The first Deutsche Grammophon LP record that I bought in 1966 at the suggestion by a record dealer, containing the best interpretation of BMV 565 that existed. He was right then, and it stands today. The recording was made way back in 1956 on Sept. 17, according to the information on an archives card provided by DG together with the record.
Producer & Recording Supervisor : Dr. Erich Thienhaus.
Walcha touch... is something MAGICAL... I could hear thounds of other version of this Bach music but Helmut covers... are... MAGICALS ;).... UNIQUE...
From a historical point of view, it is interesting to hear this marvellous organ played by Walcha and later, Fernando Germani as it was before the restoration twenty-something years ago, when the 22' principal, acting as a quint, was reinstated, giving great background depth. Piet Kee suggested that the restoration was rather like giving a dignified lady a noble set of new clothes.

Walcha plays the intro to the Fugue a tad bit slower than almost any other organ version, it's a bit more poignant, touching.

Walcha cared about each note. Love his articulation, phrasing andetail.
Was the Principal 22' sounding at unison, ending at Low G, or was it sounding a quint? (meaning it sounded low G on the bottom pedal C)
I was told that someone added pipes to extend the 22' down to C 32'.

sicuramente la migliore esecuzione in assoluto mai suonata da un organista di questo capolavoro del Maestro dei Maestri.
