However, such inferences are not through the SCIENTIFIC METHOD but rather through the LEGAL/HISTORICAL METHOD. (Like what a detective, lawyer, or historian uses). Both are very reliable, but you would never say that George Washingon crossed the Delaware as a matter of OBSERVABLE SCIENTIFIC FACT.

What inferences can you make about the rate of deposit of sediment from the polystrate fossilization of a tree that spans 20 rock layers?

Dead trees can stand for well over a hundred years, the first eruption might bury it 10 or 20 feet burying the base thus keeping it from falling over due to rotting of the base and if the tree is only 60 feet, 3 similar eruptions would bury it completely. A succession of mud flows can do this also.

Geologists went looking for evidence of a flood and didn't find any, they found out the earth was millions of years old. 200 years later, nuclear chemists told them it was 4,566 million years old, + or - 2 million years.
