The Sweet does ABSOLUTELY under NO CIRCUMSTANCES sound like QUEEN. In multiple interviews Freddie Mercury admitted to them being huge musical influences to HIM. I can not stand the fact that Queen became so much more notable and known than the Sweet, considering how they practically tried to steal their sound. The Sweet is so much better anyways though, and I would hate seeing a million people walking around acting like they're Brian Connolly's biggest fan. /end rant
Thanks for the reply Demonhoopa, I agree, those bands you named were all worshipped in the U.S. and I am from the US and love those bands as well, but like someone else here, thornysubject, said, "if they were marketed and managed better" who knows how BIG they could've been?!?!?!? BTW, is your name in reference to how good a basketball player you are? And is that good or bad??!? LOL Take care
These guys were awesome and probably didn't get the respect they deserved because they weren't from the US. They had 4 multi-talented guys, all of whom could sing, and they played well together. Just listen to many of their songs, if there was no video, or if you didn't actually KNOW who was singing, you'd have a hard time telling them apart!! RIP Brian and Mick!!!

@PolarisYeti I agree about them not getting the respect tehy deserved but it wasn't because they were "foreigners". Elton John, Queen and Led Zep were worshipped in the US during this period (not to mention ABBA). For some reason their songs (Ballroom, Fox, Little Willy & Love is like) were more famous here than THEY were. Most people didn't realize those songs were all the same band. I know I didn't when I was a kid. Discovered it in the mid 80's and freaked out on them.
What a great track! I am really getting into the 70s hard rock Sweet. I think the similarities with Queen are a little overdone. They have the harmonies in common and bits of the guitar work, but Sweet have a more basic rock sound whilst Queen played around with more diverse styles and have a very obvious affinity with classical music. The Sweet always got a bum deal because of their association with manufactured pop, but compare this to shit like Cheryl Cole and no contest!
Queen are great, but SWEET are better, the vocal work is very clean, power and fantastic... I think, that Sweet is a great group... I love your music and your fashion.
Sweet rocked the world the world did not listen till 2 of them passed.
They were better live then Queen,Freddie missed notes in Killer Queen.Brian never hit a bum note most of you would never of seen them live you missed out,Great that you`ve discovered them now
Sweet had their own unique sound!!! I have not heard too many bands that can get their pitch ranges so high, There is usually one singer in each band with that talent but you have 3 singers with that unique talent here in this band.
Don't like Queen's songs nor the production on their records. Too bombastic and over the top. I'll take The Sweet over Queen any day of the week. I hope I never have to hear Bohemian Rhapsody again.
One of many good songs on "Off The Record" that never got radio airplay. That's no surprise given the history of radio, but thanks to internet radio you can hear many of these great SWEET songs.
@gwb2012 it's what happen when you crossed the way of the american mid 70s success...it can be excitin' but dangerous.... They probably drive to many long roads in a too short time...
Even though they did fantastic albums with Sweet F.A. Desolation Boulevard, Give Us A Wink, Off the Record etc. But their biggest audience were girls and they couldn't understand the hard rock approach and just wanted the hit singles. That's why Sweet couldn't build a follow with a bigger audience. God bless em' and Lost Angels is and underrated classic.
I grew up on Sweet and in 1977 I became a Queen follower. And I get tired of hearing accusations that Queen ripped of the Sweet sound. I love both bands. But Queen were smarter, more professional and developed a more original sound than Sweet. Queen survived with the times, but Sweet became more of a singles band.
@roddanrocks Maybe but i was never a massive fan of queen mid70s "cabaret" sound bring by Mercury.
I mean in 1974 i think that Sweet were superior ...i own both queen lp of that year and i like them ... but The Sweet Fanny Adams lp is really impressive...and has more "balls out" than '74 Queen... mmmhhh but honestly i recognise that Queen was more diverse in their sounds and has more songwriters ...
In the XXIst century Queen is enoughly popular but not Sweet... it should be more balanced
i had forgotten this song. So good to hear it again. Sweet were my fave glam rock band and they just got better and better and became a real rock band. Brilliant.
Sweet is Sweet. Its as simple as that. They had their own sound from the beginning. I was lucking enough to be around when these songs were brand new. I guess its worth being older now for the privilege.........
It sounds to me like Queen got some ideas from Sweet. It could all just be a coincidence. Agreed, that Queen were probably - technically - better players than Sweet (except for the drummer part of it).
@mrblitz00 Queen followed the footsteps of Sweet and got many ideas from Sweet and took it little further with recording techniques. But they could never reproduce it on stage as Sweet could. There's even a Queen song that is a complete ripoff from Sweet.
@007Cassandra I agree. Queen didn't sound as good live as Sweet. Just curious, which Queen song is a complete ripoff? Don't get me wrong, I've always loved Queen, but I'll take Sweet any day!
@007Cassandra I wanna be committed (Sweet) vs. Stone cold crazy (Queen).
Said by Phil Wainman, Sweets manager/producer at time: And then I played it (Queen) to Sweet, and all Andy could say was, 'Yeah Phil, we're being ripped off.'
I see what You mean. I love Queen as well, especially their earlier albums.
I know Andy spoked to Brian May once and asked him if he liked their hit-single Action because of some similarity in a Queen song. Don't remember which.
Blockbuster and Jean Genie came out at same time and were both ripp offs from another artist at that time. At the moment I don't remember who, but I've heard the original. You can search for it if You are interested.
Difficult to search if you don't know the song or the artist, but I'd be interested in hearing it if you do remember. The Sweet and Bowie were both on RCA and the rumours were that someone from The Sweet heard the Jean Genie riff when Bowie was recording it...might not be true but who knows?
@theplanetking Here it is again :-) It's easy to hear the similarity. Both 'Blockbuster' and 'The Jean Genie' ripped off their riff from The Yardbirds' cover of Bo Diddley's r&b classic 'I'm A Man'. If it's stolen or not who knows, maybe they just had same ideas :-)
I can't understand why this wasn't a no.1! What's wrong / was wrong with the British music industry? These days the worst crap makes millions for talentless performers...what a waste.
Queen were genius material... however, Sweet do it for me more, purely because Brian Connolly is just so much more LOVEABLE! He suffered in life - didn't have everything handed to him. Freddie M was saturated with talent, but he he came from a wealthy background. He said he owed his success to his mother who made him practise the piano every day since he was 7...Brian C discovered he was adopted when he was 18 and this trauma led to his alcoholism and the destruction of himself and Sweet.
Queen and Sweet are both good. -Mick -better drummer than Roger. Freddie-...Best vocalist of all time. Brian May-better guitarist than Andy. John-slightly better than Steve, but Steve could sing. I don't know I still say Queen II is the best album of all time. esp. the black side.
Sweet did do Four ( 4 ) part harmonies and were able to reproduce this live . Queen as great as they were were never able to recreate 3 or 4 part harmonies live even though both Roger and Brian sang .
The Sweets harmonies were far tighter and better than Queens no way ws a queens producer allowed near a sweet session, sweet were a 4 part harmony band while queen were only 2 listen and you will know.
I think this video is one of the BEST hair days for Steve!!! He's awesome, as usual!!!! But, the hair --- OMG ---- he's spot on!!!! I wished I could freeze this moment in time. I will love Steve forever!!!!!
Hey Jackofferlott, been reading your comments and your pretty much dead on. I first was introduced to Sweet in 1976 when I was in grade 7. The music, the production, the arrangements, the musicianship ALL were so so so very far far far ahead of their time. I have never seen Sweet although I see they are touring. They have music that will go down forever in time and most bands now days dont last 3 weeks. Im with ya on your thoughts and comments!! I prefer to just call them Sweet
You make an excellent point and are spot on with your observations. It's truly a pleasure to see that there are people who have class, sophistication, intelligence and taste on youtube. Your breed is rare on youtube. As for refering to them as "The Sweet", it's an old habit of mine. They were still using the article in front of their name until about '74. You are right, though. Their proper name is just plain "Sweet". ;>)
The fact that the Sweet isn't in the RRofH yet somehow the novelty house band of some novelty sex shop (the Sex Pistols) has its own wing shows just how much of a joke Jan Wenner, Rolling Stone and his RRofH truly is. The coolest band during the 70s was the Sweet. IMO, they are the coolest band ever. Nothing exemplifies the true spirit of rock n' roll better than the Sweet. The Arrows, Slade and very few others also capture rock n' roll's bare essence. However, no one comes close to the Sweet!
Not only is it a shame that The Sweet are not in the Rock Hall Of Fame but it's also just as much a joke that Chicago, Badfinger, KISS, ELO, Def Leppard and Boston are not in. But yet Madonna, Run DMC and Johnny Cash are in. What a fucking joke.

Thanks to YouTube !! I can watch a Sweet concert anytime I want!!!!! I can't seem to stop coming back to this video -- I think it's probably one of my favorites!! SO POWERFUL!
I have to wonder == Does Steve ever come into these videos to watch himself back in his Sweet's prime??? If so, Steve's gotta know how much he is LOVED!!! What a SEXY man. What a SEXY voice. OH MY GOD. period. I love you Steve. I wished I could be at your next concert. I'm on the East Coast.
