an incredible vibe working!!! I LOVE YOU TUBE!!!
it's poetry. by the way, lyrics were Paul Simon's not based on Art's anything. That's plainly incorrect. Saw them in 1968 at U of Rochester. Been a fan that has followed them since 1965
that's a good question. it's open to interpretation, here's mine: in the context of lyrics about disillusion flowers stand for something noble, even institution-like. to believe in, yet they can't remain upright (as beliefs should) when confronted by the elements (reality). It's a metaphor for a brave act, but nothing more, just an act. Simon may have never written anything as poetically profound as this. Arguably his best lyric.
....continue to pretend/my life will never end and flowers etc.
To Nick, wherever he may be: Do you remember singing this together on a sunny afternoon in Santa Cruz? Honey, you were the pixie dust of my youth, my own Mr.Tambourine Man.
I'll never understand why you went in the direction you did. Still miss you.
Did Paul write all the songs? I'm young, I don't really know but my mum was a total poo and said "paul wrote the amazing lyrics but art had that amazing voice!" whats the deal?
Yes, all the songs from the Simon & Garfunkel era are Paul's. He then continued to power on through the 70's & 80's solo and gave us more of his greatness, such as in Graceland. He is a legend, a poet, a master guitarist and you just don't get talent like that these days! Art has a lovely voice :)
Just wondering, cause I've never been able to see them perform live, are their voices still good, especially Artie's? Did they sing well together from what you heard?
I heard Artie live this past fall, and he was great in his lower register, but had some troubles with his really high notes he did very well when he was younger. It was either lack or energy, or the drugs in the past messing up his voice.
Last time I saw them was in Chicago, they performed "A Summer Evening" concert at the ballpark. GREAT. Their voices blended like none other. It was a year after their reunion concert in NY's Central Park. Wow, I miss their music.
@66doctor66 You must really know how to enjoy life. I'm 17 and I've listened to them as early as 11 years old and I really want to stay home from school one day and listen to them all day. Beautiful poetic songs. <3

Cielamouroux 2 years ago 7
i agree that's a very pretty song from 'parsley, sage' album...
to be honest, though, the lyrics are very self-consciously poetic and faux-philosophical...it's very 6th formy...
simon is embarrassed by this phase in his writing (although the title song is still a classic, of course)...
on the whole - i think the album is brilliant - but that's speaking as a paul simon devotee...
i'm not surprised that simon dismissed this style of writing...bookends and bridge were FAR more mature...
