How long did it take you to perfect playing with your fingers? i play everyday, for at least an hour at a time if I'm busy, and how long did it take you to play by ear?

I've only played for maybe 1 and a half, to 2 years, so I'm still learning. I can play Fear of the Dark and stuff like that, but with the use of videos and tabs of course lol.

But people play favorites, if you say someone is better than their idol they get upset. The general population has a hard time keeping an open mind with many things, and music is one of them. I have stopped saying some are better than others, and lean more towards saying some are more experienced. Personally though, I think rob here is a sick bassist and i totally agree! \m/_ _\m/

I think he means other people who read your comment. I'm not upset about it (why should I be?), although I disagree. I have been humbled by watching other bass players too many times to think of myself as anything other than a nobody playing in his living room.

When someone tells me something as nice as you do, I just quietly say "thank you" and do not respond. If I disagreed, it would demean your opinion...if I agreed, I would come across as an egotisical dickweed, and neither is my style.

But I had to go to school, and for some reason, none of the people I played with here in Columbus or appreciated my school commitment, so I ended up without a band. A good thing, though, because that is when I got some serious learning done (both bass and my field).

13 is a great age to start. We used to read bios of our favorite musicians in Hit Parade back in the 80's, and all of them started from 13-15 years old. Needless to say, there was a big push for us to get our first guitar/bass/drum kit before we were 15. We wanted to be like our idols.

No need to be sorry....it was a long time ago. Sufficed to say, it is a big reason why I have never considered playing another bass.

As far as three finger playing, I am not exactly an ideal three finger player. I use the minimum fingers possible for the tune, only switching to three for triplets, fast fills, and the like. Iron Maiden is an excellent way to develop three finger playing.

Also, try Primus's "Toys go winding down".
