I am a newyorican and even I know that Reggaeton started in Panama with roots from Jamaica.Afro-Panamanians had been performing and recording Spanish-language reggae since the 1970s. Artists such as El General, Chichoman, Nando Boom, Renato, and Black Apache are considered the first raggaeton DJs from Panama. On the contrary, reggaeton blends West-Indian music influences of reggae and dancehall, bomba, plena, salsa, latin pop and bachata as well as hip hop, contemporary R&B, and electronica. By the way in regards to the publicity comment, Panama is the belly button of the world. I've traveled to multiple countries in Latin America and have heard a lot of Panamanian songs. Credit is given when credit is due! PR artists receive good/more publicity because of their talent. On others words, good publicity = good talent. good talent = good publicity.

I partially agree with YoungCeas. But check this out, I'm Boricua and live in Panama and listen to it ALLLLL day. PR reggaeton is by far better. They are signing everyone here and in 90% of the songs these cats are crying about breaking up etc... They do have some good artists with potential, but right now PR is winning. We'll see in 10yrs.

Primero q nada, mas de la mitad de las canciones q pusieron d Panamá de "reggaeton" son un mix con house music, etc... No son ni siquiera reggae en espanol q son dos cosas diferentes. Si van a comparar canciones de reggaeton de verdad, pongan algo que valga la pena si no manténgalo en otro genero de música y entonces estamos hablando. Puerto Rico all the way.

Yo I'm Puerto Rican and Panamanian, but I gotta keep it real. That shit is a tie! I will say this tho. Puerto Rico has an unfair advantage because they have all the publicity in the world when it comes to Reggaeton. Panama has some of THE BEST reggaeton artist and songs, but they don't get the props they deserve because the country is so small and not in the limelight like Puerto Rico is. So Panama is at a disadvantage.
