  • What Janis said was absolutely right. I think Gloria agreed with her

  • Janis Joplin looks like fat Crispin Glover.

  • Janis Joplin killed herself! Just too bad she didn't do it before this interview :-)

  • Why was Janis so famous? She doesn't seem to care about much at all. I don't understand her.

  • janice joplin....she was so rude. ugly and dressed horrible. Swanson was elegant and classy and prettier than Joplin though 2x Joplin's age and still prettier. No surprise Jopin OD'd on drugs. what a mess.

  • I love both Gloria and Janis, but not together in the same show, although this was priceless!

  • she looks good at 71

  • But Gloria wasn't a flapper lol

  • Miss Swanson's memory is faulty. Queen Kelly was shot well before the implementation of the Hays Code.

  • Dick Cavett is now as old as Gloria was in this clip and he still looks wonderful and lives in NYC. Gloria had such an elegant face. Janis looks comfortable in this interview, in others that I have seen she looks nervous.

  • Class is class, and everyone know who represents it in this clip....

  • Am I the only one who sees Janis and Gloria hitting it off famously? Just because they are not all wide smiles and compliments doesn't mean they aren't in sync. They seem stimulated by each other, as they are both out of their own comfort zones.

  • @AdArmand I see the same thing you do. Anyone that is saying Gloria Swanson and Janis Joplin are not getting along fine is frankly creating drama. i love this interview & the input of all three people in it

  • First of all I love what Gloria is wearing, she looks lovely. How she describes this is how they dressed in the 30's, the time she was at the top of her career. I think she is elegant and articulate. I don't care for how Dick Cavett speaks to her, at times poking fun. She was in silent films and when films just began with sound, what a wealth of interesting stories she has. Sadly Janis Joplin would soon be dead from a drug overdose.

  • Gloria my darling, I know I'm a straight girl and you're unfortunately dead, but will you marry me despite all this?

  • So this is Dick Cavett?? What a prick! I cannot imagine why this guy became famous as a host? It seems he makes fun about Gloria all the time and also what an amateur and the audience seem to be a bit high on things. Giggling about things when I cannot seem to find what should be funny.

  • She is 71 here...but looks very healthy for her age.

  • Waow ! Janis and Gloria, two brillants stars, my favourites , both together in the same show ! I think I'm dreaming ! So unique ! Thank's to Dick Cavett ! Who can do that today ?

  • janis joplin was an ill mannered boor.

  • Comment removed

  • Janis you rock! Seriously people step off on dissing her there both great i personally love Janis and her music. Gloria seems great to. Cant hate a cool woman who speaks her mind.

  • GOD LOVE JANICE! Loved that these ladies conversation.

  • sloaches festival of cockhuman

  • Is Janis high ?

  • Class!

  • It was interesting to see how business savvy Gloria Swanson was. Fascinating woman.

  • glorias so classy and janis is adorable and sweet

  • Gloria was so beautiful.

  • Gloria Swanson in this clip is the epitome of class in this video. Janis seemed very disrespectful in this video.

  • GLORIA IS THE BEST

  • Gloria is so cool and classey. I love the one white glove.

  • Janis... Janis... Janis... four decades later, and you are still embarrassing !

  • @1961diaz1 embarrassingly awesome!!!!!!!!

  • a gem for all times

GLORIA WAS THE ORIGINAL LADY GAGA OF FASHION!

  • I don't really get all this talke about "gernation gap". Just an older lady speaking about fashion trends to a younger lady.

Weird obsession talking about the sixties and generation gap.

  • @wonderfulwhippet123 you're an idiot. the 60s destroyed any ideas of heritage as something to be respected, and janis is acting like an ignorant fool here.

  • Gloria was the element of professionalism, Joni was different for the time too, but she paled in comparrison to Gloria's beauty.

  • What an idiot Janis Joplin, there was so much disrespect from young people towards older people in the 60's and 70's and they were all idiots because they either ended up dead without having lived like Janis or ended up old like everybody else. Gloria is a legend, so classy and dignified.

  • Two complete polar opposites,

  • Gloria is class all the way. I loved Janis' singing but obviously whacked and somewhat disrespectful to a legend. Sort of diminishes my respect for her. And Gloria remained calm. the audience is a bunch of losers.

  • @ksteiger I don't think Janis was being disrespectful. Rather, I think she perhaps spoke more than she should have given Gloria Swanson's celebrity; she kept talking when she should have been listening. I don't think Gloria was upset.

  • I thought it was really cool seeing Joplin and Swanson together. Two generations of art, and two very different women, but the same stance on censorship. Thanks for sharing.

  • Gloria is beautiful, wonderful, one-of-a-kind. Joplin could sing, but she looks awful in my opinion.

  • @susannebass She died soon after. Swanson outlived her by 13 years.

  • "get a lift from the people at Pepsi" bahahaaha!!!

  • umm? why did he have to stand up?

  • Janis looks at her feet LOL!

  • Janis was a great singer but always looked unwashed.

  • Goodness Janis is so hammered. Shut up! Obvious lack of knowledge or sobriety on her part.

  • great interview, very rare moment in the life of a silent goddess ! and Janis talking about smoking grass is very funny !

  • shut up Janis, Gloria knows what's goin' down and is a lot more interesting to listen to that that greasy inarticulate woman.

  • Could janis joplin have took anymore downer's before she walked on set!! and MS. Swanson is such a real respectful person. I love her

  • A fascinating clip. I had never seen it before, but Janis Joplin is obviously higher than a kite and borders on being incoherant.

As far as Gloria Swanson, I have seen Queen Kelly or at least what was made of it along with some still photos. She was quite sophisticated and von Stoheim was directing a masterpiece, but one that wouldn't have seen by the public, as Ms. Swanson points out due to the Hays Code.

I also love how she refers to Joseph Kennedy, Teddy's dad, as "the bankers"

  • Ms. Swanson has a starpower that has yet to be surpassed.

  • @ccipollini1984 She's pretty amazing, isn't she!

  • I can't believe Gloria was 73!

  • hm. gloria was never a flapper. anyways, arguing about who's the lady and who isn't, who's this and that, in this situation is pointless. completely pointless. janis ROCKED, she gave more freedom for us to do whatever we want to do, and gloria is a perfect actress, very reasonable lady, and a great woman. they are both AMAZING in everything they did. the 20s and the 70s are two completely different worlds.

  • Back when stars were really stars and had something interesting to say.

  • @FunWithStuttering Well said. I won't listen to any of them today.

  • very good insighht from janis about young people and authority

  • when Gloria came in, she came with a very playful, nice, ironic and even self-mocking attitude, but people in the audience were disrespectful and stupid from the begining, they took her seriously the whole time and didn't even get her subtle jokes...about Janis, her comments were not wrong, but the way she behaved was ridiculous, she showed no respect towards Gloria, there were ways she could have made her point without being rude. this shock of culture though I have to say is very fascinating.

  • Oh God, Swanson was so beautiful. Ever the lady, even in the face of such a rude audience. And I think the way she was dressed was absolutely stunning - if I were able to lead a lifestyle in which I could wear such clothes practically, I really wouldn't hold back. The 30's really were fashion at it's best. She is my role model in life - I hope one day to be as elegant.

  • I had no idea Janis Joplin was so incredibly ridiculous.

  • Haha! Gloria Swanson is 71 and Janis Joplin is 27 in this clip, but Gloria looks 10 times sexier!

  • Miss Swanson was gracious and kind in the midst of ridiculous rudeness. That's the Lady that she was............I really miss such icons.

  • I never liked Janis Joplin's music and now I don't like her as a person

I was never a fan of Gloria Swanson, but I think I'll look at her work again because i like her in this interview

  • you people are horrible. referring to Joplin as the "drug user" or "ugly woman" i can understand if you aren't a fan. But many people are, and you're pulling yourself down to a level in which you deserve to be referred with such insults, have some respect for other people.

  • Gloria Swanson looks and sounds like a young girl who is rather unconvincingly made up to look like an older lady in this...

  • @LucaEisenstein She looks stunning for someone in her 70s doesnt she. Pre plastic fantastic quick fixes. Incredible woman.

  • I used to like Janis Joplin until now...

  • Janis Joplin and Gloria Swanson on same stage that cool

  • Mrs Swanson lived 84 years.

The ugly, stupid, hippie killed himself with drug

only two moth after this show,at 27.

  • 2 cultures collide in this interview!!! an amazing meeting caught on television before the guests were only selling records or appearing in movies!!!

  • When Swanson was growing up, women were still wearing corsets and morality was tightly enforced. To her, risque films or clothing was something to be noticed and proud of. But to Joplin and the other people in the adience, sexual and personal freedom on Swanson's terms was taken for granted.

  • I can't believe how disrespectful everyone one is to her! She wanted to show the style of the '20s and they all laugh at her. This is a Hollywood Legend people! When she's talking, Janis cuts her off and they all clap for the drug user! I would have been so annoyed if I was Ms. Swanson.......

  • @MissColorMeClassic i agree.

  • This is a very intriguing interview reflecting the change in culture, generation, and artistic voice. And the film history and insight from Gloria Swanson is just delicious. Thank you for posting this. Is the full interview available to be watched?

  • I thought it was annoying that people in the crowd were laughing when nothing funny was being said. That usually indicates that there laughing at someone when that happens. I do not know what was going behind the scenes.

  • lies, lies, lies, yeah.. lol .janis was patronizering her dude.she just insulted her-- r u deaf? she said she didnt liked her dress and said it wasnt flattering. who is she? janis looks likes hell.

  • and dick cavett should hung by his ears for putting these two celebrities together. totally distasteful

  • janis joplin died right soon after right? good.

  • @hisluckienstar614 Good? What are you a sick jerkoff? Janis was not in anyway disrespectful to Miss Swanson. Gloria Swanson was an elegant, seemingly very kind and thoughtful Lady. What is this good crap? Did I misunderstand your meaning?

  • Right Janis. You're so cool. Defend doing drugs. And who ended up dead of a heroin dose? OOPS!

  • Comment removed

  • Gloria was class all the way. Janis Joplin was a stoned idiot.

  • @monsterbob I do not get this anti Janis attitude. Oh I get it. You're probably a Thompson Twin fan or some other bad eighties music band? Janis was a very respected blues rock singer. Her work with Big Brother and subsequent work was wonderful. Gloria Swanson was great also. It's a big world pal. Many kinds of people and there was room for Janis and Gloria both!

  • Comment removed

  • The microphone... oops!

  • I like both women very much, but what Janis doesn't seem to realize is that without the fashions of the 20's, there wouldn't be any fashions of the 60's.

  • watch the 3 clips of this entire episode and carefully watch the way thier knees and legs are crossed and recrossed...interesting the dynamics of such 3 different people

  • Holy Underwear, Batman! What an amazing clip from the 70's! Had NO idea Janis Joplin had ever shared the same the same stage with silent movie icon Gloria Swanson! Ms Swanson looks amazing for her age...I've read a lot about her (including her autobiography) & she was into health foods WAY before it was "the thing". Sad that she was never given a role as good as Norma Desmond after making "Sunset Blvd". THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us. You've made my day

  • Yes, there's a story that one day Ms Swanson was in a grocery store in LA and some woman was reaching for a bag of sugar. Gloria Swanson said to her, "Don't touch that stuff, sweetheart, it'll kill you." She was quite the health food nut.

  • I like that GS made the effort to dress up in a 1930's theme. Looks nice. the 70's style was so ugly, polyester pants and wide lapels that EVERYBODY wore.

You can just see how troubled JJ is by looking at her, feel sorry for her. she didn't outlast the year unfortunately.

  • Gloria was Beautiful.

  • you are so right! ))

  • God, I hope I look that good in my 70's

  • "I certainly DID!" 6.43- LOVE the way she says that. Great character...

  • Gloria was nuts and I loved her!

  • Oh what i would give to have been able to meet this lady and listen to all her stories

  • WTF is going on with the audience. They keep laughing. Very disrespectfull.

  • THe crowd is the untruth.

Now you're gonna have to re-read whatever you wrote 3 months ago...

  • @zaklamp24 I don't think they were laughing at her.

  • @zaklamp24 It's really too bad. But by this time people weren't interested in old silent movie stars. A lot of the audience probably just saw her as an old woman telling stories about things that happened long ago that nobody cared about anymore; like the whole thing about "Queen Kelly." Few of them knew, probably, that this was one the greatest actresses of all time.

  • His name is spelled Desi Arnaz.

  • Gloria had Classic Features!

  • she certainly did :)

  • JFK's father had a torrid affair for years with Swanson. Rose Kennedy had to weather a lot of gossip during that time. She showed class during this sad time in her life.

  • I think Janis and Gloria actually have a nice little rapport. There's like a playfulness between them. Gloria's sense of humour is subtle.

  • ......gloria very charming in every way...!

  • The audience doesn't seem to be respectful towards Gloria Swanson, Janis either. They seem to make fun of her...

  • DUH! They didn't get it!

  • I love Gloria. They don't make em like this anymore...

  • I was watching a clip with GS and Dezi Arnez from about 1947 the other day and it had a scene where she and her husband in the picture are on a cruise liner gym. I was amazed at what she was doing. Tumbles, cartwheels, and that thing with the two bands from the ceiling that people in gymnastics do. I guess jane Fonda wsen't the first person to bring finess to Hollywood.

  • Janis was dead 2 months and one day later...I never realized how articulate Gloria Swanson was...look at her at 70! Janis 27/Gloria 70+, and Gloria looks amazing. She even has legs like a kid!

  • Oh dear, Gloria has power. The audience hates her and she does not flinch for a moment. But I like her!

  • I don't think the audience hates her at all.

  • @diddeliduddi-- youre right. shse didnt care what anyone thought. she was gloria swanson!

  • Man was Swanson hitting the tanning salon? Look at her. Bronzed out! Nice.

  • The male version would be Jimi Hendrix and Buster Keaton.

  • ..or maybe Hendrix and Harold Lloyd (Keaton wrecked himself with booze)

  • Christ why put that filthy ugly turd Joplin on the same stage as this gorgeous woman??

  • Janis had to put up with so many people like you, and so many remarks like yours, that it's no wonder she took drugs. Where is your heart. Please post your picture and life story here so that others like yourself can begin to shred you--- since you clearly haven't experienced it from the receiving end.

  • I'm gonna knock your teeth out.

  • I like Janis Joplin very much. And I love Gloria Swanson too. Its clear they don't speak the identical lingo but it's alot of charisma in one space that's for sure. Gloria has huge eyes and is very pretty. Her legs are incredible. Janis makes perfect sense and it couldn't have been easy to be in her shoes and live her life with her sensitive nature.

  • I know. It shouldn't be one vs. the other. They're both special in they're own way..

  • Gloria Swanson was such a beautiful woman - when was made this show she had just 71 (!) years - and in this era still not was Botox and silicon and beauty-operations! What a glamour she had!

So sad about Janis Joplin - she looked just much destroyed by heroin - and I read this one comment here she died a few later this interview...

  • That's elegant! So sweet and sexy. I like that style.

  • the styles in the 20`s and 30`s were so elegant

  • What's the problem could anybody translate me?

  • Gloria won this battle. Janis came off really bad in this.

  • I miss the 60s and 70s..and even the 80s..when alot of these legends from the 19-teens and 20s and 30s were still around..and you could chance to bask in the glow of a REAL star!.and hear some stories..Gloria always amazed me when she'd turn up on TV,like the Carol Burnett show, still brimming with youth and vigor..still doing her Charlie Chaplin immitation :o)

Poor Janis would die of a heroin overdose and booze just a little over month after this Cavett interview!

  • I LOVE how she compares the '60s and '70s to the '20s. It bugs me whenever anyone gets all mushy over "the good old days" and then goes on to say that people have no morals anymore and everywhere you look something ribald is being thrown in your face...well, there was plenty that was considered ribald in the '60s and '70s, and before that the '20s, and even before that too, I'm sure. So, see, people? This is not a new thing!

  • always great to see Gloria Swanson, and in color, makes it even better!

  • Gloria Swanson and Janis Joplin on the same stage!! Wow.

  • This is a STAR

  • Janis Joplin and Gloria Swanson displayed quite a bit of arrogance in this interview but one can't help loving them both - Swanson for her glamor and youthful folly and Joplin for her strength and devotion to what is real and kind. I dont encourage the atmosphere of competition the two women are creating, but who is the wiser one here?

  • Gloria Swanson is very seductive. It's a shame that she wouldn't work with Erich von Stroheim and create a movie that wouldn't be popular and would resist censorship. She went along with the racism of the time: "It was a dance hall with a mixture of a lot of different races.....and it was obviously, and uh.....people knew about it, naturally knew that this was wrong ." She was the producer of the film and the power was in her hands - an opportunity missed.

  • who the hell is janis joplin? ...

    All hail Gloria Swanson!

  • Joplin was blessed with genius.

  • GGILF!

  • I gave 5 stars only for a fact that Gloria is worth a million stars. I have come to love her as an actress and as a person whom I respect a lot. I am just about to finish her autobiography. First Class actress, first class Lady.

  • Janis Joplin was so rude to Gloria, patronising and poking fund at her. Gloria dealt with her quite brilliantly. What a star!

  • nah, the conversation between janis and gloria would be far more interesting than between dick and gloria. i'd rather watch two outrageous strong willed creative women who both go beyond the bounds of their generations discuss the limitations set upon them than watch dick cavet ask gloria if her script changed when she got on the set

  • Janis Joplin needs to shut the hell up and let Gloria Swanson share her wonderful stories. It irks me.

  • Oh yes, and my God is she beautiful. This is the very definition of stunning.

  • I don't think it would have mattered if she had shared the stage with Charles Manson. There were very few of her contemporaries that Gloria Swanson could not eclipse. I am only grateful for one thing, that she did not pass on before the age of the silents was over. Her voice, her method of speaking and her vocal acting were not something I would have wanted to miss. Every inch a lady and pure Hollywood glamour the way it was meant to be. There will never be anyone like her.

  • It should have been Dick Cavett and Miss Swanson alone. Too many didn't understand the presence of a Lady on the stage. Wow, I wish that I could have talked to that great lady....she is sorely missed. Grace and beauty.

  • retarded audience

  • Its sad most the old films are lost.

  • I'm one of the youngsters who loves old pictures. I'm 24 and I just can't get enough of Gloria Swanson. Sunset Boulevard started it all for me. Thanks be also to Billy Wilder for that. I love seeing Hollywood from Gloria's point of view, as well as those time periods she lived in and saw firsthand. I wish she wasn't dead so I could at least write her a fan letter telling her all of this. Oh well, maybe if she's "up there on a cloud" she'll find out somehow. Heh.

  • I am too. I'm 26 and have been a devotee of old stars since I was 16....

  • hunni im 21! i fell in love with gloria when i saw sunset boulevarde on tv wen i was about 15! shes an absolute star!!! i would have LOVED to be alive in the 1920s when film stars were really glamorous!! 'they didnt need words they had faces!!!' xxxx

  • Two legends, wow! Dick Cavett is the only talk show host that doesn't annoy me. Thanks for the up...

  • I agree...this was the horrid transition from the gracious days of Americana Wholesomeness to the decadent 70's. Unfortunately, the pendulum has NOT turned back, but swung out even further to where half of my student's moms are NOT June Cleaver, but METH FIENDS. God help us! Thanks Jimmy for your comment! ~ Cata

  • Agree

  • that gives me the shudders as well...what a loss.

  • i love Swanson Thank you for this video

  • i like her too. i wonder why she wanted joe kennedy tho
