@eminem13001 I have been wrestling since I have been three. And when I was young I didn't win much but last year in eighth hrade I won state in Illinois. All I ask is that you stay with it and keep training cause I'm glad I did and it will definitely pay off. Invade it wondering I won state at 75 pounds for iesa
thats wat i do everyday almost i havent won a match yet but im training hard even when we live wrestle for alittle bit ive won maybe 3 or 4 matches in practice but in tournaments i havent won like michael jordon i must still practice and be positive and win because i get alittle angry when i lose but then i realize how its tough but i still have a chance to get better and i am alittle because im good at getting back on my stomach and i fight to get up the thing is you got to learn new moves 24/7
@TooOld2Troll wow youre a dumbass, i was commenting on how shit was dirty in the 80s and now everyones a lot cleaner...and if you do wrestle on skanky mats shirtless, you will get ringworm...so basically i hope you die of MRCA.
This movie inspired me to do wrestling I found I fucking love the sport I had my first match today for newcomers this kid was atleast 10 lbs over me and i lost 8 to 5 it made me realize i love this sport more than i did before and I want to kick ass my next match so im going to train like lounden for my next tournament
I SWEAR!!! If this was basketball or football it would be 'DA SHIT'! wrestling get's NO FUCKING RESPECT!!!! Ah, fuck the pussy bastards...we know WRESTLERS ARE THE TRUE WARRIORS :)
"No Take down, off the mat"says the ref. Why then is Louden in the down position next? Shute proceeds to drive Louden into the mat from the start position and gets credit for a take down? Who was the choreographer? WHo was the ditor? Wasn't there a wrestling consultant on the set to make sure that the score was kept track of correctly? That's my only complaint to one of my all-time favorite movies. Its been a great resource of motivation for me since 1985!
@CitySkin09 Bad analogy, but I get what you were trying to do. Those characters were different. If you like eighties movie characters, look up Patton Oswalt's tribute to William Zabka
this reminds me of T'ai Chi or other kata of the other Disciplines of the Body and of the Mind. there's a beauty to it if you examine it closely. for wrestling veterans, they know the deal.
@zcolez - Varsity wrestling at Coeur d' Alene High School in north Idaho. (His dad was a nationally ranked Judoka and started him grappling at a young age, though.)
@dgoren1 I agree but this was back in the day wrestling has evolved a lot and back then people didnt know how to stop hip throws as well as they do today.

Just saw this movie on cable the other night after not having seen it in many years. Still an awesome movie. What an incredible scene this is. Louden Swain!!!!
Dude, -look at Thiago Alves fighting at 170 in the UFC. Don't you think a character as disciplined as Shute would be capable of cutting weight the same way? (Their builds are VERY similar.)
@lawrenceofidaho Yeah, I suppose so. I read somewhere that the actor who played Shute was really in the 180lb range. To me, it would've been just as believeable to jump it up about 10lbs and make them both 178LBS instead of 168LBS. Even Matthew Modine doesn't really look 168 in this film because he's tall and big boned.
@lawrenceofidaho right on my man. Look al the whole figgin welter weight division! Hughes, GSP,Alves, Harding. You would swear most of those guys walk around at 200+
@lawrenceofidaho not everyone wants to cut weight- they want a certain level- I can't speak to that, I was always fat, even at my best, but some guys look for the higher competition- if you won state as a junior, where do you go?
@lawrenceofidaho yeah man, He most likely didnt weigh 168 in this movie, but he very well could have been 168lb wrestler. they can cut like crazy. Wrestlers are not to be messed with haha
@lawrenceofidaho —Indeed, @thegorn68 is correct —This movie is a very accurate depiction of freestyle wrestling at the high school level —I wrestled in high school at that weight class (though, I believe when I was wrestling, it was 167 lb division where we were) —and Shute looks just like that weight class —They did a great job with all of the wrestling in this movie...
@lawrenceofidaho The difference is that in HS wrestling you weigh in 1-2 hours before the match. Alves has a whole day (and he still doesn't make weight lol).
@thegorn68 I did shute looked about 5'6 to me. I think he's a bit taller but the actor isn't really that big of a guy. You have to realize on screen people appear much bigger than they really are.
Visionquest is a under the radar type of movie - no one really talks about it - but great storyline, great music and great lines: Anyone who has done HS wrestling or any wrestling knows: it ain't the 6 minutes, it's what happens in those 6 minutes.
@turnbuckletoys I was a crappy wrestler- but I loved those 6 minutes. When that whistle blew, my world contracted immediately into a tiny little space that only two people occupied.
This song and scene remind me sooo much of my days of high school wrestling in the early to mid 90s. The song is by Red Rider - Lunitic Fringe - have it on my IPod and listen to it whenever I work out. This scene brings me back to the butterflies of waiting for the time to tick down on the match before...the anticipation of my match! Those were the days!
i hated cutting weight!!!! I remember having to lose 2 pounds in 4 hrs. And I end butting heads w/ my opponent and getting a gash above my eye...... 8 stitches and I bled like a murder victim!!!lol good times..... It was this song and "eye of the tiger" that were huge when I was wrestling........
I have the website where you can watch this movie for free and in great quality, no joke. send me a message and i will gladly give it to you. vision quest!
Wrestling is the most exhausting sport bar none. My hometown in Minnesota is looking at dropping it, and that would be a shame. You look at the expense of a sport like hockey compared to wrestling and shake your head. Hockey has the favor of the .05% of those who "could" be pro some day! I live in Washington state now; this was set in Spokane, on the other side of the mountains. On the Seattle side of the Cascades, they don't know how to even spell wrestling!
you are absolutely right, wrestling is a great sport and exhausting like no other. That would be horrid because It is still the Oldest Sport from the Olympics. Wrestling is Highly competitive and anyone who participates win or lose .... have my respect.
They went thru Hell tryna prepare for some time on the mat!

I remember this movie. That Shute guy was pretty much a badass. Yep, once you see a guy doing bleachers w/ a huge piece of timber on his shoulders, it's time to move aside.
One of my old high school wrestling coaches is in the crowd during the Schute match and said that the guy that played him wrestled in the 190 lb class. But that's Hollywood.
There is no other sport. I was a 3 sport athlete in high school, fb, wrestling, track. Then played fb in college. I agree & I was a 3 sport HS jock - I played FB frosh year in college (D-line) and the HWT (ended up being a 3 time Div III champion at our college) wanted me to go out for wrestling.
