Here is an explanation of how the US flag and a working gun are very similar. USA and the UK are a special-alliance, they train together, share military intelligence and buy each other's military equipment. (The Harrier is an initially a British design) - so it's not quite just money. However, many believe Britain is fighting with America, to pay back the favour of the USA's help in WWII.
