Man.....this 43 young one stilll gets the shivers from this song, every day I feel garbage-y or desperate about crooked world situations....it gives me energy and hope to do something every day!!!
@VicRattlehead4 Sorry, to me drum has little musical value, except in the background for rythm. In the foreground it just senseless banging. I just find little to no musical value to the toms -- especially the toms.
@brianallancobb What can I say or do about it -- I hate drums. Only jazz and bossa nova understand, it seems to me, that drums should be more in the background. I don't like very much "I can see for miles" presisely because it is so "drum-focused". I know Keith Moon was one of the best, but I still don't find anything musical about drums. Too often the keyboards and base f f ff ff fade away in the background because of the noisy drums. Mitch (jazz drummer) has it right on "Are you experienced?"
I had to go and listen to Are You Experienced. It was good, but would have been better with Keith Moon on drums. :-)
You might not have liked the opening of a Santana concert I attended in 1982. Carlos, the bass, and the keys hit a single chord once and let it sustain for five minutes, while the drums, the timbales, the congas, and the cowbell took over.
@brianallancobb I guess drum solos are ok in a concert, but otherwise I hate them. I can see that great drummers are incredible performers (and I would include Carl Palmer's solo at the Isle of Wight 1970 concert), but most of the time I find that drums spoil songs that would have been great otherwise. An excellent example is Pink Floyd's The Great Gig in the Sky -- remove the bloody banging of the drums and it becomes subliminal.
I heard Blue Rondo a la Turk in a bar in Zurich, Switzerland, of all places. It's a favorite of mine, along with its successor on the Time Out album, "Take Five".
You know, I like all the main theme of Blue Rondo that's in seven, isn't it, but then the best part for me is when they segue into the 4/4 swing stuff, with Desmond's sweet alto...
@brianallancobb You know more than I do about music, but if I remember correctly it's in 9/8 -- whatever that means :) All I know is that it's an unusual tempo (if that's the right word). But I am ignorant of music theory and structure; I can only listen and like or dislike,,,
unbelievably tight drumming - this song blows my mind ! The Who are Gods - Rush and Genesis 'come' from them - Zeppelin wanted to "Be" them - the clash and the jam try to "copy" them - U2 wants to sound like them - Even the Beatles are stunned by the Who - These guys are incomprehensibly Great !!
Happy freedom to all. Freedom does not always come with forced "liberties" it is a constant fight that you should engage until you are even freer than before. great song.
I love The Who, with Tommy being one of my favorite albums from start to finish along with The Who Sell Out. Anyway, when I'm listening to the CD in my car and I'm free comes on, all I tend to think is that George Carlin would be proud. Sacrilegious, yet honest and thoughtful.
I had "the guts to leave the temple!" No problem with me. Whoever wants to enslave anyone is gone wrong from the start. But, in my time, I found what I was looking for in my religion ,not that I like the system around it ,at all! It's FIRST a very personal matter. That is what I think. Let the rest to the others. They are probably right...but in their way. Not neccesarily in mine. Bernard
