  • The choice of "ninety-nine" is the unfortunate result of a literal translation. The test was originally described by a German physician who used the phrase "neun und neunzig" (pronounced [ˈnɔʏnʊntˈnɔʏntsɪç]), which he chose because it contains diphthongs, calculated to cause maximum vibration of the chest. The translation, "ninety-nine", has fewer vowels and is less effective in evoking the phenomenon.[2] Better phrases in English include "toy boat”, "Scooby Doo" & “blue balloons". Wikipedia

  • Thank you for doing this video and sharing knowledge , I have an understanding of what this examination is all about!

  • how about the heart

  • YOU FAILED !!! After you washed your hands you are supposed to use a paper towel to turn off the water. No gloves ?? Where did you do your training at ?

  • @Ginagiovani It's meant to be wrong you daft sod!

  • thanks for posting this video.

  • This was really helpful! Plus ian is cute

  • The British/Irish Resp exam is really different. We're obsessed with signs in the hands :)

  • well done guys

  • "there is no ...... ....... .... barrel chestness" hahahah, reminds me of my own screwups when I first learned physical exam. Funny video, u guys should make more

  • thanks for the comic relief!

  • So many mistakes

  • respiratory system exam starts with upper respiratory tract.

  • why didnt he check for the CO2 flap?

  • Good effort. Techniques are not ideal.

  • Washing your hands is good, but wearing long sleaves and a wrist watch is not good practise today when so many antibiotica resistant strains of bacteria is around.

  • while percussing the back..we should ask the pt to cross his hands on the shoulders...so tat scapules move apart n get more lung area to percuss....

  • Hot

  • its a very helpful video :D u covered almost all aspects thx a lot guys.. been very helpful!

  • u don't have to do all these things on actual exam 2CS. in case if SP comes with lung pathology u can perform some of these examination techniques (but not all of them) after finishing short physical exam.

  • weak, medics do it better.

  • Very good presentation i like it

  • Dude, just remove this crappy video. U performed the test all wrong and in the wrong order too. Go back and learn this stuff all over again because you seem so unsure and aren't convincing at all.

  • Didn't palpate the trachea if it is in the center or not. Didn't auscultate the apex of the heart if it is deviated or not.

  • This is so helpful for a nursing student!! Thank you for posting!!

  • somebody knows if concord is accredited school for respiratory therapy?

  • inspection, percussion.....palpitations heehee

  • At first, comment on absence of pidgeon chest, funnel chest, (pectoris escavatum) barrell chest no evidence of 'pink puffer, or blue bloater' no kyphosis, scoliosis, kyphoscoliosis, lordosis. Palpate trachea and check for tracheal tug.

Brilliant try though and made me laugh.

  • Where did Ian's shirt go at 2:03? He was wearing a white t-shirt under his white coat which he isn't after that point.

  • one good point is that Simon did the diaphramatic excursion test quickly...sometimes people percuss too slowly, forgetting that the patient is holding their breath

  • tut tut to all you wannabe doctors your observation aint that good in the open credit it clearly states its a IMPERFECT resp exam, i would love to know what the laugh was at when he says palpatataion very funny,

  • the laugh at the beginnin makes me laugh too lol nice ! buddie haha

  • I agree with your comment, Piddleton

  • Agreed.

  • he should ask the patient to cross his arms when he is percussing the back. scapula is obstructing it.

  • it is supposed to be palpation and not palpitation.

  • hi

very good exam but no assessment of tracheal tug/deviation or examination in axilla for mid lobes. Also no cough prior to exam to clear lungs

  • Well, for a start, the examiner gives says that the examination order is 1. inspection 2. Percussion 3. Auscultation and 4. Palpation instead of 2. Auscultation and 3. Percussion.

  • well done fellers, covered everything even if it does need practise to be a bit 'slicker'.

it's always hard being 100% serious with your friends though - Im certain they wouldnt be as lax with their patients. People are very quick to criticise

  • I P P A is actually Palpation and then Percusion.

  • hahahahahahahahahha

what is that? he is a farmer not doctor

  • What kind of teacher are you, putting students down, not everyone is perfect. I bet you don't even know how to do properly yourself when you first started. Very rude comment. I am glad you're NOT my instructor.

  • Always wash your hands before making any contact with a patient, including shaking their hands!

  • At the first of the video, Simon is the patient, Ian is the medical student but when Ian asks Simon if he felt any tenderness during palpation, Simon response "No thank you Simon"..

  • I thought it was a porn at first.

  • the 1st examining doctor is cuuuuuuute :):)

i came here thinking i will find how to measure the respiratory rate accurately....can someone guide me to a video that can help??

  • it was confusing how they swiched between the two ppl

  • you should check if the diapghragmatic excursion is symmetric...¡?

  • 太慢

  • 好慢

  • really helps a lot for my practical examination. of course i performed this so many times but, just a visual revise before go the exam hall.

  • the guy with the glasses has got HUUUUUGE nipples!

  • lol u meant palpation as opposed to palpitation :P

  • is this video just a joke or do medical students seriously get to practice their skills on hot guys? holy crap i wanna enter medicine!

  • after seeing this me too!!!!

  • yes that guy is shit hot LMAO

  • please do a cardiac exam as well.

  • hi thanks for posting this good for revision!

we do it in a slighty different order and we get grief for not percussing the apices in the supraclavicular fossa and directly on the clavicle and if we dont listen over the apeces with the bell of the stethescope. also would have looked for central cyanosis of toungue, tracheal deviation, cervial lympadenopathy and a few other general signs. but that was great thanks again!

  • do more medical video's

  • Informative, yet funny. Can you do a cardiac exam demonstration as well?

  • First thought... far too long. We should be able to pull off a good resp exam under OSCE conditions in less than 5 minutes (and look smooth while we're at it!). If anyone wants to post a video response, the filming took less than 2 hrs and editing was done in iMovie in under 1 hr. A digital camera will work fine for the video camera.

  • helpfull...I'll go examine that pulsing shit of mine
