@rpottol Actually, it wasn't. A lot of Doom was written in platform specific, hand crafted assembly code aimed at the PC platform. According to some reports, the NeXT computer was used for building game levels. According to others, it was only used to write the game manual.
The NEXTcube in my opinion is one of the most unique computers known, and the most advanced at the time. It was even used to create the maps for the hit 1995 shooter, Quake.
