My teachers son is in kenya africa and its so sad he can't get out even to see her for one day! :(((( she said we can write down this song on a pice of paper (like whats it called and how to get on youtube) also we listen to swahili all the time! well not all the time but when we are being good! Plus I stayed in from recess to listen to this and clean up the classroom today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BESST DAY EVER!!! weeell maybe best days ever :3
@3ulls3y3 Yes the tourist say Jambo, with a long aa sound. When I was a kid, the proper way was with a very short a, hardly present. You can tell a mile away.
OK, so once you have learn't all the greetings in Kiswahili you go on to Luo, Kisii, Luhya. and many more tribal languages and their greetings! Just knowing one welcoming word will bring you many friends. Saying good bye is always the hardest !
Habari za jioni, mdogo wangu? Kila kitu njema huko? Means "how are you this evening, little brother? Everything fine there?" Swahili is SUCH a beautiful language. I learnt it before English, although I'm British.... have a look at my short video.
For the love of Jambo. Everything is Jambo. Unless it's Pole Pole (slowly slowly). I love the country but they wonder why there is so much corruption and nothing ever gets done. It's because NO ONE DOES IT. "Hey, Lucas (Jambo Jambo), you turned up two hours late and you're in the wrong place". "Hakuna matata. Pole pole."
@richy902 If you really think everything is Jambo, you failed to break into the inner-culture. To the younger generation, it's Mambo, then Poa, or Fit.
The biggest irony here is we as foreigners go into Kenya and expect them to have all the advances we have in technology, Imperial bastardism (also known as colonization/capitalism) integrated into their tribal lives, and when their results don't measure up to our expectations, we blast them for it? Who the hell made us gods?
@3ULLS3Y3 Jambo, is the tourist way of saying hello, Hu Jambo is the traditional way, to which you would reply Si Jambo.
Mambo however is the younger way of saying How are you? to which the typical answer would be Poa, which means fresh not fit.
To an older person the greeting would be Shikamoo, and the reply would be Marahaba, Shikamoo means I respect you, Marahaba means I accept your respect.
Another greeting amongst young people is Mambo vipi? Intead of just Mambo :)
Agreed. Then, when you give them the leadership they need, they rebel because a few (check your history books, yes, a very few) whites took their power a little too far.
