@mwduck you mean 'Stephen', right? no need to answer, I was merely pointing out that the guy in charge was in such a hurry to put this up he spelled one of the stars' names wrong. And that is why people buy more Toyotas than Fords.
I just went to a show with my young adult "kids" and we all loved the music together - something that was not happening in the 60s and 70s. The music was popular - played on Vancouver Radio The Peak 100.1 FM and very compatible with CSNY. Check out Good For Grapes, Washboard Union and Matinee!
I will never forget this playing loud in the garage as my dad and I would do landscape. I hated it when I was young, but I love it the more I hear it.
I wish you a really happy 70th birthday, Mr. Graham Nash. Thank you for sharing your music with the world, and thank you (and of course David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young) for giving me energy in my life! You are, and will always, stay in a special place of my heart.
~~I was coming back home and had the Radio on 96.9 FM the Eagle Station and Whala~in Grattide, in Peace with Love, Joy and Compassion~~Thank you so much for posting this ~
I am 17 years old. Growing up in a generation where main stream music glorifies sex, money and violence, it amazes me how many people listen to that garbage when they have nothing to relate to. When I listen to the counter culture music such as CSNY and The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, I realize how much I can relate to the issues that they talk about. I sometimes wish I grew up in the 70s.
@Isstepbros15 main stream definitely hits rock bottom these days. unfortunately the good bands get little recognition. there definitely needs to be a musical revolution!!!
@Isstepbros15 That being said, as one who came of age during the 70's, it grieves me to see how many of my generation have sold themselves out for the very money and violence you mentioned. It's in your generation's hands now. Don't mess it up. Peace...
These guys from the "War Baby"generation did us proud. I have heard many bands try to copy the way CSN&Y did this and few were even close. That steel guitar player puts this tune out of the reach of many that try to copy what they did. It took 800 studio hours to record Deja vu. It was a master piece like the Eagle's Desperado and the Beatles Sargent Pepper and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. A once in a lifetime work of art. Thanks for making our life better with your songs.
Flying down old country roads, windows down, this song cranked. I may not show it dad, and you may not either, tough as nails I grew up and Im more like you than you think, I know you love me, and I love you too. This brings back dang good memories. CSNY <3
This is pretty much about how the kids of the '60's were going to have to live up to the expectations that they made for the next generation. Have they done it?
I don't think I need wikipedia, nor do I need to be 60 years old, to know the history of CSN&Y. Stills and Young were both in Buffalo Springfield together. Nash was in the Hollies, and Crosby was in the Byrds. CS&N released an album, and Young joined the group afterward. Am I missing something here?
I was speaking of the group change, in band member change & appear at different times - I'm a 60 yr old music fan so I was there - again speaking in a broad scope!
Jerry Garcia was so fine on that Steel Gutiar. this is a statement on how the kids of the '60's were now becoming Parents. the message was "how are you going to practice what you preach to the kids after that" The rest is history.
Hey you! No I'm not mean. Early days yet. Things will improve. Its awkward right now but she knows you love her. You have to ride the storm. She's a strong girl, she'll make it.
Actually, now that I think about it, Fleet Foxes really aren't even comparable with CSNY. CSNY are more rooted in the blues and country, while Fleet Foxes are, if anything, more similar to Simon and Garfunkel or some other Greenwich Village folk act.
I think a lot of this song's meaning is about communication. If you have that open communication with your children (and not do as I say not as I do) it makes your relationship with them so much easier. They also learn from what they see though, so think twice.
CSNY one of the best ! I never tire of them and their music is so uplifting...from a 70's love child...our music from our generation of Joplin, Zep, Santana, Hendrix, Stones and Beatles etc. was and still is the best !
@serenitygal1951 Way to go serenitygal. I was raised since the '50s listening to hank Williams Jr.'s Dad, and all of Jerry Lewis, Elvis Presley, and so on. Great music, but the Beatles were more of a progressive band, but individually, they were talented.
@originalpauper Hey, no offense meant. I love CSNY and Jerry equally. My pun perhaps fell flat because my allusion was too obscure. What I meant was the Jerry stole our hearts with his guitar playing.
This song appeals more to the mature-reflective-discerning-sensitive audience who haven't grown up with the internet, so lets say not as familiar with the facility that is youtube. Can I predict that when the younger generation's tire of the prevailing music trends, there will be a search for meaningful songs like this (and others) which have built in qualities to stand the test of time. Then you will see the hit numbers exceed all expectations.
@AlphonsePotter Thats a great story. My mom died in January too but I am 58 not 18. It is an idea out of a more optimistic time when we thought we could change the world. I hear it today and wonder what happened.
@bstarzewski I understand that this song came out of the 60s "a more optimistic time"...but I'm listening to it and thinking of my 64 year old dad and my 2 year old daughter...and I feel the optimism inside me. Maybe it isn't as strongly a movement right now, but I just want to say that the lyrics still ring true. Love you dad and baby girl!!!
@rebeccalforbes You have to understand the times. There was a lot of talk about "the generation gap" between our depression and WW II era parents and us who saw things like the Viet Nam war in very different contexts. Its a call to our parents and to ourselves that maybe we really did want the same things. "They seek the truth before the can die" and then contrast this with "Ohio" and you can see the rift this was trying to heal.
@bstarzewski What happened is that people gave up. The people who really meant it died, the people who were following them started following whatever they found. Which isn't to say that optimism and desire for change is dead, but it's a hard road, and people won't go down it without having a strong role-model to go ahead of them.
Regardless of that, this is a terrific song and album.
@wonthefu What happened was that the same generation which had never known adversity in the golden years of the 50s and early 60s became selfish and expected never to be asked to do more than take care of themselves. They got old and joined the TEA party and have become what they hated then.
Could never tire of hearing this wonderful composition, it does something for me that music rarely does. I begin to get emotional, start contemplating and worse start dreaming and temporarily leave reality....good feeling.
This makes me think of my grandmother and how crazy our relationship was when I was younger and how we have both learned from eachother over the years! Love you Granny!
@awnok Ha that opinion is laughable, I mean he only played the lead lick to a song that garnered #16th in 1970, popularity doesn't mean he is good although...
this song is the bomb on the film CORAL REEF ADVENTURE by macgililvray freeman if ur a fan of crosby stills and nash that film has alot of their songs on it!
This was my mother's favorite song. She would play it for her dad all of the time when it came out. And it became their song. She played this song for me about a year ago, and it really stuck with me. Not only because it allowed me to share what she shared with her parent, but because it is such a good song. My mom passed away this past January. Even though I'm only 18, I'll always appreciate this song for its values. It's a great song.
I am with Dr Samba,When I say So sorry to hear of Your Dear Mum's passing.
I played guitar, and sang this song at a Family party many Years ago,and My own Dear Sweet Mum,Who I sadly lost Five Years ago, loved it till the Day She died.
So My Friend,Like Yourself,I too will always appreciate this song for the memories alone.
@AlphonsePotter This was also my Momma's favorite song. She just passed away in June. I'm only 19. I saw your comment on here and cried. We are far too young to lose our moms. But we may have lost them, but we gained angels. <3
@IRISHgirlSDCG I am sorry for your loss. It is true, our mothers were taken from us too soon. Much too soon. But we have to keep our chins up, live our lives as successfully as we can, and try our best to make our mothers proud. :)
@AlphonsePotter I'm really sorry for your loss man. But this song will exist forever, and so will forever tie you to your mother and your feelings for her.
Never forget the values she instilled in you, and make sure to spread the love.
@gemdavey Yeah Really! This is a great song. I can't see how anyone does not like it. I listen to a lot of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, and even I like this song. It's a classic!!!
@gemdavey Hey, buddy, this is Cold War music telling children of the baby boomers and their parents to accept each other's choices about the childrens' drafting letters into the military. Someone needs to teach YOU to appreciate these people and this song.
One of the most memorable, uplifting pedal steel guitar performances I know of, as well as one of the most MAINSTREAM and it was performed by none other than JERRY GARCIA, who was more well-known, certainly, for his soaring Alembic six-string picking with "The Dead".
I wish this song was longer :(

This song reminds me of Reseda and raising 4 kids. It made me cry then, and it made me cry now. Great song, many memories. Mama tried.

@AlphonsePotter That's a wonderful story :)
Hope you're doing ok now, I'm 22 and I'm sure it can't be easy losing a parent at such a relatively young age (like myself)
Love :)

Best wishes to You.

You need to" teach" this one person what good music is....

@gemdavey Yeah Really! This is a great song. I can't see how anyone does not like it. I listen to a lot of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, and even I like this song. It's a classic!!!
1962drob 10 months ago
@gemdavey Hey, buddy, this is Cold War music telling children of the baby boomers and their parents to accept each other's choices about the childrens' drafting letters into the military. Someone needs to teach YOU to appreciate these people and this song.

One of the most memorable, uplifting pedal steel guitar performances I know of, as well as one of the most MAINSTREAM and it was performed by none other than JERRY GARCIA, who was more well-known, certainly, for his soaring Alembic six-string picking with "The Dead".

Just purchased the CD 40 years after having owned the cassette. The 'late' cassette having been chewed up by the car's cassette player!
