Ya know, I kind of enjoyed the book. Even if you hate it, it makes you think. But I cannot stand the arrogant bigoted foul-mouthed demon that is Glenn Beck.
Glenn Beck promoting Ayn Rand? He's a crazy Mormon and she was a sociopathic atheist. I've read almost all her published work and loved her novels, but she was bat shit crazy. This film went nowhere. Sucks. The irony is that the film is mainly about Radical Capitalism but the film made only 5 million dollars. Ha ha ha. James Cameron should have directed.
this should have been more of a period piece, too much technology, everything is too clean and nice.. it doesn't have the look of a country collapsing from looting
I much prefer Robert Heinlein's view that he espoused in "Starship Troopers" (ignore the Paul Verhoeven movie - that doesn't touch all of RH's ideas) - that only the civilians who serve their country through conscripted service (whether it be military or equivalent) should be allowed to vote.
@Niven42 If that is Heinlein's view, it's revolting. No one should be conscripted; conscription means that the government owns you. If the state wants soldiers, it should bid for them in the open market just like any other employer.
The biggest fallacy of Ayn Rand's philosophy is that every person is capable of controlling their own destiny, and that "bad things can't happen to good people". Bad things happen to even the best prepared person, and the evidence is around us every day.
Just look at the Rearden Steel sign, it looks a cheap flimsy poster. They made this movie so cheaply and so stupidly. Why did they take such a grand work and reduce it to such a shitty movie? It almost seems like they made it awful on purpose.
Typical neo-conservative they refused to put the money into a project to make a great movie out of a great book. They illustrated the book by there failure to spend the money to do it well.

underwhelming acting by a mediocre cast for a bogus right-wing neo-conservative film adaption of a self-pitying book written by a bitter old mentally deranged hag from russia ... Yeah, I wonder why this movie was a flop, dude.
I have the unabridged audiobook of "Atlas Shrugged." I am afraid to listen to it, because of the preachiness for selfishness that the book is said to be soaked in. Read Whittaker Chambers' famous/infamous review of the book. One man said that Atlas Shrugged is not a book for young people to read, because it supports a weird combination of capitalism and anarchy. I hope I'll be strong enough to get through the LONG book without degenerating my charity for others. What has anyone else heard on it?
@ryanellis000 perhaps you should actually read the book and decide for yourself, rather than having other people decide for you. If you're tired of being told that your life is not your own, and that you must live for the good of your neighbor only, you should probably read Atlas Shrugged.
@TumisHumis You can do more for others by living for yourself than if you sacrificed yourself to others. It takes a little thinking to understand, but its true. Look at Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Those 2 men, working in self-interest, helped more people in the 21st century than every altruist on the planet.
@ryanellis000 The book itself is fantastic. If you understand the message it contains. It makes you want to be a better person and stand up for what you believe to be true. I am not in full agreement with Ayn Rands' philosophy but I do agree with a lot of what she offers in the book itself. I feel everyone should read 'Atlas Shrugged' just to get a glimpse of where we are heading. And where we are now.
@ryanellis000 It's not that bad. There's a famous plot twist about halfway through it, that alone makes the book worth reading, but the first half is very challenging to get through. Ayn takes her time telling the story. At least she understood that "sex sells", and although it is a little dated now, I'll bet that it was somewhat scandalous when it was first written. Her Dagny character certainly was way ahead of her time, and even today, she would epitomize the strong, liberated woman.
@ryanellis000 i'm 17 myself and just finished it so i suppose that makes one of those 'young people' XD although you were right about the capitaliam bit, it's only anarchy in the sense that she doent like a government that can take away anyone's rights or their ability to prosper. dont decide whether or not to read it based on that review because the but isn't just political, but was written to showcase how she believed men should live, what they should value and how they should look at life
And all the citizens in Hylan 's books were volunteers

@Niven42 Like Rand, Heinlein condemned altruism, but he praised generosity. I don't Rand could tell the difference.
