One of the most beautiful & heart wrending movies of all times. Even though it was in black & white,I loved how beautiful the Welsh countryside was depicted. I didn't matter to me that all the sets and the scenery was filmed in movie set in the USA. I still love it. They wanted to do it in colour in Wales but WW2 events prevented it & it was done in Malibu Canyon with only one Welsh actor. You can't beat Hollywood !!
The entire cast is brilliant and it is my favorite John Ford directed movie. Yes, it beat out "Citizen Kane" for best picture. As many times as I've seen "Citizen Kane," I've never LOVED it. I LOVE "How Green Is My Valley." Each viewing becomes richer, deeper and more moving.
It is tender & moving scenes like this one, crafted to cinema perfection by the great director John Ford that won "How Green Was My Valley" the Academy Award as Best Picture of 1941 & Ford Best Director at the 1942 awards ceremony. Ford couldn't be there, he was in the Navy in the Pacific, & would soon shoot the Japanese attack on Midway --- the film of which would win him the Oscar for best director of a documentary the following year.
Apparently you find the celebration of a way of life and the mourning of its passing "cheap sentimentality". Many of the rest of us don't feel that way.
I find this film far more deserving of the word "great" than All About Eve, which is essentially nothing more than an epic battle between two gigantic egos, clever but shallow.
Makes me cry every time!! Technically, I am "half" Welsh- my mother moved to England at the age of 7, but spiritually, my God, Wales is home!!! The brave family members both myself and others have lost to these mines and those like them will never be forgotten.
I'm from Christchurch not far from the West Coast they have just a few days past lost 29 very brave miners, a dark day for our country. I've come to watch this to for myself
and hope that the lights still burn for these men as it will in the hearts of their loved ones.
@poshmum I was in the Millennium Stadium on Saturday where a minute's silence was held before the Wales v. New Zealand match for the 29 Pike River miners who died. It was an emotional moment for if there is one country that knows all too well about mining tragedies it is Wales. It was a chance for us to show our support and sympathy for the loved ones of the Pike River miners and I'm glad to say that the silence was observed impeccably.
@moonwitch1981 Beacuse only a true welsh person could love this film singing with a passion and love as you show, there is no one else in this land that can touch us and i am proud to stand along side any true welsh person who appriciates singing of this caliber as we have in wales, one song in this film correct me if i an wrong that i totaly adore is all through the night G B U girl and keep the flag flying.

that Ford was so sentimental--he really milked his movies, sometimes to distraction, but its still sweet.
