That's....you know, even with a relative you've never seen, never knew, merely heard of in hushed conversations over your head, as it were...I have to say that that was a heartfelt, and VERY understandable, 'Bastards'.
what Boris Johnson meant is, that his great-granddad was a person who followed his beliefs and values to the end. and to him personally, it doesn't matter which side he was on, cause he was not part of 'Ataturk cult', or,for that matter, at all familiar with turkish history. what matters to him is: his ancestor was a honest person, who fought for what he believed to the end, fully realizing the consequences.
Boris I will give you this.. He had good intentions, that doesn't mean it was good what he did. You are talking about Diplomacy? Would you talk about diplomacy if London was invaded by Russians? I hate your guts!
I am English but through marraige also have Turkish citizenship. I have read many books on the founding of the Turkish republic and of Ataturk. The story of Ali Kemal, is truly a tragic one and is seen as a silent stain on the character of Ataturk and the Nationlist movement, hence why it is never mentioned !. In fact, most normal Turks do not even know the story of Ali Kemal - of course in history lessons in school not something they want Ataturk to be associated with. Very sad story.
@yeovil50 Dubble standard! In WW2, what did Europe do to those WW2 traitors? They hanged them all. There was no place for diplomacy when you are invaded. he got what he deserved
@erdal0 I am not sure where in my comment I placed critisism whatsoever!. In fact, when I am probably more shocked that Boris Johnson knew absolutely nothing about the story about his Grandfather!. In fact I agree with you, in war there is no diplomacy and no real humanic rules - something we have seen very clearly in the world this week. The silent stain i quoted can be levelled at any government that has been involved in any war or conflict at any point in history.
So the family silver, which the old broad wanted to stay in the family, gets sold for a trip to Australia... Nothing like cashing out on your heritage for a vacation.
