  • HURR NEEDS MORE BROWN

  • How it's possible for the original version to look crisper than the updated re-release is astounding.

  • @KillEmWithStyle

the new one is in HD so it is better. Though the problem is the colour. Blue drop makes it cripser and cooler while the red in the updated version makes it warm. The effect of the red is to make the film nostalgic. But they should have kept it the same colour used in the original.

  • @441meatloaf No, it isn't better. The excessive gold/yellow color palette and bloom looks terrible in comparison. And HD? Please. You can easily find Ghost in the Shell in 1080p.

  • I made a promise to myself a long time ago that if I had all of J.K Rowling's money, rather than mope about the place being a fucking miserable bitch all the time I'd get a cyborg body.

  • So all 2.0 is less detail and more ambient lighting nonsense?

  • damn what did they do? all the detail in the city-scape has been washed out...

  • the 2.0 is so ugly... They totally ruined the colors. It looks like a fan work.

  • recommend similar animes , no slapstick or kawaii crap

  • @4zion4life

    Try Darker than Black.

  • one of top 10 scenes of history of animations.

one of top 5 anime music.

  • Original version all the way. So cold and amazing. Coupled with this song, this scene is powerful. <3

  • me gusta más la primera versión

  • Really, the original version feels.... clinical, scientific with its contrasts as compared to the soft and much more organic bloom of the 2.0 version.

Also, it loses something without the SCHKCKCKCKCKSHCK snapping of the original credits.

  • i prefer the original version over the 2.0 version, the yellow hue is to much for me, where as the original looks more wire frame & authentic =]

  • i love u for this...

  • I can't get down with 2.0. I know Oshii tried to make it look more like the 2nd film, but this shit is a travesty. I wish the original had a quality bluray release. I'd be less pissed about it.

  • @yagamiraito the original is on 2.0 blu ray disc but doesn't not look good as 2.0 'cause they possibly didn't film print the original on blu ray. Instead they convert a dvd version into a blu ray that render the movie in 1080i which pissed me off. Oshii should of digitally restore the film prints of the original for blu ray release: have the restored original with the same picture and sound quality (1080p & 6.1 surround sounds) as the 2.0 version.

  • @yagamiraito ...and yes i do love 2.0 but i also loved the the original

  • @MartinNBambi What sucks is that a bluray of the original is available in Japan but it sucks. I'd gladly drop the $100 asking price for it if the picture quality and audio were up to par. So far the best quality version of the film is a damn 720p HDTV rip from Japan. Also, why isn't that bluray version of the original available elsewhere? It's not like Manga Ent. couldn't just release it here. It even has subs and the dub on it already.

  • @yagamiraito dude, i bought the blu ray of the 2.0 at best buy (next to Chandler mall) in Arizona back on black friday '09 and in the bonus materials the blu ray of the 2.0 version features an option to play the original but like i said it wasn't as good as the 2.0 version 'cause the highest picture quality and sound for the original was 1080i and 2.0 stereo instead of beautiful 1080p and 6.1 surround sounds. they really need to digitally restore the original for superior picture & sound, u know

  • ...and like i said the original should be in pure 1080p & 6.1 surround sound. anyway if i'm right about the dvd master source of the original GITS being converted into blu ray, then that'll suck. they really need a state of the art restoration work for the orginal to have the original look the way it was the first time it was viewed in theaters and to have a same picture quality and sound as the 2.0 version

  • Hmm, they both look good in their own way... I'm trying to decide which of the two versions I'm gonna re-watch!

  • @182fca I recommend you watching both versions and decide which of the two is good

  • i personally prefer the original since the sephia tone/yellow filter makes it look more like a memory

  • my vision is augmented

  • @n11lc2 I never asked for this

  • heeeh the yellow filter removes all the color, and it has too much bloom.

I also prefer the rough and simple effects from the original movie (down to the letters)

  • original is best, nuff said

  • Wow can it be ? Not flagged for nudity ? Did youtube grew up now ?

  • BLOOM ERRYWHERE

  • i cant help myself, i like the original!

  • the soundtrack still makes my hair stand..one of the best animes i have watched

  • One Long Distance Phone Call...

  • Original version looks much better...sigh...

  • I prefer the old-school one. The new CG dosen't really bring anything new to an already superb movie.

  • Shoji Kawamori did mecha designs for this movie?!? Whoa.

  • I really must say that the old version is just brilliant! But I like the atmosphere in the new version better.

  • Idk the old version looks just as good as the new one. I see no better animation, just different color corrections and bloom effects, absolutely nothing else is better and the CGI scenes in the new one look like a Playstation 1 CGI scene from way back when. Watch the original, SOOOOO much better.

  • Deus ex and the ghost in the shell are my favorite futuristic series ^^ nothing comes close to them.

  • because the fucking Matrix robbery the style of the GiTS and the director wanted to get away from the similarities... fuck you Wachowski !!!!

  • @davidvfx There's a difference between stealing and borrowing/being inspired from.

  • @d00m3d2009 Exactly, and the Wachowski brothers stole, the similarities are far too many to be considered inspiration.

  • @poikilotherm1 Come on now.. And since the Matrix there have been so many live actions movies or video games with bullet time that everyone's stealing from them, amirite? So it all evens out..

  • @d00m3d2009 You guys should read The Invisibles by Grant Morrison. That's what the Wachowski ripped The Matrix off from actually, LOL.

They even used the comic as a shot reference when they filmed it to the point where whole scenes were ripped. After the first film some people called them out on it and that's when they started to change it to avoid a law suit but it also led to the not as good sequels. The Invinsibles is leaps and bounds better than The Matrix as well.

  • @MrDeathRebirth They didn't rip off anything from anyone. They used a lot of anime, manga, comics for inspiration, because they love them so much. Morrison says the Invisibles comic was on set, but Simulacra&Simulation was also given to the crew and the cast was REQUIRED to read it. GitS was shown to the producer and they told him "we want to make this, but into a live action movie". Also search for their own comic book "Ectokid", it resembles the Matrix movies in a lot of ways.

  • @d00m3d2009 Ectokid was based on the creations of Clive Barker though who made the outline premise and main characters.

"In the end, I was glad they got the ideas out but very disappointed that they blew it so badly and distorted all the Gnostic transcendental aspects that made the first film so strong and potent. If they had any sense, they would have befriended me instead of pissing me off. They seem like nice boys." Grant Morrison on the issue.

  • @MrDeathRebirth Entire sequences from Ectokid nevertheless resemble scenes from the Matrix movies that were filmed years later. The sequels were thematically more complex than the first film, so that wasn't the problem. The actual writing, editing etc suffered, but they wouldn't become magically better by using the Invisibles as a template. The ideas of the sequels were still strong. There are dozens of successful stories to "rip off", it's foolish to suggest they depended on it.

  • @MrDeathRebirth It's like saying the existence of the Zion dance scene in the second movie, which is a scene most people found unnecessary and unnecessarily too long, depended on if they used the Invisibles as a template or not. That's just an example of a flaw in the sequels that has nothing to do with their sources of inspiration.

  • @poikilotherm1 What are you talking about? The Wachowski's didn't blatantly steal from GITS, they were inspired by it. In fact they even showed GITS to Warner Bros as a rough idea for the look and feel of the film...

  • @poikilotherm1 actual it was black woman who writen the Matrix they just stole it

  • @davidvfx

Yeah, it looks like they were trying to move away from the original look because Matrix took it from Ghost in the Shell.

  • @davidvfx in the end, the 2.0 version is even more reminiscent of blade runner than the original - i suggest you to get some culture, besides just watching anime.

  • u forgett put the new version song

  • I liked both version for their distinct style. I really appreciate the original very much and I think this new 2.0 version doesn't take anything away from the original. I will just see it as a new perspective and just love each for what they are without having to figure out which is better. Because both are great! :)

  • It's the difference between looking through a green/blue filter and a sepia filter. I like the bloom and softness in the remade one. Though it's not a huge difference in what actually happens between one and the other, the coloring gives it a warmer feel. It changes the atmosphere in my opinion. It's as if there's a slightly more nurturing feel to her creation as opposed to a machine being run through another machine in a dark factory out in the middle of god only knows where. My two cents.

  • いいね!

  • I like them both about as equal as the other, I like the Sharp image of the original and the extra CG effects of the altered 2.0 version,

  • If I recall correct, the Matrix was strongly influenced by Ghost In The Shell. Yet it was the Matrix that got all the fame, not the anime masterpiece. It's a shame, really.

  • The original version looks far better than the update.

  • Left because the colors aren't washed out

  • I refused to pay £20 for 2.0. I find the CGI takes away from what great work went in to making this film.

  • Hey thank you very much for this comparison! Very usefull...

I still like the original titles better, tho... I fail to see what's catchy in the 2.0 version

They even removed the awesome "machine" sound that was playing while composing the titles... I used to love it :)

  • Hmmm, which one will I watch,,, I have no idea

  • i wish id live in a yellow world :(

  • Why they did this cgi shit? First with Evangelion, now with GITS... what's next? AKIRA? They really think they are doing something better instead of just ruining fuckin masterpieces?

  • stupid bitch japanase, they killed this movie with this new effects.

  • I don't mind the new version, although I am sort of leaning towards the original, mainly because I see too much blur in the new one which obscures the details in the animation.

That said, I'll have to watch it on my bluray to see for sure ;)

  • WOuld hvae bought it if they redid the normal handdrawn parts too.

    But color-corection? no.

WOuld love to see it in Full-HD + 3D (ofc with original colorsetting.. was better imo.)

  • 15 years since this show started. 15. Damn.

  • gold and black is the new blue and green.

  • I like the original better. I was originally drawn to anime because of the art. For me, to change the original GITS is like changing the Mona Lisa to be more contemporary.

The newer version might look better to some (ie: those who are easily impressed by shiny things), but I honestly like the original far more.

  • Why change something that is already beyond a masterpiece...?

I definitely prefer the original version to the new.

  • because 2.0 is probably much closer to Oshii's original vision than the 1995 release.

  • I find it strange to see an older animation updated with CGI and "color correction" but I like it. Makes it seem fresh, since the animation is such high quality that you'd hardly guess it's been years.

  • first version is the most impressive.

  • I like both but I'm leaning towards the new version. It looks like they tried to make the hand drawn animation to look more lifelike and realistic as possible rather than just hand drawn. The new is mostly light and shadows while the old is lines, lines, lines. All the rest comes down to: Do you like yellow and orange or green? The green is more Matrix-like, while the technology is advanced but still big and clunky. While the yellow and orange seems more sleek and streamlined. I like the orange.

  • @skevmon To me it's more like gold in the new version. Anyway I'm more likely to watch the new version but i still love both versions since i started watching the old version, u know i mean.

  • This is one of my favourite films and I far prefer the original. It's strange but I like my films to look ruff and my video games to be polished and updated.

  • Original is way better. New one is just new CGI and an orange tint on the original animation.

  • Is it just me or was all they did with 2.0 pretty much only giving it a lighter, more yellow look?

  • @MoaiMaea They color-corrected the movie to give it a yellow look, which is more similar to the look of the sequel, they redid all CGI shots, and they replaced a few scenes with (not that great looking) CGI ones.

  • How very unnecessary.

  • Honestly, I'm usually not that fond of special edition versions of a film, but when it came to this restoration, I must admit that I'm impressed. I even liked the new opening to the film, it was cool as hell.

  • new version sucks.... but new sound effects are good

  • i like blue more than orange

  • i almost prefer the original at times

  • if you grab a crowbar and pop your head out your collective asses for just a seconds you might see that they were trying to add to the power of the movie by making the lighting of the scenes more ambient

at the end of this clip the updated version makes the blackness surrounding here as she wakes up more intense adding to the effect of the film

and the creation process is brightened with added ambiance to make the whole thing more surreal

you people can be without sense or taste at times....

  • It still looks worse in my opinion. Also, don’t be such a smug ... arrogating the right to define who is with sense or taste. Who do you think you are?

RunFasterPussycat, pff. Don’t make me laugh.

  • @MoaiMaea Well well well a snob on the internet Im so shocked....

  • in this case the update is better and i rarely say that.....

  • The new version just ruins the movie.

  • great vid.. really great, took me a few to find but this is EXACTLY what i wanted. and maybe its just me, but i think the matrix effects>new cg.. i also like the brighter seens better and think the new ones are "too" dark.

  • Looks alot like Innocence. No complaints here...

  • @RPD1970 That's true. The director said he color-corrected the picture to make it look more like the sequel's.

  • And less like "the Matrix" which, even though it came out far later, is what people think of when they see that green text. ( IMHO )

I think the original version is better by far.

  • Good comparison. Is there anymore comparisons between the original and 2.0?

  • I might make additional comparisons but it's not that easy because the new version is slightly reedited, which means the various scenes that contain differences don't have the exact same runtime as the scenes from the original.

  • @d00m3d2009 Also was the original movie included in the Blu-Ray version?

  • It was
